According to the information from Marvin, the people working on Wilhelm's case were outstanding.
They were carefully selected by the higher-ups to crack the case as soon as possible.
However, there came another case before Wilhelm's was cracked.
The investigation reached a dead end.
If there were rats in the investigation team, it meant the boss behind the scenes had helpers in the higher-ups.
In other words, we would ask for trouble if we tried to find out the rats now.
We were at a disadvantage because our enemy was hiding in the shadows.
"You're right. It is difficult to find the rats." I softly sighed, disappointed and helpless.
"Forget it. Let's have lunch first." Marvin patted my shoulder and comforted me in a gentle voice.
I paid special attention to this case among so many unsolved ones because it was related to the truth about my mom's death.
Besides, I had a vague feeling that this one was profound.
After lunch, I received a call from Penny as expected.
She invited me to her place.
Frowning, Marvin looked vigilant. "Aren't you afraid that she will set you up?"
I raised my head, shot Marvin one glance, and said sarcastically, "To accuse me of molesting her?"
"I'll go with you," Marvin said.
Recalling what he had just said, I nodded.
"Keep your mouth shut, and I will do the talking."
"Fine. I am afraid that you will fall into her trap."
"Didn't you?"
Marvin opened his mouth but made no sound.
Penny looked a bit nervous when she opened the door. She quickly closed the door and locked it after we went into her apartment.
Marvin and I exchanged one glance with each other. We were confused by Penny's caution and fear.
Had Penny already gotten backlashed?
"Relax. Your employer won't hurt you for the time being."
Penny shook her head and said in a low voice, "You don't understand."
"Who told you to slander me?" Marvin stared at Penny sullenly.
Penny was taken aback. "I will tell you the truth as long as you give me 300 thousand dollars."
Marvin was stunned. "Are you out of your mind? Do you know that you're extorting money from a police officer?"
"Give me 300 thousand dollars, and I'll drop the case immediately." Penny's voice was trembling.
Marvin wanted to argue, but I stopped him with a warning look.
"You will get the money as long as your information is helpful." I narrowed my eyes slightly. "I came to help you because all the evidence you provided is fake. We can prove that by reconstructing the scene of the crime."
Penny had shock and panic on her fair face.
"Answer my question."
Penny pursed her lips and clenched her fists.
"I don't know who my employer is. I got a text message that I would get 15 thousand dollars as long as I slandered you as told."
Penny slowly raised her head, cautiously looked at Marvin, and added, "I don't want to go to jail or die."
"Anything else?" I asked, looking her up and down.
She shook her head. "That's all I know."
I sneered. "What you said is useless."
"I can drop the case." With indignation, Penny looked me in the eye. "I've told you everything I know."
Amused, I chuckled.
"Listen, as long as you drop the case, we will forgive you, and you won't die."
"Without money, my life is pointless," Penny grumbled.
"You can earn money only when you're alive." I smiled. "I'll buy your account with 3,000 dollars."
Penny frowned. "Why? That person won't contact me anymore."
"Just tell me if you will sell me your account or not."
Penny pondered for a moment before she nodded.
I paid Penny and then left with Marvin.
As agreed, Penny dropped the case with an excuse that her false accusation resulted from her ardent love for Marvin and his blunt refusal.
"Laurel, it is your trick, isn't it? You deliberately misled my colleagues." Marvin looked displeased.
"Find yourself a girlfriend, and the problem will be solved," I drawled.
"Don't you feel that Penny is weird?" Marvin asked in a low voice.
I had the same feeling as Marvin.
Penny seemed scared but couldn't shared her fear with us.
"Does she have no family?"
"Her parents were divorced, and she dropped out."
"Nobody cares about her. How does she fend for herself?" I felt puzzled.
Marvin shook his head.
Even the grownups felt it difficult to fend for themselves, let alone an 18-year-old girl.
Perhaps, that was why Penny had been chosen.
"Keep an eye on her."
"You don't have to tell me."
I looked at Marvin and found his gaze evasive.
"When will you get back to work?"
"I'm still in danger," Marvin responded.
I glanced at him. Was he afraid that I would drive him away?
"Take me to the hospital." I changed the subject.
Marvin looked up at the sky and then asked hesitantly, "To visit your cheap husband?"
I pouted while wondering why Alex became cheap in the eye of Marvin.
Alex was not cheap at all.
Marvin drove me to the hospital and then waited for me in the car.
I knew that he was worried about me.
Nifelheim City was eventful recently. Ever since the murder, few people roamed around at night.
This trip to the hospital was to tell Alex that I would find a way to cure his leg.
Yaeger might not help me, but I would find a way to cure Alex anyway.
This thought helped improve my mood.
At the doorway of Alex's ward, I heard laughter coming from inside and was stunned.
I stopped pushing the door open. Through the crack, I saw Alex sitting on the bed with a woman beside him.
The woman was beautiful with fair skin, and her fine clothes looked expensive.
Bitterness got me.
Ever since Alex was injured, I had never seen his bright smile like this.
"Laurel, what are you doing here? Go inside." Kailyn smiled at me.
