After finishing his cigarette, Marvin lingered outside for another five minutes to let the smoke dissipate before returning to the car. When I learned that Javier hadn't been seriously hurt and had only been slapped by an older woman, the worry that had been weighing on me eased.
A wave of fatigue hit me, and my eyelids grew heavy. Before I knew it, I drifted off to sleep.
I jolted awake when the car came to a stop. Outside the window, I could see the Midtown Police Station.
Marvin quickly led me in, heading straight inside. Before long, he came back out with Javier. Javier was hanging his head, his face full of frustration and anger.
"What exactly happened?" I stepped forward, asking urgently.
Javier gritted his teeth, his eyes burning with anger. "I was on the bus, and this old woman sat beside her grandson. I was playing a game and not paying attention to my surroundings.
"Then, out of nowhere, she starts with her sarcastic remarks, saying that young people always play games, don't respect older people, or care for children. I was going to ignore her, but she kept going, and my temper flared up. So, I decided not to give up my seat."
Javier always gave up his seat for older people, so it was surprising that something like this happened just once when he didn't. "Alright, calm down. It's not a big deal. We don't need to stoop to their level," I said gently, patting Javier on the arm.
Javier paused for a moment, taking a deep breath before continuing. "I thought the same at first, but then her grandson went too far. He rushed up and swatted my phone out of my hand, and it hit the ground. I was so angry that I shouted at him, and I think he got scared because he immediately started crying.
"And she immediately slapped me. She probably would've kept going if it hadn't been for someone pulling her away. After the slap, she insisted that I had scared her grandson and demanded that I apologize and compensate.
I just muttered, 'What a shameless person,' and she completely lost it. She grabbed my bag and threw herself on the ground, acting like I had pushed her. Fortunately, the young girl sitting in the front helped and called the police."
As I got closer, I saw the deep, glaring red scratches on Javier's face and wrists. They were clearly from the woman's sharp nails, intentionally leaving marks. My fists clenched in anger, and my chest rose and fell with each heavy breath. "This is outrageous!" I exclaimed.
We followed the officer into the mediation room. The officer looked exhausted as he formally gave a settlement agreement and said, "You're both young, and the elderly woman is much older. Please show some understanding. Let's settle this small matter. Just sign here, and it'll be over."
I nodded, feeling the anger simmering inside me. But I knew that, to others, the grandmother and her grandson were the more vulnerable ones, so people would naturally lean in their favor. Besides, expecting someone who had lived their whole life to change their ways was a pipe dream.
But immoral people only harm her grandson. At such a young age, he was arrogant and didn't know right from wrong. He would have plenty of hardship ahead of him.
Before we could say anything, the older woman jumped to her feet, hands on her hips, her wrinkles deepening with anger. "What, just because you have connections, you think you can get away with this? No way! I'm telling you, if you don't apologize and pay up, you're not going anywhere.
"When my family gets here, you'll regret it. Anyone who dares to bully my precious grandson will pay the price!"
As our tension escalated, Damian slowly walked down the stairs from the second floor. Seeing the commotion, he frowned slightly and walked over to us. I couldn't help but feel stunned—how did he end up here?
At that moment, the boy was waving a toy gun around, making "bang, bang" sounds. Suddenly, as if he'd found a new target, he ran up to me and swung the gun right at my head. I winced in pain, frowning. Just as Javier stepped forward to intervene, Damian beat him to it.
A faint smile played on his handsome face as he bent down to look at the boy. "Hey boy, you're great, aren't you? You've got some guts!" As soon as he said that, everyone around us froze, exchanging surprised glances.
The older woman, thinking someone had her back, instantly smiled. She squatted down and patted the boy's shoulder. "My precious is just brave. He can't stand seeing anyone bully his grandma."
Damian's lips curled into a subtle, knowing smile as he slowly leaned close to the boy's ear, whispering.
The boy's eyes widened initially, then a gleam of delight appeared as if he had just received a fascinating command. Without hesitation, he turned around and ran to a nearby table, moving quickly. A moment later, he returned to his grandma.
Just as she proudly praised the boy, he gripped the ashtray and swung it hard onto her head. There was a muffled thud, and everyone around us froze in shock. Her eyes went wide, and before she could even scream, she was knocked to the ground, blood instantly pouring from the gash on her forehead.
The boy glared at Damian as if he had just accomplished something grand. His small face was tense, a sinister expression replacing his earlier joy. With a menacing tone, he spat, "Who said I wouldn't dare hit her? There's no one I'm afraid to hit."
The boy's childish voice, at that moment, sounded chilling. Suddenly, the entire scene erupted into chaos. The officers were caught off guard; no one had expected it. They scrambled over to check on the older woman, shouting for an ambulance while desperately pressing a towel to her wound to stop the bleeding.
The family arrived in a rush, and upon seeing the scene before them, they froze for a moment. Then, they let out a heart-wrenching cry and charged toward Javier, trying to grab him. Thankfully, the officer acted quickly, intercepting the muscular man before he could be reached.
When it was revealed that the boy had used the ashtray to strike the older woman, his father slapped him. Despite being reasonably tall, the boy stumbled back a couple of steps, clearly caught off guard by the sudden blow.
The boy stared in disbelief at his frantic father, anger flaring in his eyes as he shouted, "How dare you hit me?"
"You ungrateful brat! You laid a hand on your grandmother! Just wait, I'll teach you a lesson you won't forget!"
At that moment, the woman standing behind the man hurried over to the crying boy, sobbing loudly. "Why are you yelling at him and hitting him? He's only nine years old, just a child! What does he know?" she exclaimed.
"Exactly. Don't be so quick to lash out. The child is still young; he needs to be taught slowly," Damian said, his brow furrowed. "But for now, we should get her to the hospital as quickly as possible!"
