"Are you saying that Isaac, the heir of the Parks family, is any less than Marvin?" I lifted my chin slightly, my gaze fixed on Abigail, who looked utterly stunned.
Abigail looked flustered, waving her hands in a panic as a faint blush crept up her cheeks. "That's not what I meant. I don't think your brother would even consider me." She hesitated briefly before cautiously adding, "Are you saying you can make this happen?"
"Of course not," I replied.
Abigail's face fell instantly, disappointment written all over her expression. She couldn't help but complain, "Then why did you even bring it up?"
"But isn't Marvin unwilling to marry you as well? Since that's the case, convincing Isaac might be possible—why not try it? Besides, the Parks family is far more powerful than the Adams family."
Abigail bit her lower lip, her brows knitting together as hesitation filled her eyes. She looked like she wanted to say something but held back.
I didn't exactly dislike her, but I couldn't say I liked her either. However, at least Abigail wasn't as deceitful and ruthless as Thelma.
Abigail was merely a headstrong and spoiled heiress, nothing more. Thelma, however, had masked her true nature behind a gentle and innocent facade, concealing a far more calculating and deceptive side.
If Thelma married into the Parks family, it could cause me much trouble. More importantly, Jayden would never allow her to marry Isaac. Given his personality, it was likely that something disruptive would happen.
It would be better to take the opportunity and do her a favor. If she could get Isaac to marry her, it would work out well for both of us.
Seeing Abigail hesitate, I gently encouraged her, "Aren't you close with Kailyn? The Parks family is pushing Isaac to settle down soon. If she helps you, this might work out."
"Really?" A look of joy spread across Abigail's face.
I nodded. "Of course it's true. The Parks family will be moving to Nifelheim City in a few days and holding a banquet. Make sure to seize the opportunity when it comes."
"Alright, I understand," Abigail replied, looking up at me. The anxiety on her face seemed to lessen a little.
"Just don't mention me in front of Kailyn," I said, smiling. "She doesn't exactly like me, the sister who suddenly took her place."
Abigail paused momentarily, surprised that I would openly mention the conflict between Kailyn and me in front of her. She nodded gently, and as I stepped into the elevator, I heard her voice behind me, "Thank you."
As the elevator doors closed, I couldn't help but sneer. To Abigail, marrying into the Parks family likely seemed like the perfect opportunity. After all, tying the knot with Isaac was a dream for many in high society.
Despite the constant rumors about his relationships, Isaac had never publicly acknowledged them. In the eyes of the public, he was a man who seemed to outshine most other heirs in terms of both looks and family legacy.
Unfortunately, any woman who had ever shown interest in him had been swiftly rejected. Because of this, no one dared to pursue their ideal man openly anymore.
Outsiders didn't know that Isaac held no authority within the Parks family. After all, he wasn't the son of Melody, and it seemed that Maddox didn't have much affection for him, either. It would likely be far from easy for Abigail to win over Melody's favor in the future.
Once I entered the elevator, I messaged Javier, letting him know I was too exhausted to continue and would return to my room to rest.
The dinner that evening had been a bit too filling, and after a long day, I felt pretty fatigued. The room was quiet as I pushed the door open, but the living room light was on.
"You're back?" Alex was sitting on the sofa, his expression cold as he sized me up. That was when I noticed he was wearing black silk pajamas.
Was it really that late already? Had he taken a shower to wash off someone else's perfume? I strolled towards him, my gaze fixed on his handsome face. I spoke absentmindedly, "Time flies. Before you know it, it's already dark. Did you get back from the office?"
"Yeah," Alex replied softly.
I smiled. Marvin had kept asking me why I hadn't pressed further. But a lie was a lie—what reason was there to seek? How could I have been confident that the reason wasn't just another lie? I had no interest in digging deeper. As long as Alex had spoken the words of divorce, I wouldn't have hesitated for a second.
Feelings were inherently uncertain. One moment, you could be deeply in love; the next, circumstances might have pulled two people apart. True love might have existed, but it was an illusion, a fleeting fantasy. The idea of eternal love, of unwavering devotion until the end, was nothing but a dream.
When Alex lied to me, I had already decided to let go. To trust someone unconditionally, only to be met with betrayal—no matter how many reasons or excuses the other person had, I didn't want to know, nor was I interested in knowing.
I could still live a life without relationships. The things I held close to my heart were too heavy, making it impossible to move forward.
The atmosphere around us felt heavy, and Alex's expression was far from pleasant.
"Where are Zachary and Sophina?" I asked.
"Sophina took him downstairs to sleep," Alex said slowly.
I rubbed my forehead and said flatly, "I'm returning to my room. I'm a bit tired."
"You—" After a long pause, Alex finally spoke, asking, "Have you had dinner?"
I paused for a moment and nodded. Seeing Alex hesitating to speak, I couldn't help but sneer inwardly. Was he feeling guilty? "I've already eaten with Javier."
I looked at Alex, and my gaze met his beautiful eyes. A faint fragrance of fresh soap lingering around him gradually calmed my mind.
But at that moment, my phone suddenly vibrated. I received a photo. It showed a woman lying in a man's arms, completely naked. The woman's body was pressed closely against the man's.
Although the man's face was not visible, the ring on his hand pierced my eyes. When I saw Alex sitting on the sofa, cold and distant, my whole body froze in place.
I thought I could look the other way and ignore it, but my mind was blank, and waves of pain surged in my chest. Even breathing seemed to carry a tinge of hurt.
"You must be tired after being out all day. Rest early," Alex said slowly.
I took a deep breath, forcing a smile as I nodded. It felt like I used all my strength to walk back to my room step by step. As I closed the door, my body couldn't stop trembling.
