When I stepped out of the bathroom, I immediately saw Leah standing in the lobby, and beside her was a familiar face, Samantha, the daughter of Harvey Group.
Clearly, they were here to visit Alex. Alex was already married, and his legs were crippled. I hadn't expected Samantha to still have feelings for him. Or perhaps Samantha was here to watch him fall.
But then again, given her upbringing, I didn't think Samantha would be so vile. Still, thinking about it, it made sense. After all, just because someone came from a prestigious family and had a good education didn't mean they had good character.
I remembered how, back then, Samantha had tried to prove Alex's importance in her life by accusing me of pushing her down the stairs and using Abigail to try to ruin my appearance. Samantha had returned, and her intentions were not friendly.
In the past, I refrained from offending her because she was the daughter of Harvey Group. But now, things were different.
As soon as Zachary saw me, he rushed over but accidentally bumped into Samantha.
Samantha furrowed her brows slightly, and Leah, standing next to her, shoved Zachary away.
Zachary fell to the ground. He didn't cry, but was clearly frightened, sitting there in a daze.
I hadn't expected Leah to be so ruthless.
Just as I was struggling to hold back my anger and prepare to step forward, I saw a figure in white move ahead of me and help Zachary up from the floor.
"Are you okay?" The voice was soft, but carried a hint of gentleness.
When the man looked up, I saw a familiar face.
I knew I should keep my cool. Now was not the time to confront Leah.
At that moment, Leah, seeing the doctor in a white coat, didn't seem embarrassed at all. Instead, she glared at Zachary and scolded him, "Are you blind? This is a hospital. Can't you behave yourself?"
"Running around in the lobby is wrong, but he didn't intentionally bump into you," Lucas said slowly, looking up at Leah. "And your friend didn't get hurt, but you pushed this little boy down."
"Yeah, I did it on purpose. What are you going to do about it?" Leah sneered, her tone slow and mocking. "Does he have anything to do with you?"
Sophina rushed to Zachary's side, seeing his tear-filled eyes. The next second, she glared at Leah, furious. "Miss Herrera, how could you lay hands on a child?"
It was clear Sophina was genuinely angry, otherwise, she wouldn't have dared to stand up to Leah.
Leah's smile faltered, and she snorted. "Who do you think you are, to lecture me? Is this kid yours?"
I furrowed my brows. Leah had seen Zachary before, but she didn't know his identity.
Of course, even if she knew Zachary was Maddox's son, she probably wouldn't care. She likely wouldn't hesitate to say something even worse.
Samantha noticed the growing attention on her and casually tugged at Leah's hand. "Leah, it's fine. The kid is just lively and playful. Little boy, next time don't run around. This is a hospital, and you could hurt a patient."
Samantha's hypocritical words made me feel nauseous. Zachary certainly shouldn't have been running around in the lobby, but when Leah pushed him, Samantha didn't try to stop her.
It was only when a doctor stepped in, and many eyes turned toward her, that Samantha started pretending to be gentle and considerate. What a fake woman.
"If he apologizes, we'll forget about it," Leah said, staring at Zachary.
Zachary pouted a little, clearly aggrieved. "You pushed me. You should apologize too."
Zachary didn't seem the slightest bit afraid of Leah, even though tears still clung to his long lashes.
"Do you know who I am? You think I should apologize to you?" Leah shot Zachary a cold, sideways glance.
Sophina quickly stepped in front of him to protect him.
"If no one's teaching him manners, then I'll teach him myself," Leah said, staring directly at Sophina with icy eyes.
"Teaching him manners means using your hands?" I stepped forward to stand directly in front of Leah, and she instinctively took a step back.
"Laurel," Zachary said, walking to my side. He looked up at me, his face filled with grievance.
The moment Samantha realized Zachary knew me, her eyes flickered slightly as if she was trying to figure out his identity.
"Miss Parks, who is this child to you?" Samantha asked, her lips curling into a smile, though there was something significant in her tone.
I slowly lifted my head to meet her bright gaze, a faint smile tugging at the corners of my mouth. "He's my half-brother."
Leah's face stiffened slightly, clearly not expecting me to bring Maddox's illegitimate son with me.
She snorted and glanced at Zachary, her tone cold and indifferent. "I think this kid will only bring you bad luck. If you hadn't brought him along, you wouldn't have lost your baby. Actually, I think you're the one bringing the Herrera family bad luck.
"Ever since you married Alex, it's been nothing but trouble." With that, Leah turned on her heel, storming toward the elevator.
Samantha's expression faltered with awkwardness, and she quickly followed after her.
Lucas looked up at me, as though he wanted to say something but stopped himself. I gave a faint smile and softly reassured him. "I'm fine."
Sophina, standing beside me, was clearly upset on my behalf. "Laurel, don't let her get to you."
I shook my head, crouching down to take Zachary's hand in mine.
"Laurel, is the baby in your belly gone because of me?" Zachary asked.
"Of course not. That woman was just talking nonsense," I replied, pulling a wet wipe from my bag to clean his little hands.
Zachary lowered his head, looking a little upset. He spoke quietly, "Laurel, Isaac and Kailyn saw me earlier. They didn't even say hi to me. Is it because I'm not good, and they don't like me?"
I was momentarily taken aback. I hadn't realized Zachary's feelings were so sensitive.
Kailyn had always been somewhat distant with Zachary, and Isaac's feelings for this suddenly appearing brother were neither particularly positive nor negative. But it was understandable.
No one liked someone who appeared out of nowhere to claim a share of the family fortune. If I were in their shoes, I wouldn't like it either.
"Of course not. I really like you, Zachary," I said.
"Yes, I like you too, Laurel," Zachary said, nodding seriously, gripping my hand tightly.
At that moment, my phone in my pocket vibrated. I glanced at the caller ID; it was a call from Jayden.
A chill ran through me. I instinctively looked around, but there was no sign of him. Silently, I put the phone back into my pocket.
