"Got it," I replied impatiently.
I knew Marvin was worried I would be rash and act on my own. because the enemy was in the shadows, and we were out in the open.
All the incidents seemed so plausible, like genuine accidents. But that was not the case. What I couldn't figure out was, if Maddox really wanted to take over the Adams family's business, why target Angela? He had plenty of other underhanded tactics.
Angela had been planning to meet Isaac that day. I hadn't asked Isaac about her because I didn't want to tip anyone off. After all, Angela's death hadn't been made public yet. But deep down, we all knew that if there was someone really digging into it, the truth would come out sooner or later.
Marvin's phone buzzed several times in a row, and I couldn't help but stare at him. "Your phone's ringing."
He glanced at me, his tone indifferent. "I know."
"Your mom setting you up on another blind date?" I asked, leaning back in my chair with my arms crossed. "You should go. Who knows, you might meet the right one."
Marvin paused, then let out a self-deprecating laugh. "I'm going back to being a cop soon. What kind of rich girl would want to marry a police officer? My mom's basically trying to scam someone into marrying me."
I smirked. "It's not that bad. You're still the young master of the Adams family."
Marvin chuckled. "If it weren't for you being pregnant and Mrs. Adams asking me to help out at Seastar Hotel temporarily, I would never have come here. I can't believe my mom actually thinks I could be at this level."
"What about your job at the police station?"
"I took a leave for a month." Marvin frowned. "Only two weeks left, but I haven't found any useful leads."
He looked defeated. I gently patted his shoulder. "Don't be upset. If a case can't be solved quickly, it usually means there's something big behind it."
"You think this is some kind of detective story?" Marvin scoffed, but then he froze as if struck by something.
I didn't interrupt his train of thought. After a moment, he looked at me, his eyes blazing with excitement. "We've probably been overlooking the most important thing."
I looked at him in confusion.
"If all these things were purely accidents, how many accidents have happened this year? There might be a connection. I need to look into it."
Just as Marvin turned to leave, I grabbed his arm.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
I let go of his arm and looked down. "You can't investigate this directly. If someone catches wind of it, I might see your accidental death on the news tomorrow."
He laughed dismissively. "Then I'd like to see what kind of accident they would cook up for me."
"A cop on leave helps catch a thief and gets stabbed? Or maybe you save a drowning child and end up drowning yourself? Accidents can take many forms, and they all look plausible," I said, locking eyes with him. "I know you're doing this for Angela, but right now, I need your help more."
He met my gaze, a faint smile on his lips. "Don't worry, I'm not brave enough to sacrifice before catching the person who killed my sister. If she found out I left you alone, she would kill me."
I smiled, but a pang of sadness hit me.
Angela had so many unfulfilled wishes and so many things she wanted to do. She used to say that when we got old, we must live together, so we could stay up late, drinking and watching horror movies.
"Aren't you afraid you'll give yourself a heart attack at this age?" Angela would frown at me.
"I'm not scared. I've got you, don't I?" I would laugh and wrap my arm around hers.
But the next second, her scream would startle me. "Angela, you're scarier than the movie!"
She never knew that the days I spent with her were the happiest time of my life. I had friends, family, and laughter. No matter how much bullying or humiliation I had suffered in the past, I could always smile through it. Even in the years after she went abroad, just hearing her voice would lift my spirits.
Hearing her endless complaints, I would always think, how could there be such a fun girl in the world? She had her spoiled moments, but she had a kind heart.
A knock at the door interrupted my thoughts.
Marvin peeked through the peephole and saw Casey standing outside. He opened the door. "Isn't it a bit early for a meal?"
Casey smiled faintly as she looked Marvin up and down. "There's someone at the front desk looking for you."
Marvin's face darkened with displeasure. "Did my mom bring someone here again?"
Casey nodded silently.
Marvin took a deep breath, trying to suppress his anger.
"Hurry up and go down. The girl has come all this way to see you," I said, grinning at him.
Marvin shot me a glare and headed for the elevator.
I really wondered which girl Yvonne had picked as her future daughter-in-law. When I sneaked downstairs with Casey, I was surprised to see a familiar face. "What's she doing here?" I muttered, staring at Abigail Cole, who was standing not far away.
Abigail was the daughter of the Cole family, known in the upper class for being spoiled, arrogant, and picky. She only went for guys with good family backgrounds, good looks, and preferably, future heirs. There was no way someone like Abigail would be interested in Marvin.
"You know Abigail?" Casey asked.
"Who in Nifelheim City doesn't know her?" I replied with a smirk, pulling Casey toward a corner table in the restaurant. "Looks like it's just the two of us today."
But unexpectedly, Yvonne walked over to our table. "Laurel, it's been a while."
"Mrs. Adams," I said, standing up and smiling at her.
Her gaze fell on my stomach, and her smile widened.
I couldn't help but feel a little awkward. Yvonne had always been convinced that Marvin had a crush on me, which was why he had never dated anyone.
After I got married, I figured the happiest people weren't just my mom. Yvonne was probably relieved too. After all, she no longer had to worry about me corrupting her son.
