Alex pinched my face and smiled. "What do you want to know? I can tell you everything."
I asked, "Is there really a way for Bailee to treat your leg? Is there something between the two of you hiding from me?"
"She did save my life, but there's nothing between us."
I looked up and met his gaze. Those black eyes sparkled, and they were filled with gentle amusement. It was as if I would fall into it with just a glance.
"You don't trust me?" Seeing that I was silent, his expression suddenly changed.
I said, "I believe that if you really had something going on, she wouldn't have drugged you."
"It's good that you know." Alex smiled. Her cold face was filled with charm when he smiled.
He would always try to seduce me from time to time.
I said, "I'll go back to the office first."
"Okay." He let go of my hand.
The moment I walked to the door and closed it, I let out a long sigh, feeling inexplicably flustered.
Alex answered only one of my questions. He chose to avoid answering the second one.
I wondered if Bailee could atually cure his legs. I also wondered why he didn't he agree.
I laughed at myself and suddenly heard a familiar male voice behind me. "Laurel."
Turning around, I saw a young man in a white coat. He had a handsome face, but his entire body exuded a sharp aura. For a moment, there was a sense of oppression.
I was stunned for a moment and wondered if it was an illusion.
Lucas Bowen walked in front of me. A trace of hesitation flashed across his black eyes. He looked at me carefully and asked, "Do you have time for a cup of coffee?"
"Is it possible for his leg to recover?" I took Lucas's coffee and couldn't help but ask.
He was silent for a long moment before he spoke. "He didn't tell you?"
"I don't seem to be much of a wife." I gave a bitter laugh. The atmosphere froze for a moment.
"Laurel, why did you choose to marry him back then?" Lucas's gaze landed on me, his eyes filled with confusion and curiosity.
I retracted my thoughts and looked up at Lucas. The corners of my lips curled up. "Everyone in the class group said that I married Alex to take revenge on Austin and for the Herrera family's money."
"If you really loved money, you wouldn't have chosen Austin in the first place." Hearing Lucas's words, I couldn't help but feel a little surprised.
I reached out and patted his shoulder. I couldn't help but sigh. "You know me well."
"You married Alex because of your mother's illness, right?"
"Yes." I sighed softly and turned to look at Lucas. I said truthfully, "In the six years I've been dating Austin, I've actually been hoping for him to propose to me, but later on, I realized that he actually didn't love me that much. But I was lying to myself and wasn't willing to accept reality.
"Later on, when I was disappointed enough, I felt that I didn't really like Austin. Perhaps the reason why I kept being with him was because I didn't want to admit that I had a bad taste."
Thinking back to the past, it was as if it was a dream. But I'm glad I didn't keep making mistakes.
"Then why did you choose Alex?" Lucas looked at me in confusion.
I took a sip of coffee and the image of Alex's handsome face appeared in my mind.
I thought about the chance encounter on the plane and how he had inexplicably become my blind date. It was as if everything was predestined.
Actually, I had seen Alex before, but I had only glanced at him from afar.
Although it was just a glance, I was still stunned by his appearance.
However, I did not expect to meet him again after breaking up with Austin.
Moreover, during my time with Austin, I often heard him mention Alex.
Before meeting him, I had always thought that his age might not be much different from Austin's father. So I assumed that he should be an old-fashioned and serious middle-aged man.
However, after meeting him, I realized that he was completely different from the person I had imagined.
"Of course it's because he's good-looking and rich." I smiled.
Lucas glanced at me in disdain and said in a deep voice, "I didn't expect you to like beautiful men."
"Beautiful?" I frowned, then nodded. Indeed, Alex's appearance could be described with this word.
"Actually, it's just a coincidence." I chuckled and stared at Lucas. I asked in a low voice, "It's possible that the injury on his foot can be healed, right?"
"That's right. We need a special medicine. However, ordinary hospitals don't have this medicine. It can only be obtained through special channels."
Hearing Lucas's answer, I seemed to understand why Bailee said that only she could cure Alex. This statement was not fake.
Lucas saw that I didn't say anything and continued, "Of course, even with special medicine, there might not be a 100% chance of healing."
"What's 100% in medicine?" I couldn't help but sneer. "Even if there's only a 50% chance, he shouldn't give up."
"Laurel, actually, I've always thought that your marriage with Alex was just a mutually beneficial relationship until he risked his life to save you. Now, even if he can't stand up, he's unwilling to accept the Foster family's conditions. This means that you didn't choose the wrong person. He really cares about you."
I frowned slightly and looked at Lucas. I said in a low voice, "The Foster family's condition is for Alex to divorce me and marry Bailee?"
"But he refused."
I frowned, wondering why Alex hadn't agreed to Bailee's request.
"He's a little silly." I sighed softly. My heart was heavy, as if something had blocked it.
Lucas shook his head and pondered for a moment. "He's willing to sacrifice his life for you. Why would he care about his leg?"
I looked up in realization and met his bright and clean eyes. I couldn't help but stiffen.
If Alex could never stand up, it was equivalent of taking his life away.
"Is there no other way?" I looked up at Lucas, not knowing what to do.
Lucas shook his head and looked at me casually. "Don't even think about divorcing him. Maybe he has his concerns."
"If I don't divorce him, he won't be able to stand up for the rest of his life."
But I also knew that even if I asked Alex for a divorce, as long as he didn't agree, the divorce wouldn't happen.
I pondered for a while and finished the last mouthful of coffee. "I have to go back. It's getting late."
Lucas looked at me. "Alex should love you more than I thought."
However, I didn't want to see him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
After all, he had always been high and mighty, and he could not tolerate being looked down upon by others.
I asked, "Is there really a way for Bailee to treat your leg? Is there something between the two of you hiding from me?"
"She did save my life, but there's nothing between us."
