Alex paid no attention to Danny's words and simply waved a hand dismissively, signaling that there was no need to report anything to him anymore.
Danny looked stunned but had no choice but to nod in agreement. His face was ashen as he turned and left the hospital room.
Watching his darkened expression, I could not help but chuckle twice.
With Leah's temper and personality, once she stepped into that office, everyone in the company was going to be in for a nightmare.
After all, Leah was highly favored by Lena, and this transfer to the branch office was personally arranged by Raphael. Leah's greatest ambition was to one day climb over Alex's head and flaunt her power.
When I was at the Herrera residence, Leah was already arrogant and overbearing, acting like she was above everyone else. Now that she was coming to the Herrera Group's branch office, there was no way she would treat Alex's people kindly.
Thinking about Danny's miserable face just now, I let out another amused laugh.
"Aren't you worried that she's actually coming for you?" Alex asked.
"What's there to be afraid of? It's not like she can beat me," I said casually, raising an eyebrow.
A cold glint flickered in Alex's deep eyes. "Do you think she could be the one behind all this, trying to get rid of me?"
"You tell me?" I said, watching him with interest. He had known all along that Raphael would send Leah over, which was why he had come up with that ridiculous plan for us to stage a fake divorce.
"I have never liked Leah, but she cannot die," Alex said, his eyes flashing with a chilling sharpness.
My heart clenched, and I looked at him in surprise.
"You already know who's trying to kill you, don't you?" I narrowed my eyes at him.
Alex shook his head and answered without hesitation. "I do not know who it is, but I am certain the person is a member of the Herrera family, the one who ordered my abduction back then. I was lucky to survive and return to the family. But all these years, I still don't understand why me?"
Hearing his words, I was momentarily at a loss for how to respond.
The Herrera family had so many heirs, yet Raphael had chosen Alex as his successor.
He had brought this illegitimate son back into the family, and Lena had even taken Alex under her name. The reasons behind it all were worth pondering.
And because of that, for so many years, Alex had been unable to acknowledge his birth mother. They could only exist as strangers.
The members of the Herrera family all seemed to fear Alex, but few truly cared for him.
I walked over to him in silence. "Just say it. What do you need me to do?"
A faint smirk curved Alex's lips. "Since I need to rest and recover, and you're in good health now, the company is yours for the time being."
Hearing this, I remained expressionless and said flatly, "You are digging a pit for me to fall into."
"Really? But weren't you just laughing a moment ago?" Alex said.
I shot him a sideways glance. Leah coming to Nifelheim City was nothing to be happy about.
I had just been gloating over someone else's misfortune, only to realize karma had come for me just as fast. Now I understood. Alex had just shoved me straight into the fire.
"Aren't you afraid I might use this chance for a little personal revenge?" I asked.
All of a sudden, Alex stood up. In the next instant, he leaned down abruptly, and his soft lips pressed against mine.
Just as I was about to push him away, his low, enticing voice whispered near my ear, "Someone is watching me from across the way. I can't leave here."
The moment Alex pulled away, I found myself momentarily forgetting how to breathe.
We had had sex before, yet every time he got close, I still couldn't stop my heart from racing. Alex's gaze burned into me, intense and unwavering as if he intended to consume me entirely.
Then, I suddenly realized his strength was fading. Without thinking, I reached out and wrapped my arms around his waist.
Pressing tightly against his solid chest, I immediately felt the fine layer of sweat on my palms. My throat was unbearably dry.
The door to the hospital room suddenly swung open, and Bailee froze in place when she saw us embracing. A look of surprise flashed across her face.
"Ms. Foster, you're here," I said softly, quickly pulling away from Alex and carefully helping him back into his wheelchair.
I looked up and saw Bailee standing at the door. She was dressed in a white blouse and a form-fitting skirt, her wavy hair casually draped over her shoulders. Her curvaceous figure radiated an irresistible allure.
Alex slowly lifted his head and glanced at Bailee. His usually regal and cold demeanor softened slightly when he saw her. "Is there something you need?"
Bailee walked over to him. "Mr. Herrera, Austin asked me to come and take care of you. He's concerned that the nurses here aren't providing adequate care. Since Mrs. Herrera is here, I'll wait outside. If you need anything, just call for me."
"Bailee," Alex called out, stopping her as she was about to turn and leave. His tone was neutral. "You're Austin's secretary, so there's no need for you to stay with me. The headquarters has sent a new Vice President to temporarily take over my responsibilities.
"The Nifelheim City development project is about to start, and there are likely quite a few issues. You should help Austin more."
Bailee paused for a moment, seemingly surprised that Alex would ask her to go back to the company.
I was equally surprised, even wondering if Alex no longer planned on fully recovering his leg.
"And one more thing," Alex added. "I'll have Laurel go back to the company to oversee things. She'll take over as general manager. Any issues the company can't handle, she'll take care of."
"Mr. Herrera, are you not planning to return to the company?" Bailee's voice was filled with astonishment.
A faint smile curved Alex's lips. He reached out and took my hand, speaking softly. "I'm injured and can't go to the company every day for now. Laurel will temporarily oversee the company. Besides, Leah will be going to the company as well. Even without me, the company will continue to run as usual."
Bailee seemed like she wanted to say something more, but in the end, she chose to remain silent. She nodded and turned to leave the room.
Once the sound of her footsteps faded, I couldn't hold back any longer. "What do you mean, 'any issues the company can't handle, I'll take care of'? Do you think I can handle them?"
Alex raised an eyebrow. "I'll have Danny help you. As for the problems even he can't solve, I'm sure you'll find someone else to help."
I froze for a moment, eyeing the familiar yet distant man in front of me with suspicion.
Alex continued, speaking calmly. "Your brother should have arrived in Nifelheim City, right? He might come to the hospital tomorrow to see me. After they leave tomorrow, you can go to the company."
"What about your leg? Aren't you going to continue your treatment? Do you want me to take care of you for the rest of your life?" I frowned, coldly questioning him.
"If I can't stand up for the rest of my life, would you think I'm a burden?" Alex asked.
