Just as I cleared my throat and was about to speak, I saw Damian curl his lips into a mocking smile. "You're right," he said. "Since he's already found someone new, why should he still hold on to his previous love?"
Previous love? I sneered. Unfortunately, I couldn't even be considered his previous love. Alex only married me because, at the time, he needed a wife to help him out of his predicament. Even our first time together had happened because he'd been drugged.
Honestly, sometimes I felt like I had been living in a dream. But like all dreams, it would eventually come to an end.
"You..." Damian's words clearly infuriated Marvin. I discreetly nudged Javier's arm, hoping to calm the situation down.
He quickly stood up. "Marvin, do you have a cigarette? Let's step outside for a moment. I have something I need to ask you."
After seeing Marvin being pulled away by Javier, Damian sipped his coffee and asked, "What do you want to ask me?"
I looked at him, my voice calm but with a hint of curiosity. "Bailee's goal in getting close to Alex isn't just to ruin our marriage, is it?"
"Do you think I arranged this?" Damian raised an eyebrow, offering a bright smile. He was undeniably handsome, but something about his smile exuded a terrifying aura. When he wasn't smiling, the intensity of his presence was even more unsettling.
It made me think of Alex. The two of them were probably cut from the same cloth. The only difference was that Damian talked too much!
I sighed. "Mr. Lambert, it seems you casually appeared at the police station, but you were probably waiting for me to arrive. And you don't want Alex and Bailee to be together.
"Or rather, you know that Bailee's intentions are far from pure. If a woman like her truly cared for Alex, would she wait until he's married and has children to show up?"
"Laurel, I think I finally understand why Alex married you. It's because you're so smart. But sometimes, being too clever isn't always a good thing," Damian said, his gaze lifting as he ran a finger along the rim of his cup.
"I enjoy fishing. You see, you can catch a big fish with the right bait. I had to use the best bait; otherwise, I wouldn't have caught the big one." He stood up, glancing at the time. "I have things to take care of. If I stay any longer, Marvin might think he needs to throw hands with me to feel better. Let's meet again next time."
"Alright," I nodded. Watching Damian leave, I furrowed my brows slightly, reflecting on the words he had just said. I let out a long sigh.
Someone who could make the heir of the Lambert family feel fear—what kind of person must they be? It seemed like the dynamics in Nifelheim City were about to change.
Ten minutes later, Javier and Marvin returned to the private room. When they saw that Damian was no longer there, they paused in surprise. "He had something on and left," I said.
We spent a full two hours eating and didn't make it back to Honeydew Estate until seven. Marvin dropped us off at the entrance before leaving without another word.
"Remember, don't let anything slip later. It's just us having a meal," I said.
Javier frowned. "But I've already eaten so much, I can't eat anymore."
I let out a wry smile. "Who told you to eat so much?"
"Laurel, 600 dollars per person? What a joke. We should at least make it worth the price. But that restaurant only lets members in, and you need a reservation.
Even though Damian is annoying, he's still rich, living life however he wants," Javier said, suddenly looking at me, his tone slightly cold. "Do you think Alex cheated for sure?"
"I don't know," I replied honestly.
"Don't you plan to ask?" Javier said. "If you're not happy, just leave him!"
I smiled and patted Javier on the shoulder. "Shouldn't you be advising me not to get a divorce? After all, being a single mother isn't easy."
"You don't need to worry; I'll care for you all. We're currently developing a game, and there are already people willing to make an offer to acquire it. However, we want to improve the software more before we go for negotiations," he said.
"Find a lawyer you trust for anything that requires signing a contract." Usually, I wouldn't be this cautious, but I feared Melody might act against the people around me to avenge Kailyn.
"Don't worry. I'll be careful," Javier said. "Am I cursed this year? It feels like I've been unlucky lately, and it's all been related to older people. I think I'll keep my distance from them from now on," he complained.
I couldn't help but laugh. "How can you be so superstitious at such a young age?"
"I can't help it. Too many things have happened recently," Javier said, his tone tinged with a hint of sadness.
As I was about to enter the elevator with Javier, I saw a familiar figure walking in through the door. When I noticed Abigail entering, Javier instinctively stepped before me, shielding me with his body.
"Laurel Parks, can we talk?" Abigail tilted her head, smiling warmly at me.
"We don't have anything to talk about," I replied directly, refusing her offer. I couldn't help but feel confused. Wasn't the rule that only people with properties in Honeydew Estate could enter?
So, did Abigail buy a property here? I had heard that the houses were complex to come by. It seemed I would have to consider moving elsewhere to avoid people just showing up to find me whenever they pleased.
"Don't you want to know why I'm looking for you?" she asked.
"I don't," I replied firmly.
Abigail sneered, walking calmly toward me. She murmured, "Are you planning to watch Marvin die?" The moment her words fell, I froze, my body stiffening in shock.
I turned to look at Javier behind me. "You go ahead, I'll be back in a little while," I said. Javier shook his head, a worried expression crossing his face.
"Are you worried that I'll take her life?" Abigail glanced at the camera above and lazily said, "I'm not that foolish." I gave Javier another look, and he helplessly turned and walked to the elevator.
"What do you want to say?" I looked at Abigail, furrowing my brows slightly.
Abigail spoke. "Queenie's father is dead. He committed suicide."
"Is that so?" I felt a sudden shock in my heart, but I didn't show much emotion on my face.
Although I had heard that the Brown family had gone bankrupt, I hadn't expected that Queenie's father would end his life in such a way. "Do you know who is responsible for his death?" Abigail asked.
"If you want to discuss this with me, I don't think it's necessary to waste time here," I said as I turned to leave.
Behind me, I heard Abigail's voice, "Don't you want to know which company will be the next to go bankrupt?"
I suddenly stopped in my tracks and turned to look at Abigail. "Are you talking about the Adams family?" In truth, I wasn't worried about the Adams Group. We had already signed contracts with the Herrera Group and the Parks family, so I wasn't concerned about that.
"I know you think the Adams Group is safe with its backers," Abigail said, stepping closer to me and lowering her voice. "But what if Marvin dies? The Adams family would be left without heirs."
