Marvin stared at me with frustration, but deep down, I knew it was because he cared about me. From childhood, his relationship with Yvonne had always been strained. It was because he had known from a young age that his mother was the third party who had ruined someone else's marriage.
When others criticized or bullied him, he never approached his teachers or mother for support. He believed that his mother had already made a mistake by being the third party who destroyed someone else's family, and because of that, he never asked Michael to stand by him.
Every time Michael appeared, he felt disgusted. At the same time, he hated seeing Yvonne constantly crying and acting pitiful.
He would always sneer with disdain and mock, "The legitimate wife doesn't cry, throw a tantrum, or threaten with suicide. If you didn't know any better, you'd think my mom was the legitimate wife."
Sometimes, being too righteous wasn't always a good thing. That was why, when Marvin was young, he often got beaten by Yvonne. After all, who would side with the outsiders?
Marvin had never felt sympathy for Yvonne. Even to this day, he believed that any mistake she made was her responsibility to bear.
"My mother had plenty of chances to end it for good but refused to see reason." I recelled.
He despised women who became mistresses and despised Yvonne just as much. The guilt weighed on him, making it impossible to hold his head high. Every day, he lived in constant fear that someone would uncover his true identity, bringing him even more humiliation, scorn, and violence.
Yvonne always saw herself as pitiful, trapped in a love she could never truly have. Yet, she never honestly considered her child. Or perhaps she did—but only in the sense that she was determined to take another woman's husband for herself, to claim another child's father as the one responsible for her son.
Unfortunately, she had chosen the wrong man. Michael had always been cowardly and weak. Even after his divorce, he never openly married Yvonne. Simply put, he had never intended to take responsibility.
Who was to say another illegitimate child wouldn't surface later, forcing him into yet another marriage out of obligation? Some habits had never changed.
"Either get a divorce or lay everything out in the open. You can't just spend your whole life swallowing your pride, can you?" Marvin snarled. "If you won't think about yourself, at least think about the child you're carrying. Or are you planning to find them a little brother or sister the same way?"
I slowly lifted my head and looked at Marvin, speaking softly, "Don't worry, it won't be long."
"What do you mean?" he asked.
I calmly sat back on the sofa and said gently, "It's not the right time for a divorce yet. Even if I wanted to divorce now, Alex would disagree."
Marvin took a deep breath, steadying his emotions. Without looking away, he walked over to my side and whispered, "Then why do you need a private investigator? To catch him cheating?"
"To monitor Isaac."
Marvin twitched his mouth in disbelief. "Wait, what? Why are you monitoring your brother? That's too risky—what if you alert him?"
"So, I need you to introduce me to a reliable one." I thought briefly, then spoke slowly, "Before Angela's death, she had planned to meet with him. But after I returned to the Parks family, Isaac never mentioned it, not even mentioning her."
"Do you suspect that my sister's death is connected to Isaac? Maybe he did try calling her, but she didn't answer, so he just moved on?" Marvin explained. "Besides, when Isaac reached out to my sister, it was for work-related matters."
Marvin paused for a moment. "But if you still want to investigate him, I'll give you a number in a bit. You can contact him then. Asher Yeats used to be a police officer, but he resigned later."
I nodded, curious about why someone who had managed to secure a stable career would suddenly quit. Just then, Marvin's phone rang. He took it out of his jacket pocket, glanced at the number, and immediately pressed the answer button.
"Alright, I'll head over in a bit," Marvin said, hanging up the phone solemnly.
"What happened?" I asked.
Marvin's expression darkened slightly. "The victim died from poisoning."
"Poisoned?" I froze for a moment, a heavy feeling settling in my chest as my heart began to race. If the victim had ingested poison, it confirmed my earlier suspicion—the murderer had to have been someone familiar. That was why the victim had taken the poison without any defense, trusting the killer who had prepared it in advance.
Marvin took a deep breath, grabbed the car keys, and spoke calmly, "Come with me to the Nifelheim City funeral parlor. The family has been found."
"He's a Nifelheim?"
Marvin replied coolly, "You'll know when we get there."
Half an hour later, we arrived at the Nifelheim City funeral parlor. Before we even reached the lobby, we could already hear voices arguing from inside.
Marvin suddenly stopped, just about to speak, but I didn't hesitate and walked inside. I immediately spotted the young officer I had seen last time, now in plain clothes, trying to break up the fight. At that moment, two groups shouted insults at each other, pulling and pushing, with the words flying as harshly as they could.
"I've raised the child myself. From now on, the child will stay with me. You have no right to fight with me!" One woman in her fifties spoke up.
"Stop talking nonsense! Everyone knows you've been living carefree. Your son isn't even buried yet, and here you are trying to take my granddaughter. Are you afraid no one will take care of you? Bennie is my biological granddaughter, and you old hag can't have her!"
"Stop talking nonsense! I think it's your luck that's so good. You killed my son, and now you want to harm my granddaughter!"
"You old hag! When my daughter gave birth, you knew it was a girl. You took one look and walked away. Now you're calling her your granddaughter? How much money have you spent on her?
"You even encouraged your son to take the pocket money! If it weren't for my husband and me, would that child have grown up this big? Now you're just after the property in her name, right?"
As the words fell, the two sides started to fight. The groups behind them began yanking hair and scratching faces, shouting insults while throwing punches. The young officer was directly pushed out of the scene, his face still stinging from a slap, turning red from the impact.
Marvin quickly approached him, grabbing him and pulling him back. "You're no match for them. I've already called the police."
The officer paused momentarily, then muttered, "Aren't we the police?"
"Are you wearing a uniform? Are you their match?" Mavin's words left him speechless.
"What's going on here?" Marvin added.
"The man's mother and relatives came to take the child. The couple was in the midst of a divorce, and unexpectedly, the man died."
