Kailyn casually glanced at Austin, flashing a sweet smile as she lightly touched her face, which had just been slapped. "I'm not the jealous type, really. I understand that it's just a game, but next time, could you at least raise your standards? Otherwise—"
She trailed off as a cold voice interrupted from behind. "Hi, Kailyn."
Hearing her name, Kailyn slowly turned around.
A tall figure stood next to me, dressed in a custom suit, hand-made leather shoes, and wearing an expensive watch. He carried the faint scent of mint and lavender.
Isaac looked as aloof as ever, but when he was around his beloved sister, that was the only time he'd show a genuine smile.
Of course, that smile wasn't for me; it was for Kailyn. He had never truly accepted me.
Unfortunately, Isaac arrived a little too late, missing the earlier dramatic scene. But that was okay. I believe Austin wouldn't just let Kailyn's words control him.
Austin had always been proud and rebellious at his core. The more someone told him not to do something, the more he wanted to try it. These traits were evident in Austin.
Otherwise, he wouldn't have gotten involved with Rosemary, just to seek out some excitement. What was more, the woman who had been crying earlier was exactly Austin's type.
He was willing to defend her in front of Kailyn without worrying about the consequences, which meant Mandy held a certain place in his heart.
All men have a hero complex; when they encounter a vulnerable woman, they often feel a strong desire to protect her.
Austin had always been drawn to fragile, helpless women. Rosemary was that type, and now Mandy was the same.
Austin hadn't fully gotten Mandy yet, so he wouldn't let her go.
Also, today Austin had been humiliated in front of Kailyn. He would definitely look for an opportunity to change the way Mandy saw him and his image.
Kailyn didn't like Austin, but Austin only agreed to marry this spoiled and temperamental young lady because of the power and influence of the Parks family.
He had good looks, a high education, and a decent family background. He was easy-going and sometimes quite considerate, paying attention to small details. But in reality, all of this was just a facade.
People have many sides. Austin appeared obedient and well-behaved in front of his parents, but when dealing with people he didn't like, he showed a completely different face.
Austin despised those living in lower social classes, yet he still showed them pity, acting as if he were a benefactor in their lives, craving the worshipful look they gave him.
But Kailyn couldn't provide him with that kind of emotional value. Anything she didn't offer, Austin would seek out in other women.
From the look in Austin's eyes, I could tell his patience with Kailyn had reached its breaking point.
"Austin, what are you doing here?" Isaac asked, noticing something was off, his voice laced with confusion.
I hadn't expected Kailyn to say nothing about what had just happened, instead casually linking her arm through Austin's. Austin seemed surprised, momentarily frozen in place.
I couldn't help but admire Kailyn's ability to handle men; it was truly impressive. She slapped him, then offered him a sweet reward.
But I understood. Kailyn probably hated having Austin standing next to her, but at this moment, she knew she couldn't just make him leave. Maddox wouldn't agree, and neither would Melody.
After all, no one would want to marry a woman who couldn't have children. Wealthy families especially wouldn't approve.
This meant that even if Kailyn caught Austin in bed with another woman, she would have no choice but to swallow her anger.
Austin led the group to Alex's hospital room.
"Laurel, aren't we leaving?" Sophina seemed to snap back to reality when she noticed the others walking away.
"You all go ahead, I'll just be a minute in the restroom," I said.
Sophina shook her head. "We'll wait here for you."
I hesitated for a moment. "Alright, then. You and Zachary find a place to sit for a while."
After speaking, I turned and followed the signs to the restroom.
At that moment, there was a "Do Not Use" sign posted in front of the restroom on the first floor. I ignored it and walked right in.
In front of the sink, the woman who had been crying earlier and had red-rimmed eyes was touching up her makeup. Mandy turned slowly when she saw me walk in and flashed me a smile.
"Ms. Bardot, your acting skills are really impressive," I said.
Mandy's lips curled into a sly smile. "If I didn't have the ability, how would I have the guts to take on this job?"
She paused for a moment and then spoke casually. "What should I do next? Should I resign? What if the fish doesn't bite? I don't want my efforts to be in vain."
"After all the bait you've put out, how could the fish not bite?" I pursed my cracked lips. "The game is just beginning."
"I got it. Wait for my good news," Mandy winked at me before turning around and walking out of the restroom.
Mandy was someone I hired from the dark web. We had actually known each other for three years. Though we had never met in person, we had shared many secrets with each other over time.
Initially, I had just posted an ad online, looking for someone to stay close to Austin. Unexpectedly, Avery Bardot, who happened to be short on cash at the time, volunteered.
At first, I had some reservations. After all, Austin had high standards, and an average woman wouldn't necessarily catch his eye.
When I saw Mandy, all my doubts vanished. Not only was she beautiful, but she also exuded the exact aura I was looking for.
Sure enough, the moment Austin laid eyes on Mandy, he was taken with her. But the best things were often the ones one couldn't have.
Their first meeting was actually when Mandy intentionally bumped into Austin while he was looking at his phone.
Austin thought he'd take her shopping, but Mandy naturally declined, simply saying "It's okay" before quickly leaving.
The next day, Mandy appeared before Austin again.
Mandy had originally applied for a position in the finance department, but Austin immediately assigned her to be his assistant. To put it simply, he wanted to create opportunities for himself.
Austin didn't know that Mandy was just the first step in my plan to get close to him. If Austin and Bailee hadn't teamed up to cause the loss of my child, I would not have started targeting him so soon.
I pulled a business card from my pocket, and I couldn't help but recall that striking face. He appeared gentle, but there was something cold and distant about him. "Yaeger, what exactly are you trying to do?" I murmured.
