Marvin was still in shock when I led him into the jewelry store.
There were not many customers inside. As soon as we stepped in, a sales associate approached us with a professional smile, though it was clear her mind was elsewhere.
Maybe she thought we looked too plain, assuming we were not big spenders. Wasting too much energy on us would only drain her enthusiasm.
"What can I help you with today?" she asked, her tone bright but perfunctory.
Marvin glanced at me lazily, his voice carrying a hint of indifference. "Your birthday is coming up. What do you want? I'll buy it for you."
I shot him a sideways glance. "With your salary? You can barely support yourself, and you still want to buy me a birthday gift?"
"It's fine. I want to," Marvin said, lying through his teeth with a completely straight face.
The saleswoman maintained her polite smile, but there was obvious disdain in her eyes. Seeing that we were not likely to make a big purchase, she quickly passed us off to a younger sales associate.
Marvin and I exchanged a knowing look. The next moment, I felt a sharp gaze land on us.
"Is there anything specific you're looking for? I can show you around," the young sales associate asked eagerly. She was clearly new, showing no signs of dismissiveness despite our simple attire. Instead, she enthusiastically introduced the gold watch I had been eyeing.
"I want to see couples' rings. Do you have any?" Marvin suddenly said.
I hesitated for a moment, instantly realizing he had also noticed the unusual attention on us. But a childish trick like this would only work on young couples.
If Alex truly cared about me, he would not be with Bailee.
Marvin had no idea about Alex's leg injury or the real reason Alex was with Bailee. He did not know that Alex had no choice.
"Yes, of course, miss. Take a look. Which style do you like? These are our newest designs, and if you find something you love, we can custom-make it for you," the young associate said enthusiastically.
Seeing how hard she was trying, I picked out several rings that I liked.
"And sir, what's your ring size? I can find the right fit for you," said the saleswoman.
Marvin was just about to answer when a voice interrupted from behind.
"Mrs. Herrera, what are you doing here?" Bailee walked straight up to me, her eyes flickering with surprise when she saw Marvin standing beside me. "Mr. Adams, you're here too? Are you two shopping for rings?"
The young sales associate froze for a second as if trying to process what Bailee had just said.
Marvin looked completely unfazed by Bailee's sudden appearance. A cryptic smile tugged at his lips as he glanced at Alex, who was sitting in a wheelchair.
Bailee quickly spoke again. "Mrs. Herrera, I'm here with Mr. Herrera to help him pick out a gift."
"A gift? For me?" I blinked at her, then turned to Alex.
"Of course," Bailee replied. "Your birthday is coming up, so Mr. Herrera asked me to help him choose a present for you."
I smiled, my gaze locking onto Bailee.
The first time she messaged me, I had not confronted Alex. Instead, I chose to endure it in silence. Maybe Bailee assumed that as long as I remained Alex's wife, I would continue to tolerate anything she did.
Bailee never expected that I would suddenly show up not just alone but with another man. For a split second, surprise flashed across Bailee's flawless face, and she quickly masked it. She did not panic. Instead, she immediately tried to use Marvin to create tension between Alex and me to achieve her goal.
Bailee believed that my encounter with Marvin here was just a coincidence.
But in reality, there were many malls nearby. I chose this one because Alex had a habit of shopping in familiar places. And I was the one who had introduced Lawrence to this shopping center.
Habits were scary. They weaved their way into someone's life without them even realizing it.
Maybe I did not actually love Alex so much. I thought I just got used to having him around. I got used to the way he treated me. It was only when I saw him standing next to someone else that I felt uneasy and that I felt hurt.
But maybe I never truly loved him. Maybe I did not even know what love was. Because a person without a heart could not feel love.
"If he really wanted to buy me a gift, shouldn't he have brought me here himself?" I gazed at Alex intently.
"Mrs. Herrera, Mr. Herrera knew that you just got out of the hospital and that you're not in the best condition, so he—" Bailee said.
"Shut up. Who do you think you are? Do you really think it's your place to speak here?" My smile disappeared in an instant as I glared coldly at Bailee.
She froze, seemingly caught off guard by my sudden outburst, especially since I showed no hesitation despite the people watching.
Bailee looked flustered, but the flicker of delight in her eyes did not escape me. She was pleased with my reaction and pleased to see me losing my composure like this.
In her mind, a man like Alex would never tolerate such an unreasonable scene, especially in public. She knew men's preferences better than anyone.
But Alex did not say a word. He remained seated, lazily leaning against the chair, his gaze fixed on me the entire time.
There was a trace of curiosity and confusion in his eyes. The moment my expression returned to normal, he slowly rolled his wheelchair forward until he was right in front of me. "Pick out whatever you like. I'll pay for it."
I smiled at him, my voice carrying a hint of excitement as I leaned closer. "Anything I like?"
Alex met my gaze unhurriedly. "Anything."
Bailee stood to the side, dumbfounded. She had not expected Alex to react this way. He wasn't angry at my sudden outburst, and instead, he was gentle, letting me choose whatever I wanted. He didn't even say a single word of reproach.
But I knew the truth. The only reason Alex was indulging me like this was that he felt guilty. He felt guilty for betraying me and guilty for making me lose our child.
For him, anything that could be solved with money was not a problem at all. More importantly, if he ever decided to divorce me, the choice would always be his, not mine.
"Wrap up all the rings I just looked at. Oh, and I want the whole set," I said expressionlessly before pointing at the gold watch in the display case. "And I want this watch too."
"Mrs. Herrera, that's a men's watch," the saleswoman reminded me.
"I know," I replied. "I'm buying it for someone."
