I stared at Alex's handsome face and replied without hesitation, "Of course I would. You'd better find a way to stand up."
"And what if your husband had to choose between becoming a cripple or a broke man? Which would you pick?" Alex pressed, not giving up.
"I'd choose a rich husband who isn't crippled," I said calmly.
"You really are ruthless," Alex sighed lightly, though his face still held a gentle smile, his beautiful eyes glistening like starlight.
I smiled back at him, pursed my lips, and spoke slowly, "A woman who isn't ruthless will never have a solid place."
I knew Alex wanted to give up on himself. He was probably already prepared to go down with the other party if it came to that.
I couldn't help but wonder who exactly wanted to end his life.
The most likely culprit was Lena. After enduring humiliation and raising someone else's son, she had never expected that he would become the future heir of Herrera Group. Naturally, she must have resentment.
But with her ability, getting rid of Alex wouldn't be too difficult. If she really wanted to kill him, why had she waited until now?
Lena was already elderly, and Raphael was still alive. She couldn't possibly do it herself, so she would have someone else do it for her.
The eldest child, Andrew, had been abroad for a long time. His relationship with Raphael and Lena didn't seem particularly strong.
The third child, Kayden, who was Austin's father, appeared to be an easygoing person who wouldn't cause trouble. But in reality, he was very calculating.
More importantly, Lena had always doted on Austin and placed special importance on Amanda.
The fifth child, Aloysius, was gentle and elegant. He and his wife, Linda, had only one daughter, Wanda. It seemed that he and Alex were on relatively good terms compared to the other family members.
Leah was Lena's favorite daughter.
The sixth child, Celine, seemed almost invisible, especially since she had married out of the family. I suspected Celine's personality was ordinary, and she hadn't done much to benefit the Herrera family, which didn't make Lena particularly fond of her.
More importantly, although Celine's husband was a well-known jeweler, he didn't seem very concerned about Celine or the Herrera family members.
It seemed Celine wasn't treated well in her husband's family. It made sense that she wasn't valued by the Herrera family members. In a family like this, sometimes the bonds of blood didn't feel as sincere as the friendships formed by outsiders.
Among them, the only people with enough ambition and ability to harm Alex were Kayden and Aloysius.
Of course, we couldn't rule out Leah and Celine, especially since I always felt there was something more to Celine.
Celine seemed invisible, but every time she returned to the Herrera family, the servants treated her with great respect. That seemed a bit strange.
Whenever Leah saw Celine, her eyes were full of disdain, but she had never openly provoked her. On the other hand, Alex didn't seem to have a good relationship with Celine.
To be more precise, Alex didn't seem to get along with any of the Herrera family members, except for Aloysius. But even Aloysius was suspicious.
Kayden could hide his sharp edges, and Aloysius could do the same. Finding the person behind all of this wasn't going to be easy.
At four in the morning, I woke up suddenly from a nightmare, my heart racing. In the dream, Alex had been shot and had fallen off a cliff into the sea.
Even after waking up, I still felt shaken by the terrifying dream, my heart pounding with unease.
Next to me, Zachary was sleeping soundly, snoring lightly. He seemed to be mumbling something, though I couldn't make it out clearly. But in the end, I heard him call out "Mommy".
I gently patted his head. It was only natural for a child to call for his mother.
As a mother, Joy naturally wanted to raise Zachary herself. Deep down, I truly admired Joy. Joy originally thought that with the child in her belly, she would be able to get everything she wanted. But after her dreams were shattered, being able to raise Zachary on her own was really no easy feat.
I missed my mother, and I also missed the child who hadn't been lost yet. When I opened my eyes again, the sky outside had already brightened.
Zachary rubbed his sleepy eyes, sat up in bed, and stared at me with curiosity on his face. "Laurel, are you going to the hospital to see Alex? I want to go too."
I originally wanted to refuse, but when I saw the eager look on Zachary's face and remembered how he had called out for his mother in his sleep last night, a surge of pity welled up inside me.
"Go brush your teeth and wash your face. We'll go together after breakfast," I said.
"Really?" Zachary stared at me, his eyes full of disbelief.
When I nodded, he immediately jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom, as though afraid I might change my mind at the last second.
After I got ready, I suddenly heard noises coming from outside.
I took Zachary by the hand and walked out of the room. When we reached the living room, I saw Leah sitting quietly on the sofa.
Leah arrogantly ordered Sophina to take her luggage to the master bedroom, demanding that it be tidied up for her today.
Sophina stood still, perhaps still half-asleep, looking a bit dazed.
"What are you standing there for? Take my luggage inside!" Leah lifted her head, glaring at Sophina with cold, sharp eyes, her tone full of disdain and disgust.
I had to admit, Sophina really was too soft-hearted.
Sophina hesitated, then nervously spoke up. "Leah, the master bedroom is Mr. Herrera's room."
"He's in the hospital now," Leah glanced at her, sneering. "From now on, the master bedroom is mine. Maybe, in a while, the whole house will be mine too."
Upon hearing Leah's words, I furrowed my brows. Was she still asleep, or had she completely lost her mind this early in the morning?
"Leah, I didn't expect you to come to Nifelheim City so soon," I said, walking up to her with a smile.
Leah didn't even acknowledge me. She simply glanced at me and scoffed. "Get someone to tidy up the master bedroom. I'll be staying here from now on. You all need to move out quickly. I'm giving you one day."
"You want me to move out?" I took a deep breath to calm myself. It wouldn't be good for my health to lose my temper this early, especially in front of Zachary.
"Yeah." Leah suddenly stood up from the sofa, glaring at me with an expression full of disdain and contempt. "Didn't you know I'm here to take over the Herrera Group branch in Nifelheim City? I'll live wherever I want."
After saying this, Leah scanned me up and down, then scoffed again. "Laurel, don't think that just because you're the Parks family's daughter, you deserve to be Alex's wife. As long as you don't have a child, you'll eventually be kicked out."
"And what if your husband had to choose between becoming a cripple or a broke man? Which would you pick?" Alex pressed, not giving up.
"I'd choose a rich husband who isn't crippled," I said calmly.
