The sound of arguing echoed in the air. Just then, a woman in her thirties slowly emerged from behind the morgue's tightly shut door, holding a five-year-old girl tightly in her arms.
The woman's frame was thin, her face paled, and her steps unsteady. She wore simple black clothing, her hair falling in disarray around her cheeks. Her eyes were hollow and filled with despair, while her lips, devoid of color, trembled slightly.
The little girl wore a floral dress. Her eyes were red and swollen, filled with fear and unease. She clung tightly to her mother's neck, her tiny body curled into the crook of her neck, looking half-asleep. The once noisy hall fell into a deathly silence in an instant. All eyes turned sharply toward the mother and daughter.
"Give me the child!" A sharp shout shattered the brief silence. The man's mother, dressed in flamboyant clothing, lunged toward the little girl in the woman's arms.
Instinctively, the woman took a step back, but her already frail body couldn't withstand the force of the attack. She stumbled and fell heavily to the ground, yet her arms remained tightly wrapped around the little girl.
"You wicked woman! You couldn't stand to see your son and daughter-in-law living well. You've been sowing discord between them every few days, and now that your son is dead, it's because you drove him to it!"
The woman's mother immediately widened her eyes in fury upon seeing this. In the blink of an eye, she yanked the man's mother's hair and, with all her strength, slapped her several times.
Each slap was filled with rage and resentment, the sharp sound of skin meeting flesh echoing through the silent hall. The woman's face quickly swelled and reddened, and her hair tangled from the forceful pull.
"Stop talking nonsense! Do you have any conscience? I've been helping with the child, spending money and effort, yet you still complain about me! It's you two who have no shame.
Who knows what your daughter has been up to, seducing someone outside and causing my son's death!" The man's mother screamed, struggling as she shouted at the top of her lungs.
"You shameless woman, how dare you accuse my daughter of seducing someone? Look at you! You're half in the grave already, yet you flirt daily, deceiving them for their money.
You can't even make your marriage work, and now you can't stand to see them living well!" The woman's mother trembled with rage, her finger shaking as she pointed at her.
The mother and daughter, who had fallen to the ground, leaned against each other for support as they slowly sat up. The little girl, terrified by the nightmarish scene before her, turned pale, her lips colorless, her body trembling uncontrollably.
"Mommy, I want to go home, I want to go home," the little girl begged, her voice breaking with each repetition. The innocence in her words, filled with fear and helplessness, stirred a deep pity in anyone who heard them.
The woman gritted her teeth, trying to push herself up from the ground. Her mother quickly reached out, attempting to help her stand.
The man's mother, however, seemed to have lost control, frantically pushing the woman's mother with all her strength. A grotesque expression twisted on her face as she leaned forward, her hands shoving forcefully.
The woman's mother lost her balance and was about to fall onto the little girl. Without hesitation, I rushed over and caught her, steadying her with one arm. I had never seen such a malicious mother-in-law before, willing to risk the child's safety to vent her anger.
Marvin glanced at me, his brow furrowing subtly, his cold, sharp gaze sweeping over everyone in the hall. "Keep making noise, and I'll have you all taken to the station!"
Someone was about to speak up in protest, but as they saw several police officers approaching, they immediately fell silent. When the officers saw Marvin, a look of surprise flashed across their faces, and they all called out in unison, "Mr. Adams!"
The noisy hall instantly fell silent. The family of the deceased was allowed to enter one by one to see their loved one for the last time. The woman, holding the child, was the first to go in. However, when she came out, she was shocked to see the two families in a heated scuffle, fighting with each other.
After the family had viewed the body, Marvin instructed the officers to escort them all away, leaving only the deceased's wife to go to the station for a statement. The woman got into the police car, and because the little girl kept crying and wanted to stay with her mother, she joined me in Marvin's car to the station.
The atmosphere in the car was heavy and tense, and the little girl was sitting quietly in her seat. At that moment, I noticed numerous old scars on the girl's arm. My heart tightened, and a look of shock and sympathy appeared on her face.
"Bennie, how did you get these wounds?"
Bennie flinched noticeably at my words, a flicker of panic and fear flashing in her eyes. She lowered her head, nervously tugging at the hem of her clothes, her lips pressed tightly together, and she hesitated, unwilling to answer.
I paused momentarily, then took a small teddy bear from my bag, waving it gently in front of her. I spoke softly, "Bennie, if you tell me what happened, I'll give you this teddy bear."
Bennie's eyes fixed on the teddy bear. After hesitating momentarily, she whispered, "Daddy hits us. He hits Mommy and me when he's angry. Mommy says once they get a divorce, Daddy won't hit us anymore."
Hearing her answer, I couldn't help but freeze momentarily, my mind racing with questions. I wondered about Bennie's father and my mother's relationship. Could he have just been a stranger they encountered on the street?
After returning to the station, I sat with Bennie at one side. Marvin bought us food, though I wasn't hungry—perhaps because I hadn't slept well the night before. Once the statement was taken, Bennie left with her mother.
As I got into Marvin's car, he glanced at me and asked, "Is there anything you'd like to eat? I can take you somewhere."
I lazily shook my head and asked, "What's the connection between the deceased and my mom?"
"Based on the information we've gathered so far, there doesn't seem to be any direct connection between them."
"Could it be just a coincidence?" I furrowed my brow, looking puzzled. "Then why would they send such a photo?"
"Finding the real culprit might give us some clues," he replied.
I nodded, falling into silence for a moment. Finally, I couldn't hold it in any longer and asked, "The killer is someone close to him, could it have been his wife?"
Marvin chuckled, "You've been watching too many dramas. How could a woman possibly have the strength to kill a man? Besides, her hand was broken by her husband before—she can't even use her right hand with any force."
"Could it be, like her mother-in-law said, that she had an affair and conspired with someone to kill her husband, who had been bullying her all along?" I asked.
"If you were Bennie's mom and already filed for divorce, would you still be thinking about killing him?" Marvin sighed lightly. "The truth is, many women who have been abused, if they dared to kill the man, they wouldn't have been abused in the first place.
"Men are always physically stronger than women, and in a moment of survival, their strength would be even greater."
