I did not press further when I heard Alex's response. The answer no longer mattered to me. Digging any deeper would only humiliate myself.
Alex had never wanted that child. In fact, he had spent quite a bit of money to make sure I got rid of it.
"Ms. Foster, do you like this place?" I turned to Bailee, my voice carrying a warm smile.
"I do," Bailee replied, though there was a flicker of confusion in her gaze as she looked at me.
"If you like it, then have your sweetheart buy it for you," I suggested.
Bailee was momentarily stunned before quickly asking, "Mr. Herrera, are you planning to sell this place?"
Alex frowned slightly. After a brief pause, he spoke slowly. "No."
"I am," I said, setting down my fork and eyeing Bailee with interest. "Why don't you ask him? I can give you a good deal."
Bailee looked a little lost. She could not help but ask, "Mrs. Herrera, if you sell the house, where will you live?"
"Where will I live?" I furrowed my brows, pretending to think it over. "I have not decided yet. If I really have nowhere else to go, I suppose I could always return to the Parks family."
"Are you planning to get a divorce and split the assets?" Marvin asked in a teasing tone.
I turned to Alex and let out a light chuckle. "Darling, if you have someone you like, just let me know in advance. I will respect your decision, and I will not try to get back together with you."
At that moment, Dorothy walked out of the kitchen carrying a pot of soup.
"Mr. Herrera, would you like a bowl?" she asked while serving soup for both Alex and me. "Mrs. Herrera, this fish is wild-caught. Mr. Herrera specifically asked me to buy it today."
I took the bowl from her and sipped a little of the soup.
How ridiculous. Even Dorothy had noticed something unusual between Alex and Bailee. She was obviously trying to send Bailee a warning, reminding her that I was the lady of this house. But in my opinion, it was meaningless.
Alex had never been an indecisive man. He had his reasons, his so-called obligations. But I had made my stance clear. If he ever brought up divorce, I would not refuse him.
And I would sell this house. If he wanted it, Bailee could always buy it back for him.
Alex set down his bowl and looked at me calmly. "Laurel, if you do not like it here, we can move somewhere else."
I smiled faintly and took another sip of the soup. The taste was excellent. Dorothy's cooking was getting better and better.
Maybe Alex did not want a divorce because of guilt. But if he was unwilling to leave me, what would he do about his leg?
"It is getting late. I should not overstay my welcome," Bailee said as she stood up. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of the pink roses sitting in the living room, and for a split second, her expression flashed with surprise.
"The driver is outside," Alex said, giving her a brief glance.
After Bailee stepped out the door, Alex's sharp gaze landed on Marvin, clearly curious as to why he was still here when everyone else had left.
Under Alex's watchful eyes, Marvin leisurely finished two more bowls of soup, even taking the time to compliment Dorothy's cooking.
That flattered Dorothy immensely. If Alex had not been sitting there, she would probably have welcomed Marvin to drop by for free meals anytime.
"It is getting late. I have work tomorrow," Marvin said before finally making his exit.
The sky outside had darkened completely. Thunder rumbled, and before long, heavy rain began to pour.
I sent Marvin a message and, once I knew he was safely in his car, I turned and sat back down on the couch.
Zachary wrapped his arms around me and whispered, "Laurel, can I sleep with you tonight? The thunder is scary."
"Alright," I agreed.
Seeing his pitiful expression, I reached out and gently patted his head. Under Dorothy's care, Zachary had become even rounder.
"Laurel, are you mad at me?" Zachary tilted his head up to look at me, his big eyes filled with confusion.
I was slightly startled before I realized what he meant. I had scolded him earlier. Zachary must have thought I was angry, which was why he had been so quiet at the dinner table.
I let out a silent sigh. Maybe, in his heart, I was the only person in this house he truly felt he could rely on. And he was afraid of making me upset.
"Zachary, I am not mad at you anymore." I gently picked him up and kissed his chubby cheek.
Zachary kissed me back on the face and said seriously, "Laurel, do not be sad. I will always be here with you. Maybe the little baby just was not ready yet, so it did not come. But when it is, it will definitely return to you."
I froze for a second before chuckling. Pinching his soft little face, I responded, "Okay, Zachary. You are such a sweetheart."
Zachary blinked his long, curled lashes, then suddenly glanced at Alex, who was sitting silently on the couch. Leaning in close, he whispered in my ear, "Laurel, I will never be like Alex when I grow up."
"And what is he like?" I asked.
Zachary opened his mouth, thought for a moment, then said, "A jerk."
Before I could react, he firmly declared, "Laurel, I will protect you when I grow up. I will never let anyone bully you."
After saying that, he could not help but glance back at Alex again.
Susan took Zachary upstairs for a bath, and soon, the living room was left with just Alex and me.
Closing the book in his hands, Alex lifted his head to look at me. "Can we talk?"
I met his gaze. "What do you want to say?"
Alex studied me with suspicion. "You do not actually believe that there is something going on between Bailee and me, do you?"
"Did you two not get a room together?" I asked flatly.
Alex was silent for two seconds before nodding. "But it is not what you think."
"I know." My eyes drifted to the pink roses on the table, and Bailee's shocked expression when she saw them flashed through my mind.
If Alex truly intended to take responsibility, Bailee would not have been so eager to provoke me.
That left two possibilities. Firstly, Alex slept with her but refused to acknowledge it. Secondly, she had orchestrated everything herself to create a misunderstanding between us.
"What did you find out?" I asked.
Alex hesitated for a moment before replying, "What do you want to know?"
I let out a cold laugh, fixing him with an icy stare before sighing. "You know who was behind my miscarriage. So what happens next? Are you divorcing me? Otherwise, how are you supposed to keep up this act?"
"I told you. I will not divorce you," Alex said as he got up from the couch, limping toward his room. Just as he reached the doorway, he suddenly turned back and said, "Tonight, you and Zachary sleep in my room."
