I knew Alex just wanted me to hurry up and leave so I would not get in the way of his cozy little time with Bailee.
The last unexpected incident had ruined their date. Alex had planned to make it up to Bailee with gifts and an apology, but I had shown up halfway through and spoiled his plans again.
What he did not know was that everything had been orchestrated by Bailee.
Her goal was simple to make Alex and me tear each other apart in public. Bailee wanted everyone to think I was some vicious wife. Maybe she had held back before because I was carrying the Herrera family's child. But now that I had lost the baby, she no longer saw me as a threat.
What she did not expect was that I would expose her identity right then and there. Even if she did not care about her own reputation, she had to consider the Lambert family and Harold. After all, admitting to being a mistress in public was no small matter.
Besides, Marvin was a police officer. If she confessed today, by tomorrow, the entire department would know that Harold's niece had gotten involved with a married man. Bailee could humiliate herself all she wanted, but Harold could not afford that disgrace.
When I extended an invitation, Bailee had no choice but to accept. If she refused, it would mean she was afraid.
Bailee put on a show of being indifferent, but in reality, she was desperate for me to disappear from Alex's life.
From the way Alex treated her, I could tell that the two of them had reached some kind of agreement. One thing was clear. Bailee was in a hurry to become Alex's wife. But Alex did not seem ready for a divorce just yet, though he still made an effort to protect her.
"Laurel, why did you invite Bailee to dinner?" Marvin gave me a confused look. "She does not exactly seem like the friendly type."
"Alex's leg was ruined in that accident. Bailee was the one who saved him. And right now, if he wants to recover, she is the only one who can heal him," I said.
Marvin's eyes widened in shock, his face frozen in disbelief.
After a long silence, he muttered, "That accident wasn't really an accident, was it? You think someone was trying to kill Alex and Bailee isn't as simple as she seems."
I nodded. "There were a lot of details I overlooked before."
"Why did Harold save Alex? Is there some kind of secret between them?" Marvin narrowed his eyes, his expression growing darker. After a brief pause, his gaze sharpened. "Bailee is Austin's secretary, right? Do you think she and Austin were working together to get rid of your baby?"
"But I don't have any proof." I let out a bitter laugh and sighed deeply.
"Laurel, you should just divorce Alex as soon as possible," Marvin suddenly said.
I glanced at him. That usual cocky smirk of his was nowhere to be seen; his face was uncharacteristically serious.
"Alex was never a good person. Sure, he is good-looking, but deep down, he is as ruthless and calculating as they come," he continued.
"If I had never married Alex, would I have been able to live a peaceful life?" I curled my lips into a faint smile. "If that were the case, my mom wouldn't have suddenly died of a heart attack."
Marvin took a deep breath. "Everything just keeps getting more complicated. Wilhelm's case will be solved sooner or later, but staying by Alex's side is too dangerous for you."
"Don't worry. I can take care of myself," I said.
"I know you can fight, but what if they use a gun? What if they just kidnap you?" Marvin's voice carried a hint of frustration.
"Let's go. If we don't leave now, Bailee will have more time to badmouth me to Alex," I said.
Marvin let out a resigned sigh and started the car. Twenty minutes later, we arrived at Honeydew Estate.
Marvin's car was not allowed inside the community, so he had to park in the public lot outside.
The rain had not stopped, but it had lessened significantly. There was only one umbrella in the car, the one I had brought. So, we shared it.
The umbrella was actually quite large, more than enough for two people. But Marvin still had half his shoulder exposed to the rain, worried that I might get wet.
Marvin had always been a particularly gentle and considerate person. I could hardly find any flaws in him.
If I had to name one, perhaps it was that sometimes his behavior was a little odd. He was the son of Adams Group, yet he refused to live a comfortable life.
He would rather eat fast food than spend a single cent of the allowance Michael gave him every month. I had never met someone so indifferent to money.
Marvin's features were sharp and striking, his skin tanned by the sea breeze, and he seemed even thinner than before.
"Wilhelm's case is still under police investigation, and the details must remain strictly confidential," he said.
"I know." I nodded.
"You are not allowed to investigate on your own." Marvin furrowed his brows, and his tone suddenly turned cold. "Someone was bold enough to go after Alex, which means they are dangerous and have a complicated background.
"Anyone around Alex could be a threat to him, so you should keep your distance especially from Bailee. The Lambert family may not have publicly acknowledged her, but she is not simple."
"I know. The fact that Wilhelm's heart was removed while he was still alive means the killer was highly skilled.
"At first, I thought the killer had no choice but to sink the body in the river, but in reality, he clearly intended to stir up chaos in Nifelheim City." I paused and looked up at Marvin. "Everything is pointing to one person."
"Maddox." Marvin and I spoke in unison. A mocking smile tugged at the corners of my lips.
As soon as we stepped out of the elevator, we saw Maliyah standing by the door, looking especially indignant. "Laurel, how could Alex bring Bailee home? He is being way too blatant about it!" she fumed.
"I invited her to dinner," I said.
Maliyah froze for a moment, then silently nodded before lowering her voice. "Are you trying to make her back off?"
I shook my head and spoke slowly. "I just want her to know that if she wants to live in Honeydew Estate, I can move out."
"Laurel, are you insane? Are you planning to divorce Alex?" Maliyah's eyes widened in shock. Then, she turned to Marvin and quickly said, "Marvin, talk some sense into her. She is being too impulsive right now."
"Actually, I think it would be good for her to get out of this mess as soon as possible." Marvin thought for a moment before continuing seriously, "Alex is out there fooling around every day. If I were his wife, I would have kicked him out ages ago."
Just as Marvin was getting into his speech, the door behind us suddenly swung open. Alex stood there with his cane, staring straight at Marvin. His face was dark, yet there was a faint, chilling smile on his lips, one that made the air feel heavy with unease.
