Marvin stared at me in shock, taking a deep breath to steady the anger and worry surging inside him. "Do you know who it was?"
"I do, but I have no proof." I pulled the corners of my lips into a bitter smile, my gaze turning cold as I looked out the car window.
The moment I saw Yaeger, I understood everything. He had always been mild-mannered; there was no way he would have thrown Liesel out of Honeydew Estate just because she accidentally bumped into me.
I did not know why Yaeger happened to be there, but I knew he would never hurt me. In fact, he had probably known all along that Liesel had deliberately tried to knock me down and cause my miscarriage.
She never expected to run into Yaeger. She certainly never expected him to be someone with such a powerful background.
"Who was it?" Marvin pressed impatiently.
"Liesel." I paused before adding, "She intended to push me, but unfortunately for her, she failed."
I rarely left the house, so Liesel never had a good opportunity. The one time she did, it ended up getting ruined.
"Do you have a grudge against her?" Marvin frowned, clearly surprised. Then as if something clicked, his expression shifted. "Wait? Didn't you say you didn't see who it was? And someone strong enough to push you down the stairs in one move, how could that have been a woman?"
"It wasn't her. It was her boyfriend," I said.
The moment I saw Liesel, I felt like I had seen her before. Later, I found out she was a streamer, and I assumed I had just come across one of her videos before. But then, when I saw her boyfriend, something felt off.
A married man who could afford to rent an apartment in Honeydew Estate would not rush over in the middle of his workday just for his mistress. More importantly, his eyes flashed with shock the moment he saw me.
At first, I thought he recognized me because he knew Alex. But that wasn't it.
He had assumed Liesel had succeeded, that she had knocked me down, and caused my miscarriage, and that was why she had been kicked out of Honeydew Estate. When he saw me standing there perfectly fine, that was why he looked so stunned.
I told Marvin everything I had pieced together.
Marvin sat in silence for a long time before finally speaking in a low voice. "So there is someone behind them."
I nodded quietly and let out a soft sigh. "If I am not mistaken, the person backing that man is Austin."
"Austin?" Marvin narrowed his eyes as he studied me. "Have you met that man before?"
"I have met the woman." A self-deprecating smile tugged at my lips. "The first time I saw her, she looked familiar. After everything happened, I finally remembered that she used to be Austin's colleague. She had cosmetic surgery. She looks nothing like she did before."
Marvin's hands curled into fists, his eyes deep with a dangerous glint. "So he planted his people here, set everything up to make it look like an accident, hoping to make you miscarry. But when that failed, Liesel's boyfriend stepped in and pushed you down the stairs?"
I slowly lifted my head and met Marvin's gaze. My voice was quiet. "Maybe, at first, he never planned to get involved personally. But he probably realized he wouldn't get another chance, so he deliberately lured me into the emergency exit."
What he didn't expect was that I had always been sensitive to scents. Even without surveillance cameras, I recognized the faint trace of his cologne.
Of course, that wasn't the only thing that made me suspicious. After returning to Honeydew Estate, I used the excuse of searching for my lost phone to check the security footage.
That was when I saw him coming back right after I had my accident. The facial recognition system at the entrance had not yet deleted his previous entry record, which allowed me to catch him.
Marvin opened his mouth as if to say something, but no words came out.
Seeing his hesitant expression, I let out a quiet, bitter laugh. "You don't have to comfort me. Maybe this child was never meant to be."
"Does Alex know about this?" Marvin asked, his gaze deep and serious.
I was momentarily stunned. I had not expected Marvin to ask that question. For a brief moment, I did not know how to answer.
Alex was sharp. If he had investigated, he would have definitely found Liesel, and naturally, that would have led him to Austin. One day was more than enough for Alex to uncover the truth.
Yet, he had not said a word to me about it. And ever since I woke up, I had not seen him.
I could not help but suspect that he had known everything all along. He was avoiding me because he did not know how to talk to me about it.
It made sense. Even though the child I carried was his, he had never wanted it in the first place.
Now that I had miscarried and the child had died at the hands of his own nephew; If Alex truly wanted to, with his capabilities, he could have easily gathered the evidence he needed.
"I bet he knows everything but just does not want to pursue it," Marvin scoffed. "For all we know, he is relieved the child is gone. Now he does not have to worry about it anymore."
As soon as the words left his mouth, Marvin realized how harsh they sounded. He glanced at me awkwardly. "Laurel, do not be upset. He is not worth it."
"I am not upset," I replied coldly.
Marvin was right. Losing the child benefited Alex more than it hurt him.
First, now that Alex had solid evidence of Austin plotting against his child, Alex could use it to further secure his position within the Herrera family.
After all, Alex had just lost his child; this was a family scandal that could not be made public. Raphael and Lena would never allow Alex to ruin the Herrera family's reputation.
Second, if Alex wanted to divorce me, this made it much easier.
If the child had lived, he would have had to stay by my side, pretending for at least three years until custody was settled. Now, he no longer had to keep up the act, sparing himself a great deal of trouble in the future.
Marvin seemed to want to say more, but I cut him off. "What did you find on Wilhelm's body?" I changed the subject abruptly.
I had yet to find Angela's killer. I still did not know the real reason behind my mother's sudden heart failure. There were too many things I needed to do, far too many. I had no time to waste on grief. Yaeger was right. Next time, I might not be so lucky.
That was why I could not keep running. Before anyone else made their move, I had to put my own plans into action.
Now that the child was gone, I no longer had anything holding me back.
"Wilhelm had been injected with some kind of drug," Marvin said after a brief pause. "Twice. Once through water, and the other through direct injection. And one more thing, his heart is missing."
"He was drugged and his heart is missing?" My chest tightened as a sinking feeling spread through me. "He was killed for his heart?" I murmured in disbelief.
"I do, but I have no proof." I pulled the corners of my lips into a bitter smile, my gaze turning cold as I looked out the car window.
