Marvin looking dejected, I reached out and patted his shoulder. "Don't worry, I'll handle this. Once I find something, I'll let you know."
"No, you can't just jump into this. Your current position makes it too risky," Marvin said, his brow furrowed, his deep eyes filled with worry.
I understood his fear.
SafeHaven Security was the only lead we had about Angela's death, and he was afraid I would throw caution to the wind to uncover the truth behind it.
More importantly, if Maddox really was the one behind SafeHaven Security, it would put me in danger. If I ever went back to the Parks family, Maddox would do everything in his power to stop me from investigating this case. If he caught even a whiff of what I was up to, I would become a liability.
Even if I was his daughter, his ruthless nature wouldn't hesitate to eliminate me. After all, for rich people, human life sometimes means nothing more than a number on a bank statement.
"Don't worry, I'll find someone else to look into it." I looked at him.
Marvin paused, his expression darkening as he stared at me. "Who are you going to find? Forget it, just stay out of this. I'll figure something out myself."
I stayed silent for a moment, then nodded. Still, I couldn't help adding, "Don't go doing anything illegal, okay? I'm counting on you to bring the bad guys to justice in your sister's case."
Marvin hummed softly, his head down, and I caught a glimpse of sorrow in his eyes. Even though Angela hadn't been particularly fond of Marvin, her younger brother, she'd always had his back.
Every time he was bullied, she would pretend not to care, only to corner the bullies the next day, her expression dark and her voice menacing. "If I ever catch you messing with Marvin again, don't blame me for being rude, or you'll regret it. The only one who is allowed to bully him is me. Got it?"
After that, no one dared to bully Marvin again.
Even though Angela was the one who did the good deed, the credit somehow always ended up on me. At one point, rumors started spreading at school that I had a crush on a younger guy, and for a while, Marvin would blush every time he saw me.
"By the way, about Kailyn." I looked up at Marvin and fixed my gaze on him.
Just then, his phone rang. He took it out, glanced at the number, and his face immediately showed irritation. After a few curt words, he hung up.
Seeing my curious expression, Marvin sighed, his thick brows furrowing. "My mom's been pushing me to go on blind dates lately."
"Found anyone you like yet?" I teased.
"I'm not planning on getting married." He shook his head slightly.
I blinked with shock, caught off guard. "But why?"
"Laurel, not everyone dreams of a happy family," Marvin said with a faint smile.
But when he smiled like that, it made my heart hurt a little.
At that moment, I thought I could relate to him, but I couldn't agree with his outlook. No matter how messed up your family was, you shouldn't lose hope for a better future.
Maybe he thought that even though I didn't have a father, at least I still had a loving family. But he might have no idea that the mother I had once relied on had almost taken me away from this world. However, I never blamed her because I knew she was sick.
"If Angela were still here, she must want you to be happy," I said quietly. "She was all bark and no bite. She always threatened to cut me off if I kept in touch with you, but then she secretly stalked your social media with an alternate account and even added you."
"I know," Marvin chuckled, pulling a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and putting one between his lips. But just as he reached for his lighter, he paused. "I'll go out for a smoke."
"Go smoke on the balcony. No smoking in the hallway."
"Never mind, I stop." With that, he stuffed the cigarette back and said casually, "There's one more thing I need to tell you. Kailyn is an imposter."
"Imposter? What do you mean?"
"She's not Maddox's biological daughter," Marvin said in an indifferent tone.
I stared at him, stunned. "How is that possible?"
"From what I've gathered, Maddox probably knows," Marvin continued, his expression serious. "The reason your mom left the Parks family back then might not be what we thought. And the signature on the divorce papers wasn't her handwriting."
"Are you saying my mom knew Melody's child wasn't Maddox's, so she left alone without actually divorcing him?"
Marvin nodded, his voice low. "I need to dig deeper into this."
I couldn't believe it. Kailyn, the girl the Parks family had been doting on, was an imposter. And Austin wasn't Kayden's son either. Those two really were a match made in heaven.
I couldn't help but wonder how they would react if they ever found out the truth about each other after getting married. Maybe, as Marvin said, my mom had discovered Melody's secret and that was exactly why she left the Parks family, living in hiding ever since.
What happened back then? Even if I confronted Maddox, he probably wouldn't tell me the truth. And now wasn't the time to alert him.
Marvin advised, "Laurel, you shouldn't go out alone for these days. I'm worried Kailyn might try something."
"Whose child was Kailyn carrying?" I asked.
He let out a dry laugh. "You think I know? If it weren't for my connections at the hospital, I wouldn't even know about this secret. But she really shot herself in the foot, trying to frame you and ending up losing the baby, and possibly her chance to ever have kids."
"Did you find anything from the photo I gave you last time?"
He shook his head, a look of confusion crossing his stern face. "It's strange. I had someone check the surveillance footage. The man in the photo had a ponytail, and his features were pretty distinctive, but he just vanished after that. It's like he appeared out of nowhere and then disappeared like air."
"Send me the photo. I'll check if he's in any of the old pictures I have."
Marvin nodded, his eyes locking onto mine. "Laurel, don't go looking for him on your own, you hear me?"
"No, you can't just jump into this. Your current position makes it too risky," Marvin said, his brow furrowed, his deep eyes filled with worry.
