The next morning, I had Sophina handle my discharge paperwork. I had never liked hospitals, and I did not want the people around me to keep worrying about me.
I needed time to recover. Honestly, the miscarriage was not the biggest issue for me. The doctor had said I was in good health. Still, I needed proper rest.
I sent the two bodyguards back. There was no need for them to watch over me 24/7 especially since I would not be going anywhere for a while after returning home.
Alex had come by the hospital last night, but only after I had already fallen asleep.
Maliyah told me that several senior executives had been fired from the company, and now everything was in complete chaos. Alex had to focus all his energy on managing the company.
Maliyah reassured me that I did not need to worry about Bailee stirring up trouble; she would keep an eye on that scheming woman.
But what Maliyah did not know was that Bailee and Alex had already been entangled in something far from ordinary for a long time.
The moment Zachary saw me return home, he threw himself into my arms, his face streaked with tears as he sobbed pitifully. "Laurel, you can't die! What am I supposed to do if you die?"
'This little guy is too much,' I wondered. My lips twitched slightly as I reached out to ruffle his hair. "Relax. I am not dying anytime soon."
"Laurel, are you sick?" Zachary pressed his small hand to my face, his round little face full of concern. It was obvious; he was truly afraid I would die.
After I got home, Zachary clung to me and would not leave my side. Susan was worried he would disturb me. But Zachary was unusually well-behaved, so quiet, in fact, that he barely made a sound.
Even when I was sleeping, he nestled beside me, his chubby little hand clutching the hem of my clothes.
I gently patted Zachary's back. The hollow feeling inside me did not hurt as much anymore.
After two hours of sleep, I woke up and walked into the living room. On the table, a bouquet of pink roses was neatly arranged. Before I could ask, Sophina approached and spoke softly. "Someone sent them. But he didn't leave a name or a number."
She paused for a moment, then looked up at me and suddenly asked, "Laurel, do you know who sent these?"
I nodded. "Yes."
Sophina glanced around, then lowered her voice as she pulled me onto the couch. "Laurel, Dorothy thinks these flowers are from Mr. Herrera. If he keeps sending them, do you think Mr. Herrera will get upset?"
I looked at Sophina and hesitated for a moment. "He won't."
After lunch, I asked Sophina to go downstairs with me for a walk. But as soon as we stepped into the elevator, I pressed the button for the top floor.
"I am going to see someone," I explained.
Sophina's expression flickered with surprise before she quickly seemed to realize something and gave me a small nod.
When the elevator doors opened at the top floor, I froze for a moment. The sheer luxury of the place was astonishing. My brows furrowed slightly at the sight of a painting near the staircase, one worth at least 300 thousand dollars.
Just as I was about to knock, a man dressed in a black suit approached us. He spoke with perfect courtesy. "Miss Parks, Sir asks that you wait for him in his office."
He led us into a room that had been thoughtfully prepared with tea and an assortment of afternoon pastries. "Please, make yourselves comfortable," he said before turning to close the door behind him as he left.
Sophina took a deep breath as she glanced around. Despite it being called an office, it was filled with expensive paintings and antiques.
"Laurel, is this guy some old man? How does he have so much money to waste? Who even decorates their place like this?" Sophina muttered.
A faint smile played on my lips. I took a slow sip of my freshly brewed coffee and replied, "You'll find out soon enough."
We had been waiting for about twenty minutes when the office door slowly swung open.
Yaeger stepped inside with an air of composure. His features were refined and strikingly handsome, yet there was a certain coldness to his demeanor. He wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, which only added to his aristocratic elegance.
This distinguished, handsome man sat down across from me, saying nothing.
Sophina instinctively stood up, her voice trembling slightly as she spoke. "Laurel, I'll wait for you outside."
I found this strange. I had assumed Sophina only got nervous around Alex, but now, seeing her so flustered in front of Yaeger as well was unexpected.
"Laurel, how have you been?" Yaeger's question caught me off guard.
This gentleman had clear, bright eyes. When he smiled, it was as if they were filled with light.
"Thank you for saving me." I hesitated for a long moment before finally speaking.
Yaeger's lips curved into a smile, his eyes shimmering. As I gazed at him, for a fleeting moment, it felt like I was looking at the same person I had met all those years ago. I lost myself in the memory.
Back then, I always imagined he must have grown up in a world of warmth, bathed in sunlight. That was why his smile had always been so radiant, so full of life.
"Did you come all this way just to thank me?" Yaeger studied me with a complex expression, a faint smile lingering on his lips. Then, in an unhurried tone, he added, "Are you not curious about who wanted to harm you?"
There was something unreadable in his gaze, a subtle nuance that was difficult to decipher.
I picked up my coffee and took a sip, aware that his eyes never left me.
"Mr. Duesler, please stop sending me flowers." I took a deep breath, my tone sinking slightly. "My husband will not be pleased if he sees them."
"Is that so?" A flicker of doubt crossed his exquisitely sculpted face. "Are you sure your husband would truly be upset?"
"Are you close with him?" I looked at Yaeger impassively. I had never expected to see him again after all these years.
After middle school graduation, Yaeger had been sent abroad by his family. His sudden departure had left many of our female classmates heartbroken.
For years, there had been no news of him. Even the girl who was once considered the most beautiful in our school still could not forget him.
What surprised me most was that he still remembered my name.
Yaeger did not answer my question. Instead, he simply smiled. "Laurel, after all these years, you haven't changed one bit."
I stood up and spoke flatly. "I am leaving."
"You may not be so lucky next time," Yaeger suddenly said.
A strange unease settled in my chest, yet my face remained calm and composed. "Life and death are dictated by fate," I replied before striding out of Yaeger's office without looking back.
The moment I stepped outside, I realized I was trembling. The faint warmth that had momentarily surfaced in my heart vanished as quickly as it had appeared. This reunion felt inevitable, yet at the same time, completely unexpected.
