"Are you kidding me? Mr. Herrera has come back to take charge. This is what they call 'making an example out of someone.'"
"What do you mean?" someone asked in confusion.
"It means now that he's willing to cut his own people, he's not going to go easy on anyone else."
My stomach dropped, and a sense of unease settled over me. The company's been under pressure lately. The industrial park project was on the line, just a month away from being finalized, so now this kind of drastic change could spell disaster.
Finding replacements in a short period of time would be a nightmare, and even if we tried to bring back the people we let go, they would probably be unwilling to come back. After all this, who should pay for the company's losses?
With all these thoughts swirling in my head, I headed back to the office and took out my phone, about to call Marvin when I heard footsteps outside the door.
Alex wheeled in, looking harried. "Laurel, Lawrence will take you home. I won't have time to eat lunch with you today. There's still work to handle."
I nodded and followed Lawrence out. When I found out Marvin was at the Seastar Hotel, I had Lawrence drive me there.
As the car pulled up to the hotel, I took a deep breath and walked in. The moment I stepped into the lobby, I spotted Casey. Her face flickered with surprise when she saw me.
And then I noticed her standing next to Marvin. The two of them together were both good-looking, but the whole scene looked weird.
"Laurel, it's been a while since we met," Casey said, walking over and giving me a light hug. We'd only met a handful of times, but for some reason, it always felt like we'd known each other for years, perhaps because we both had a friend named Angela.
"Casey," I said, smiling at her.
She said, "I know you two have things to discuss, so I'll leave you to it. Let's grab lunch later."
"Okay." I nodded.
After she walked away, I lowered my voice to Marvin. "Casey is really pretty, and I like her personality."
"So next time, I'll ask her if she's into men or women for you," Marvin said, his lips curling into a teasing smirk.
I rolled my eyes at him, not in the mood for his jokes.
Marvin glanced behind me, his brow furrowing slightly, and used a blaming tone. "Alex really doesn't take your safety seriously, letting you run around alone like this. What if something happened?"
I retorted, "If someone were tailing me, do you think I could've come here? Stop minding my schedule and get to the point."
Marvin raised an eyebrow, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Don't make it sound like we're here to do something shady."
With that, he led me to the pre-booked room. I sat down at the computer, cutting straight to the chase in a questioning tone. "Why do you want me to hack into SafeHaven Security? Don't you know this is illegal?"
Marvin's smile vanished. He hesitated for a moment, a mix of pain and determination appeared in his eyes. "The truck driver who killed Angela used to work for SafeHaven Security."
The air in the room seemed to freeze. My eyes widened in shock.
SafeHaven Security was a big name in Nifelheim City, handling everything from escorts to ensuring the security of significant figures of government, corporations, airports, construction sites, schools, and hospitals.
Their employees were top-tier, trained to handle multiple attackers, and the hiring process was brutal. They didn't just want muscle; they wanted experience.
"Are you sure? Do you have proof? If he was a security guard, why did he end up driving trucks?" I was confused.
"He lost a finger in an accident. After that, he left the company and got some compensation, but it wasn't enough to support his family, so he started driving trucks." Marvin explained.
His fists clenched. "I've been investigating this for a long time. There's no ironclad evidence linking the security company to Angela's death, but the clues indicate that the company's got a shady background. Their CEO, Jaxson Davidson, do you know where he's from?"
I didn't answer.
He continued, "He's from Wadiff City."
"So you think the Parks family set this up to take over the Adams family's business, and Angela was implicated?" I asked, rubbing my temples.
Marvin shook his head. "I do suspect the Parks family, but something feels wrong." He let out a sigh and started pacing the room with an agitated expression. After a while, he stopped. "Laurel, I feel like someone's pulling strings, steering all the suspicion toward the Parks family."
"What do you mean?" I looked at him in confusion.
"I just feel like everything is going too smoothly."
"Smoothly? If you hadn't dug into this, Angela's death would've been written off as an accident," I said bitterly. "If Maddox really killed her, I won't let him get away with it. To me, Angela is my family."
"I know, but you can't act recklessly. Right now, you need to earn your father's trust," Marvin said, his tone cautious. "If Maddox really did this, he's not someone to underestimate. If he catches wind of what you're up to, he won't hesitate to take you out."
I nodded and turned to the computer. But after twenty minutes, I still couldn't crack SafeHaven Security's system. "It's not working."
Marvin looked shocked.
"Tried every method I know, but I can't get in. They've got a serious expert," I said, my curiosity piqued. What were they hiding? I had an intuition that there must be a big dirty secret inside this company.
"Is there another way?" Marvin asked, his expression grim. "This company is the only clue I've got."
"With an external interface, I can hack in. But we need someone who won't raise any red flags to enter the company."
"But getting into SafeHaven Security isn't exactly easy." Marvin frowned and let out a frustrated sigh.
