Alex leaned back in his chair and let out a deep sigh. I could sense his unease. He had sighed three times since we left the house this morning. "Are you alright?" I asked, trying to lighten the mood. "Don't be upset, or your good luck will be gone."
He glanced at me sideways, then turned his head to look out the window. Last night, Zachary had taken his spot on the bed, but there was no point in arguing with a child for him.
I saw Alex frown slightly and hurriedly asked, "Are you feeling unwell?"
He turned to me with suspicion in his eyes and pursed his lips. "Are you hoping I'm not feeling well?" he asked, leaning in closer.
I tried to push him away, but before I could, the car's partition suddenly came down. "N-no," I stammered.
Alex's scrutinizing gaze fell on me, and a faint smile tugged at the corner of his lips as if he could sense my nervousness. "What are you afraid of?" he asked, his breath warm and his muscular frame radiating heat, making my heart race violently. It was almost criminal how effortlessly he made me lose my mind.
Before I could muster any strength to push him away, Alex straightened up and asked, "Why did you follow me to the company?"
"Can't I?" I frowned and turned to look at him.
He sighed again, his tone calm but direct. "I'm just worried you might get upset if you come."
I was taken aback. "What, are you hiding someone at the company?"
Maliyah had told me yesterday that although Austin hadn't given her a hard time since joining the branch, he had recently hired Bailee. But I was surprised that a nurse suddenly switched her career. What worried me more was that she might have told Austin about Alex's injury.
"Bailee is at the company," Alex said.
I nodded, my gaze returning to his handsome face. A playful smile crept onto my lips. "Are you worried I'll give her a tough time?"
Alex met my eyes, hesitating for a moment before saying, "She's from the Lambert family."
"So?" I replied nonchalantly. "What do you think she's here for? You or me?"
A flicker of surprise crossed Alex's face, but it was gone in an instant. "Laurel, you..."
"Don't worry, I'll be fine," I said, looking into his eyes, which were filled with concern.
He had always been so proud and arrogant, no matter the situation. But ever since his injury, that pride seemed to have faded.
From Lawrence, I learned that the old doctor believed Alex's leg nerves could improve with treatment.
But Alex had refused to continue it because the clinic was in Wadiff City, and he needed to stay in Nifelheim City. There was still a month left, but I understood his fear. He was scared that the outcome might not be what he hoped for.
"Your leg still needs treatment," I said softly. "Even if there's only a sliver of hope, you should give it a try."
"Do you despise me?" he asked.
I hummed, my voice light but firm. "If you really end up paralyzed, I'll protect you. But as long as there's a chance, I won't let you end like that. After all, I'm used to being lazy." With that, I leaned my head on his shoulder.
Somehow, I had stopped being afraid of him. Whether he was angry or smiling, I could face him without hesitation.
"Get out of the car," Alex's voice brought me back to reality. I blinked, realizing I had dozed off. Last night, Zachary had been kicking the blankets, and I hadn't slept well.
This morning, I rushed out of bed as soon as I heard movement. I guess I had gotten too used to a comfortable life and now even a little exhaustion felt unbearable.
"Didn't you sleep well last night?" Alex asked, already knowing the answer.
I shot him a look, my lips curling into a smirk. Not sleeping well was still better than being so exhausted that I couldn't get out of bed the next day.
As I stepped out of the car, my phone buzzed. Seeing it was Marvin calling, I quickly declined and sent him a text: [Not a good time.]
Less than half a minute later, Marvin replied: [Kailyn had a miscarriage. Might never be able to have children again.]
My hand trembled as I held the phone, my mind going blank. How could Kailyn be infertile?
"What's wrong?" Alex asked, his voice low.
I shook my head, trying to suppress the panic rising in my chest. Now I understood why Kailyn had been so furious. She must have blamed me for her miscarriage. But I hadn't pushed her and it was her own fault. So how could a miscarriage lead to infertility?
Suddenly, I remembered the sterilizing potion Melody had tried to make me drink. Although I wasn't sure what had happened, I was certain that Jayden was behind Kailyn's infertility. But he had gone too far. Melody was the one who had done wrong, yet Kailyn was the one suffering.
But I felt no sympathy for Kailyn. She had driven many people to their deaths, even if she hadn't personally killed them.
I took a deep breath, put my phone back in my bag, and forced a faint smile. Calmly, I followed Alex into the elevator as if nothing had happened.
When we entered the company, all eyes were on me. My presence seemed to surprise everyone. It made sense. Since marrying Alex, I had only been to the company once, and that was when I had publicly confronted the Harvey family's daughter.
Since then, the beautifully dressed young women in the office had been overly respectful, afraid I might cause trouble for them if I was in a bad mood.
When Austin saw me walking in with Alex, he was stunned for a moment before quickly approaching to greet us.
My gaze shifted to Bailee, who stood behind Austin. "I didn't expect to see Miss Foster here," I said casually.
Bailee was wearing a black dress that perfectly accentuated her curves. Who would have thought that beneath her nurse's uniform lay such an alluring figure?
"Mrs. Herrera, it's been a while," Bailee said, lifting her chin slightly. Her eyes held a hint of provocation, a far cry from the cautious demeanor she had shown when we first met.
