"Notify all management. We'll have a meeting this morning," Alex instructed his assistant, Danny, as he sat in his wheelchair, his expression cold and stern.
Austin, standing nearby, furrowed his brow slightly, a flicker of confusion in his eyes. He hesitated for a moment before asking, "Is there something important to announce?"
Alex gave a faint nod, not even looking up.
Austin's face darkened, and a trace of panic flashed in his eyes before he quickly masked it. I was momentarily taken aback. Austin had always been good at hiding his emotions, but that brief moment of unease didn't escape my eyes. I couldn't help but wonder why he was so nervous.
When he had first appeared, his expression had been unnatural. It seemed this meeting wasn't just about internal personnel changes. I had an intuition that there was likely something else being hidden from Alex.
I subtly shifted my gaze to Bailee and smiled warmly. "I'm curious, Miss Foster, what position do you hold here? Could you please get me something to drink?" My tone carried a hint of compliment. "After all, you were once a senior nurse. I never expected to run into you here."
Bailee hadn't been seen since she left the banquet last time. As the dignified daughter of the Lambert family, even if she was illegitimate, why had she been working as a nurse? And why was she here now?
"Bailee is my assistant," Austin interjected, his eyes darting toward Bailee subconsciously. The momentary panic in his gaze never escaped me.
I scoffed in my heart. Their relationship was clearly more than what it appeared to be like. But given Bailee's background, it was unlikely she would be interested in Austin. Obviously, she was here for Alex.
I couldn't decide whether to feel sad or amused. Even in a wheelchair, Alex still had people trying to steal him away from me.
"Miss Foster seems exceptionally capable, able to handle any job with ease," I remarked, my words laced with subtle sarcasm.
As I looked at Bailee, with her flawless makeup and skin, I realized she wasn't the simple woman I had initially thought her to be. She was a wolf in sheep's clothing, and one wrong move could leave me devoured. The Lambert family was indeed not ordinary.
Bailee smiled gracefully, her expression perfectly professional. "I just wanted a change of environment. I'm glad that it seems Mrs. Herrera and I are bound to meet often! Let me get you some water."
Her hypocritical demeanor made me sneer. Glad to meet me? She was just scheming to steal my husband.
I gave her a cool glance and then casually took a seat at Alex's desk, subtly asserting my status.
Soon, Bailee returned with a cup of coffee gracefully. The office was now just the two of us.
"My apologies, Mrs. Herrera, I forgot you're pregnant. How careless of me," she said, her tone apologetic, but her eyes cunning.
"Miss Foster, no wonder you've changed your job. But a little coffee won't hurt me," I replied calmly, picking up the cup and taking a sip. The intense bitter taste spread across my tongue, and I frowned. "It's too bitter. Looks like you're not good at making coffee."
The atmosphere in the office grew tense, but her smile remained unchanged. "Shall I make an order for you? Perhaps you prefer instant coffee. Freshly ground might not suit your taste." Her tone was gentle, but her words were sharp.
"Miss Foster, why are you so familiar with my preferences? You used to take care of my husband, but I didn't realize you were so attentive to my tastes." I raised my voice slightly to ensure it carried beyond the office. My warning was clear.
I took a deep breath, suppressing my anger, and continued, "But you're right. I do prefer instant coffee. The quality of coffee beans varies, but instant coffee offers a more consistent flavor."
Bailee remained unflappable. She stepped closer, her sweet, delicate perfume wafting toward me, making me frown slightly.
"Mrs. Herrera, these coffee beans are of the highest quality. They're Mr. Herrera's favorite," she said, her lips curving into a charming smile, unfazed by my cold demeanor. "Shall I get you some juice instead? It would be more suitable for your condition."
I slowly looked up, meeting her gaze, and leaned back in my chair. "It seems Miss Foster hasn't spent enough time with my husband. Didn't you know he's a germaphobe? He only keeps his favorite items within arm's reach."
With that, I opened the desk drawer and saw a sealed bag of coffee beans.
A crack finally appeared in Bailee's composed facade. "Mrs. Herrera certainly knows Mr. Herrera well, because you have been together for long, right?"
"Not that long," I replied casually.
Bailee's lips curled into a mocking smile. "I thought so. After all, when Mr. Herrera had his accident, he didn't call you first."
I chuckled at her attempt to sow discord. "As long as I'm Mrs. Herrera, that's all that matters. The rest is irrelevant."
"Is that so? I don't think so," Bailee said bluntly.
I smiled faintly, unperturbed. "As long as you don't flaunt yourself in front of me, I don't mind what you're doing. After all, my husband is a germaphobe."
"A germaphobe?" Bailee suddenly laughed coldly. "But I heard that Mrs. Herrera's ex-boyfriend was Austin. Is that true?"
I saw amusement in her eyes. She lowered her voice, trying to irritate me.
I said calmly, "That's true. So your relationship with Austin is really special."
"Mrs. Herrera, you're the real special one," Bailee said with a fake smile, lowering her voice. "You dated Austin but ended up in his uncle's bed. Are you clean?"
"Bailee, if I recall correctly, you're the illegitimate daughter of the Lambert family, aren't you? Didn't they give you anything? Isn't working here a bit beneath you?"
