The morning sunlight came through the gap in the curtains and hit my face, which felt a bit sharp. I slowly opened my eyes and felt that my eyes were dry and red, and my head was heavy. I stayed up until 2 a.m. last night, thinking I would sleep until noon, but I woke up before 7 a.m..
I rubbed my eyes and sighed softly, carefully getting out of bed. I didn't even know why I felt so guilty, especially since I wasn't the one who did something wrong. The room was quiet, with only the sound of my soft footsteps.
I walked to the door, and after hearing it close, I felt relief. Then, I turned and headed toward the bathroom. I looked at myself in the mirror. My face was pale, with bloodshot eyes, and I looked completely drained.
I turned on the tap and let the warm stream wash over my body, hoping it would ease the fatigue and calm my restless mind. After the bath, I put on a face mask and tried to clear my mind for a few minutes.
Once I finished getting ready, I looked at my refreshed reflection in the mirror and gave a self-deprecating smile. Stepping out of the room, I noticed that Alex wasn't around, and I quietly sighed in relief.
In the living room, Dorothy saw me and immediately greeted me with a warm smile. She quickly walked to the dining table and brought the breakfast that had already been prepared. I sat at the table and ate mechanically, but my mind kept reverting to last night's events.
Just then, my phone rang. It was Marvin calling. I quickly answered. "The identity of the deceased has been confirmed," Marvin said, his tone serious.
"Where are you? Let's meet in person to discuss," I suggested.
"I'll pick you up in twenty minutes," he replied briefly.
"Alright." After hanging up the phone, I quickly finished the juice and returned to my room to change into a new outfit.
When I came out again, Dorothy looked at me in surprise. "Mrs. Herrera, are you going out?" she asked, her eyes filled with a hint of confusion.
I nodded in response.
Dorothy hesitated momentarily before speaking, "Mr. Herrera asked you to stay home."
I replied coldly, "I'm not a pet in its cage." With that, I grabbed my bag and walked out without looking back.
When I stepped out of the house, the hallway was eerily quiet. I furrowed my brows, feeling a bit restless. As I reached the elevator, I saw Drew pulling Zachary out.
"Laurel," Zachary called out as soon as he saw me. His eyes lit up, and he immediately ran toward me.
My gloomy mood seemed to lift in that instant. "Are you going out again? When will you have time to spend with me?" Zachary's face was filled with grievance as he clung tightly to the corner of my clothes.
I gently patted his head and said softly, "How about I spend time with you tomorrow?"
"Will you spend the whole day with me?" Zachary blinked, looking at me with hopeful anticipation, his gaze sparkling.
Suddenly, a pang of guilt struck me. Since returning to Nifelheim City, Susan and Sophina had taken care of Zachary. He had been stuck in the neighborhood every day without going anywhere.
I smiled and said, "Tomorrow, I'll take you out and spend the whole day with you. Is that okay?"
Upon hearing this, Zachary's face immediately lit up with joy, and he nodded repeatedly. "Yes, yes!" He was overjoyed and excited.
I saw the message from Marvin and quickly said goodbye to Zachary before hurrying downstairs.
After getting into the car, Marvin looked at me and casually asked, "Did you not sleep well last night? Did you argue?" His eyes showed a hint of concern.
"No," I replied with a side glance at him, brushing it off. "I overate last night and didn't sleep well." After that, I closed my eyes, not wanting to say anything more, just hoping to catch up on some sleep.
The ride was quiet, with only the faint sound of wind and the car moving. When I woke up, I realized the car had stopped in front of the Seastar Hotel. I couldn't believe I had slept for an hour.
"Why didn't you wake me up?" I murmured, frowning slightly. Marvin remained silent. He just looked at me, his eyes filled with a gentle smile.
For a moment, I couldn't help but think that if someone could marry him, they might genuinely be happy for the rest of their life. After all, someone like Marvin would never cheat, but the most likely outcome for his wife would be to become a widow.
I shook my head, trying to push away those strange thoughts, and followed Marvin out of the car. He led me into his room. The room decoration was simple, with sunlight streaming through the window, casting a bright patch of light on the floor.
He walked to the window, hesitated momentarily, then turned to face me, his expression unusually hesitant—which was not typical of him. "Just say it if you have something to say," I said, furrowing my brows as I looked at him.
"It seems there's nothing I can hide from you," Marvin sighed lightly, then spoke in a low voice. "Yesterday, Alex and Bailee were in the room for four hours. They only left together at five in the afternoon." He stared at me intently, watching for my reaction.
"Aren't you supposed to be telling me about the deceased?" I said, still keeping my expression neutral. However, deep down, I couldn't help but feel a ripple of emotion.
Marvin furrowed his brows with confusion. "Did Alex come clean to you? Or did Bailee send you the photo?"
I took off my jacket as I spoke. "Bailee sent me the photo."
"What?" Marvin couldn't help but curse, his gaze turning fierce. He looked at me with disbelief and confusion. "Are you planning just to ignore it? Pretend you don't know?" He clenched his fists, his body slightly trembling, his voice hinting anger.
I smiled faintly, trying to keep my voice calm. "No rush. Do you have a private investigator you could recommend?"
"Are you thinking of getting a divorce?" Marvin stared at me in disbelief, as if I had just said something earth-shattering.
I didn't answer his question. Instead, I walked to the window and looked out at the street. The sun shone brightly, and people walked by, creating a lively scene. But I felt heavy inside.
"It's not the right time yet. If Alex asks for a divorce, I'll agree," I said, pulling the corner of my lips into a self-deprecating smile. "Men are like that; it's normal for them to get tired of the old and seek something new."
"Laurel, I thought you would return to the person you used to be after you left Austin. I didn't expect you to be able to endure this now," Marvin said.
I looked at Marvin, who seemed even angrier than me, and couldn't help but chuckle. I then asked in a calm voice, "So, what do you think I should do?"
