I expressionlessly stared at Marvin and slightly frowned. "You know Betty, don't you?"
"Yep," Speaking, Marvin walked straight into the elevator.
"Why do you know that?" Marvin had confusion on his face. "I don't think that I've ever mentioned her to you."
He narrowed his eyes and stared at me for an answer to his question.
I met his gaze, leaned against the elevator, and asked with a smile, "Your ex-girlfriend?"
"No," Marvin responded. His answer was so curt that he seemed anxious to cut ties with Betty.
I couldn't help but sneer. "You seem close with her. Is she your crush?"
Marvin glared at me with contempt and said shamelessly, "I might not be interested in her even if she were in me."
How conceited!
Unruly, Marvin didn't look like the rich at all.
"Why do you know that? Did Angela tell you that?"
He pouted and denied his guess with sadness before I answered him. "No, it was impossible for her to talk about me with you."
"Did Angela also know Betty?" I was stunned by this information. Soon, I sensed my overreaction. Both Angela and Betty were in the same circle, so it was reasonable for them to know each other.
"Yes, she did." Speaking, Marvin took a cigarette out of his pocket, hesitated, and put it away while his gaze was fixed on me.
"You overheard the conversation in the ward and refused to go inside. The only explanation is that you didn't want to see someone in the room, and there was Betty." Interested, I smiled. "You didn't want to see Betty because there are personal grudges between you two, or you like her."
"Why didn't you think I didn't want to see your husband?" Marvin argued. After a soft sigh, he said, "Well, the Wright family was rich. The Wright family was on intimate terms with the Woods family, and there was an engagement between them."
I frowned. "About you and Betty?"
"No, about my mom and Betty's father, Jim Woods." Marvin sneered and then continued, "The Wright family was on the verge of bankruptcy because their ventures failed. Then, the engagement was broken off."
How fragile the relationship between the rich families was!
I now understood why Yvonne had taken a fancy to Angela's father, Michael.
Michael became a highflier with the support of the Lakes family.
He still spoiled Jamilah and indulged her every whim after he got rich.
He wasn't perfect, but Yvonne found that the man she had looked down upon had conscience and compassion. Gradually, she was attracted.
Her choice was understandable but unforgivable.
It was true that she had her misfortune, but she shouldn't ruined Jamilah's happiness.
Besides, Michael wasn't such a good man as Yvonne thought. If he were, he wouldn't have cheated on his wife.
"It is between the elders."
"Jim kept pestering my mom after he got married." Marvin sneered. "He claimed that he was forced to break off his engagement with my mom and that my mom was his only love."
"Wasn't he insane?" I couldn't help but curse. "Didn't he know that your mom was with Michael?"
Marvin shook his head. "Jim's wife mistook my mom for the home wrecker. She took her daughter to my home and made a scene, so the affair between my mom and Michael got exposed."
This mess infuriated me. Marvin sounded calm and peaceful in his narration, and I finally understood why he had been gloomy, taciturn, and alone in his childhood.
The little Marvin wouldn't fight back or shed tears when he was bullied.
"I don't need that sympathy on your face." Marvin glanced at me and said in a deep voice, "In comparison, my childhood wasn't that awful."
He stopped in his tracks.
"Laurel, there's something I didn't tell you."
Marvin sounded a bit grim, and his expression was stern. Instantly, panic got me. Would Marvin confess his feelings to me the next second?
I was aware that Alex didn't love me.
He didn't care about me, even if he had taken a bullet for me.
Perhaps he cared about me, but he didn't love me anyway.
He might send me a tail if he learned that Marvin was interested in me.
Few men wanted to become cuckolds, even if they liked to brag about their infidelity.
"Keep it to yourself if it is not important," I interrupted Marvin.
Marvin turned a deaf ear to my request. He looked at me and said in a deep voice, "I don't think there will be another chance for me to mention it."
My heart skipped a beat, and I became perplexed.
I began to think about how to reject Marvin without hurting his feelings.
"Do you remember the summer when I visited my grandfather?"
Surprised, I asked with confusion, "Yes?"
Marvin let out a long sigh. "I accidentally ran into one backyard and saw two people in the garden, one standing while the other kneeling."
I frowned. This prologue didn't sound like the beginning of a confession.
I secretly heaved a sigh of relief and looked at Marvin with confusion.
"That man seemed to be in his forties, and the child kneeling on the ground was about ten years old." Marvin took out a cigarette, lit it, and took a drag.
"The man in a black night robe had anger on his face. With a large whip, he lashed the child again and again."
My heart sank, and a chill ran down my spine.
"It was Summer, and the child wore a thin white shirt. Most of the white shirt became red after a few lashes, but the child didn't make a sound. The middle-aged man kept lashing till the child lay on his stomach."
Marvin put out the cigarette in his hand and suddenly looked at me. "Laurel, do you know whom I am talking about?"
