She had a great figure, full breasts and a curvy bottom, and her looks were stunning. Even her voice was pleasant to listen to. Not only men but even women would be drawn to her delicate, sweet-sounding voice.
Kailyn's eyes were deep, her voice low and cold. "Austin, who is she? You told me you were at the office. Why are you here?"
Austin furrowed his brows, hesitating for a moment before speaking. "Kailyn, Mandy is a colleague of mine. She accidentally burned herself."
Kailyn's cold, sharp gaze slowly turned toward Mandy, who stood behind Austin. She smiled a brilliant smile, but to anyone watching, it sent a chill down their spine.
Although Kailyn wasn't particularly fond of Austin, he was still her fiancé.
Kailyn couldn't tolerate someone taking what was hers. Especially since Mandy, standing behind Austin, appeared quite disheveled. Kailyn, a noble young lady who had always looked down on others, could never stand the thought of losing to someone like this.
Even though Austin insisted that he and Mandy Conner were just colleagues, Kailyn wasn't buying it.
When Kailyn saw Mandy's hand resting on Austin's arm, an unmistakable look of disgust flashed across her face.
Austin stared at Kailyn without blinking. A brief flicker of panic crossed his dim eyes, and he quickly regained his composure and said, "Kailyn, we really are just colleagues. Don't misunderstand."
"Since you're colleagues, why are you lying to me?" Kailyn asked, a careless smile playing on her lips.
Austin sighed lightly. "I was afraid you'd be upset."
Hearing his answer, Kailyn scoffed. She shamelessly scanned Mandy, who was hidden behind Austin.
From Mandy's clothes and demeanor, it was obvious that her family wasn't well off. Mandy appeared timid and shy, but in reality, she was bold. Otherwise, she wouldn't have tried to seduce Kailyn's fiancé.
"Now you're hiding her behind you. Aren't you afraid I'll get angry?" Kailyn asked with a faint smile. "Are you afraid I'll hit her? Or does she not even know you have a fiancée?"
"Ms. Shepherd, I'm sorry," Mandy said cautiously.
She quickly removed her hand from Austin's arm, her voice full of shame. "I accidentally burned myself while making coffee. Austin kindly brought me to the hospital."
"Oh, really?" Kailyn fixed her gaze on Mandy, walking over to stand beside her. She taunted, "Are you his secretary?"
Mandy nodded.
Kailyn raised her head with a meaningful look at Austin, a smile curling on her lips as she asked, "Austin, you didn't mention you hired such a beautiful secretary."
"Kailyn, can we talk about this later, when we get home?" Austin pleaded.
I watched the conversation between the three of them, feeling a mix of emotions.
In the past, when I discovered Austin had lied to me, he would start by explaining that I misunderstood him.If I didn't believe him, he would accuse me of not trusting him.
He said that he only hid the truth because he knew I would doubt him. He always turned the blame on me, even when he was the one who made a mistake.
But now, even though he was protecting Mandy, he still patiently explained things to Kailyn.
Status decided everything. If it were me in Kailyn's place, Austin would have already snapped at me in front of everyone.
After all, with so many people watching, he couldn't just let Kailyn question him like that.
Besides, the relationship between Mandy and Austin really was just that of colleagues. But them being colleagues now didn't guarantee they would remain that way in the future.
It was clear that Austin had an interest in Mandy, which was why he was protecting her. If the two of them had already slept together, Austin would probably have sent Mandy away by now. It was always the things you couldn't have that seemed the most appealing.
But Kailyn wasn't the type to easily listen to Austin. If she had simply happened to see him with another woman, maybe she could choose to ignore it. But the truth was, not only was I present, Abigail was too.
We were all in the same circle, and if word got out about this, Kailyn's reputation would be seriously damaged.
Kailyn already felt wronged about having to marry Austin. She never expected that he would be seeing another woman behind her back. What infuriated her even more wasn't Austin lying to her, but the fact that he was openly protecting Mandy right in front of her.
Kailyn pursed her lips, glanced at Austin, and said, "I can overlook this, but you have to fire her right now."
As soon as Kailyn finished speaking, Mandy froze for a moment. Tears immediately welled up in her eyes, big drops of tears falling down her chin, but she didn't say anything. She just quickly wiped her tears away.
Her performance was impeccable.
Austin glanced at Mandy, slightly furrowing his brows, but suppressed the anger rising in his chest. "Kailyn, Mandy hasn't done anything wrong. It's my fault."
"You know you're at fault?" Kailyn stared at Austin.
Austin nodded.
The sound of a slap echoed through the room. Kailyn had slapped him hard. The sudden slap left Austin stunned, his face turning red.
"Since you know you're wrong, I guess it's only right for me to slap you, isn't it?" Kailyn said, smiling at Austin.
Austin remained silent, his hands hanging by his sides, clenching unconsciously.
I couldn't help but smirk. Maybe Austin had never imagined that one day, in a public place, he would be slapped by a woman and wouldn't even dare to make a sound.
But for me, a simple slap wouldn't quench the anger burning inside me. Since he had caused the death of the child in my womb, this was a debt that would take time to settle.
"Austin, please fire me," Mandy said, lifting her head to look at Austin, her eyes red and filled with pity. "Ms. Shepherd, please don't be angry. It's my fault. I'm sorry. If you want to hit someone, hit me."
Kailyn shot her a cold glance. "Hit you? I'm afraid I'll dirty my hands."
Kailyn looked up at Austin, showing him no mercy whatsoever. Each word came out cold and deliberate. "I never want to see this woman again. If you don't fire her, don't ever show up in front of me again. You actually like something like this? It's embarrassing."
"Austin, I'll quit voluntarily. I'm sorry," Mandy said, wiping her tears as she walked toward the door.
Austin turned and watched Mandy leave, his gaze darkening. The next second, he walked over to Kailyn's side. "Darling, please don't be angry."
