Honestly, hearing what Damian said initially made me find it hard to believe. But then again, it wasn't all that difficult to understand.
Perhaps at the time, Julissa had intended to meet Damian's mother, her future sister-in-law, Micah Lambert. However, she unknowingly crossed paths with Damian's father. Given Damian's looks, one could imagine his father must have been handsome in his younger years.
Moreover, with wealth and good looks, what young girl wouldn't be attracted to him? Perhaps, to help her brother, she used all her wits, hoping to change the fate of the three of them.
In the end, she became trapped in her scheme. Despite knowing that Keith Lambert had married Micah, she still chose to be his mistress, living on the side. Even more unbelievable was that Micah didn't blame Julissa after discovering the truth.
Instead, she treated Julissa's daughter, Bailee, as her own. If it hadn't been for the Lambert family's reluctance to acknowledge Julissa's identity, it's possible that Micah would have already brought the two of them into the Lambert family.
In my opinion, Micah had never truly loved Keith Lambert. Perhaps that was why she had been able to accept Julissa's existence. She possibly felt guilty toward Keith, unable to love him fully, and had chosen to embrace an open marriage.
She could fully accept her husband's relationships with others while still maintaining their marriage. This arrangement might be commonplace among younger generations, but it was undoubtedly rare among the older generation.
"Has Mr. Foster gotten married?" Javier couldn't help but ask out of curiosity.
"He did." Damian raised an eyebrow in response, then sighed dramatically. "And he's got a happy family, with a son and a daughter. Honestly, I don't understand what my mom was thinking. Maybe her mindset is even more progressive than mine."
Marvin, however, paid no attention to the Lambert family's affairs. With a cold expression, he stared at Damian and asked directly, "So, do you know that Bailee went to the Herrera Group to work as Austin's secretary?"
Damian shook his head, raising his hand to pinch the bridge of his nose. He gave me a meaningful glance and said, "I thought she went to work as Alex's secretary. Looks like she really can't stay out of trouble. All she ever does is play her little tricks."
"Little tricks?" Marvin scoffed. "She's the one who went to a hotel with Alex. As her older brother, shouldn't you be keeping an eye on her?"
I didn't expect Marvin to say he had seen Bailee and Alex at the hotel today. Meanwhile, sitting beside me, Javier's face instantly turned red with anger.
"Did you see Alex and Bailee enter the hotel?" he asked.
Looking at Marvin sideways, I quickly responded, "Maybe I saw it wrong."
"Alex should be in a wheelchair now. How could you have mistaken that?" Damian said with a playful smile. "My sister took after her mother—when she sets her sights on something, she'll do anything to get it."
I couldn't help but pause momentarily, feeling unease in my chest as I thought about Bailee's determined expression. Indeed, Bailee was different from the other young ladies around Alex. She knew how to hide her sharp edges and, more importantly, she understood how to serve and please others.
Bailee was incredibly skilled at manipulating people's emotions. It didn't take long after she joined the Herrera Group for me to hear from Maliyah that her colleagues already admired her. Several suitors didn't take offense despite being rejected by her. Instead, they believed it was because they weren't good enough for her.
As she claimed, with Bailee's capabilities, she and Alex might have already gotten together. However, she always listened to Alex's instructions. Even when he told her to leave, she obediently complied. After all, most men seemed to prefer docile women who followed their lead.
When Alex initially agreed to marry me, I was always obedient and sensible, disregarding many things. Perhaps after marriage, he realized that the wife he had married wasn't the same as before—someone who let others manipulate her. Instead, she had become someone who could be ruthless when needed.
If it weren't for the child I was carrying, if I hadn't insisted on marrying him in front of the Herrera family, he might have already chosen to divorce me. But right now, perhaps he had agreed to Bailee's request, so they went to the hotel together.
I didn't want to continue overthinking, so I forced myself to appear calm and composed as I looked at Damian. "Then I'll take a page from your mother's book and accept it calmly. After all, Alex once said that he would never divorce me."
"If you could truly accept it so calmly, it would only mean one thing—you don't love him," Damian said, his gaze fixed on me with a hint of amusement. A bright smile tugged at his lips. "Since you don't love him, why bother torturing yourself? After the divorce, marry me."
Hearing this, Marvin slammed his cup onto the table, his eyes narrowing with cold intensity as he fixed his gaze on Damian. However, Damian seemed entirely unfazed and in an excellent mood and gave Marvin a fleeting glance. "You don't want to marry Laurel, do you?" he asked, his tone casual.
I cleared my throat silently. "Mr. Lambert, I don't think we're particularly close." Honestly, my first impression of Damian was that of a wealthy heir who liked to flirt with beautiful women. He seemed like a playboy.
However, I realized he wasn't all bad after getting to know him better. He had helped me twice and even assisted in searching for Rosemary when she went missing. Still, he couldn't seem to shake off his playboy nature.
"But I remember when you married Alex, you two didn't seem very close either," he said.
I was taken aback. Had Alex shared the details of our relationship with Damian? "I didn't expect Mr. Lambert to be interested in a married woman," I said, slightly raising my chin as I looked at him.
There was no trace of anger on his refined face. His deep eyes locked onto mine with intensity. "I didn't expect you to notice such a small flaw," he said.
"I only realized it's not that I don't like women, but I've never found the right one. Unfortunately, when I finally did, she became someone else's wife. But I don't mind at all."
As soon as the words left his mouth, Marvin chuckled. His deep, brooding gaze fixed on Damian, and he spoke slowly, each word dripping with sarcasm. "You two are truly siblings—equally shameless. Why don't you ask Alex if he will give up?"
The room, half-opened as it was, fell into a sudden, eerie silence. As I saw Damian's expression shift dramatically, my heart skipped a beat. Damian was the eldest son of the Lambert family—who would dare provoke him so casually, let alone speak to him in such a disrespectful manner?
