When I opened my eyes again, the sky outside was overcast. The walls around me were stark white. A faint floral scent lingered in the air, mixed with the sterile smell of disinfectant.
Bonnie was sitting in a chair beside my bed, her gaze lowered. I could not make out the expression on her face.
"Laurel, you are awake?" Bonnie stood up quickly when she saw my eyes open, her tone carrying a hint of relief.
I propped myself up. The moment I noticed the redness in Bonnie's eyes, a wave of unease washed over me.
I reached out and touched my lower abdomen. The slight curve that had been there before was now gone, flat.
"Laurel, do not be too upset. You two are still young. You will have children in the future." Bonnie held my hand, her voice soft and comforting.
Before I could say anything, she wiped away a tear with the back of her hand.
"Bonnie, I am fine." I forced a small smile, and my voice was dry and hoarse.
Under the blanket, my hands clenched together tightly. My heart ached in sharp, unbearable waves. But no matter how much it hurt, there was nothing I could do. My baby was already gone.
Bonnie looked at me in surprise as if she had not expected me to be so calm after losing my child.
I was heartbroken. The baby already had a heartbeat. I could feel it growing day by day. But now that it was gone, I had to stay alive. If I did not, I would never get my revenge.
Bonnie fixed her gaze on me and asked in a serious tone, "Laurel, how did you fall down the stairs?"
Before I could answer, footsteps sounded behind her. Maliyah and Sophina entered the hospital room together.
"Laurel, are you okay?" Maliyah asked, concern written all over her face.
The moment I saw her, I froze for a second before hesitantly asking, "Have I been asleep for a long time?"
I furrowed my brows as a strange sense of unease crept up inside me. I only remembered being pushed down the stairs. I vaguely saw Yaeger catching me before everything went dark.
"You were brought in last night. It has been a full day and night," Sophina said, pausing briefly. "Laurel, do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?"
I shook my head and glanced toward the cup on the bedside table. Before I could say anything, Sophina handed it to me.
"Laurel, why were you in the emergency exit? And how did you fall?" Maliyah asked anxiously, her brows tightly knitted together.
I did not want them to worry. More importantly, someone in Honeydew Estate was trying to harm me. This was all a setup.
That white cat appeared in the stairwell out of nowhere. And less than a minute after I stepped inside, someone deliberately locked the emergency exit door. Whoever did this wanted to trap me inside.
But there were no security cameras near the stairwell entrance. They were in the dark, watching me, while I was out in the open. The more people knew about this, the more danger it would bring them.
"I heard a cat meowing, so I went to look for it. I was not paying attention and fell," I said.
"A cat?" Maliyah and Sophina repeated at the same time.
Maliyah hesitated for a moment. "How would a cat end up in the stairwell?"
"Someone must have put it there on purpose," Sophina said, frowning.
Maliyah looked at me, doubt flickering in her eyes. "Laurel, are you sure you just fell by accident?"
I nodded slightly and took a sip of water.
Bonnie reached out and touched the cup, her expression displeased. "The water is cold. I will get you some warm water."
I picked up the cup, poured out the water, and rinsed it with hot water. Bonnie then filled it with warm water and handed it back to me.
Bonnie asked Maliyah to go back with her to prepare some food for me. Sophina stayed at the hospital to keep me company.
When Bonnie pushed open the door to leave, I noticed for the first time that there were two men in black standing outside.
I froze for a moment, furrowing my brows as I turned to Sophina and asked in a low voice, "Who are they?"
"Mr. Herrera ordered them to watch over you twenty-four hours a day," Sophina replied.
I looked at her suspiciously and asked, "Did he come to the hospital?"
Sophina nodded quickly. "Mr. Herrera stayed by your bedside all night. He only left this morning. Before he left, he told Bonnie to comfort you so you would not be too upset."
I let out a cold laugh in my heart. Maybe losing the baby was something worth celebrating for Alex. After all, he never wanted this child in the first place.
Now that the baby was gone, he no longer had anything holding him back. But what I did not understand was why he bothered pretending to care.
Was it because he felt guilty? While he was having dinner with another woman, his wife was ambushed and lost their child. Did he suddenly feel remorse? I let out a long sigh, feeling a strange sense of emptiness deep inside me.
Sophina frowned slightly and looked at me intently, her eyes turning red. "Laurel, I know you must be heartbroken, right? There is no way you just fell on your own. What really happened? You and Mr. Herrera..."
Seeing that she hesitated to continue, I chuckled softly. "Sophina, why are you so sure that I did not fall by accident?"
"Every time Dorothy mops the floor, you always wait until it is dry before walking on it," Sophina said, pursing her lips.
Then she continued, "If you really just fell by yourself, Mr. Herrera would not have sent two bodyguards to protect you. He must know this is not simple and is afraid something else will happen to you."
Hearing her words, I let out a self-deprecating laugh. Even Sophina could easily tell something was off. Bonnie must have realized this was no accident too. She knew I was lying, yet she did not expose me.
Maybe she was worried that if she asked me about it, I would not know how to explain.
After that, I asked who had taken me to the hospital. Sophina said it was a man. But by the time they arrived, he was already gone. So, Sophina never saw who he was.
I glanced at the bouquet of pink roses in the room. "Who sent these flowers?"
"The man who brought you to the hospital," Sophina said, looking at the pink roses with a curious expression. "Laurel, do you know him?"
"Why would you think that?" I asked.
Sophina spoke seriously, "Then why would he send you pink roses?"
"Maybe he just likes pink roses," I said.
"Pink roses mean 'first love' and symbolize purity, beauty, and a newfound affection," Sophina said, staring at me without blinking. "Laurel, is he your first love? Or does he have a crush on you?"
I took a sip of water from my cup. "Who would have a crush on a married woman?"
