It took me quite a while to see the light. Recalling what Marvin had said, I suddenly felt that my heart was pierced, and the sharp pain spread from my heart to my limbs.
Marvin's last question implied that I knew that boy.
At the memory of the scars on Alex's back, I couldn't help but gasp with shock.
I had mistaken Lena for the culprit because Alex wasn't her biological child.
In my opinion, Lena was too proud to allow an illegitimate child to call her mom.
She was reminded of her husband's infidelity whenever she saw Alex. As a result, her dislike towards Alex was understandable.
To my surprise, Raphael turned out to be the culprit.
Raphael was said to be strict with his children and favored his youngest one, Alex.
Rumor had it that Raphael spoiled Alex because he was an old dad to his little boy.
People said that Raphael had spared no effort to rescue his son after Alex was kidnapped.
It was said that he had sworn to bring the kidnappers to justice.
In short, Raphael was said to dote on his youngest son.
He made Alex the head of the Herrera Group after his little boy grew up.
The other members of the Herrera family dreaded Alex for his ability and the partiality from Raphael.
Even Austin had complained to me that his grandpa favored Alex very much.
The family gatherings wouldn't begin till Alex arrived.
Raphael wouldn't agree to any proposals till Alex nodded his approval.
Because of Alex's persistence, he accepted me as his daughter-in-law even if I wasn't the ideal candidate to him.
It was true that he was partial to Alex.
Sensing that I got the answer, Marvin slightly knitted his eyebrows, and his tone began to contain anger and confusion.
"Isn't it said that Raphael spoils his little son? Why was he so brutal to Alex? Is he a freak?"
I slowly looked up at Marvin and asked with a long face, "Why didn't you call the police?"
"Are you kidding me? You should feel glad that I can stand here, alive." Marvin took a deep breath. After a while, he mumbled, "Because of that bloody scene, I fell sick. When I mustered my courage to break the bad news to my family, they said that I had a nightmare. None of them believed me."
"Even if they did, they could do nothing." I sighed and walked towards the door.
Marvin followed behind me. "You knew that he had been beaten?"
"I saw the scars on his back." I sighed. "I didn't know that they were left by his father."
"I see. Why did Raphael beat him? What if he didn't survive that beating?"
"He would. The Herrera family has their family doctors," I explained. "He wouldn't die anyway."
Marvin looked at me with confusion. He pursed his lips and then lowered his voice. "Is he not Raphael's son?"
I sneered.
Given what Raphael had done to Alex, Marvin had a good reason to think so.
"No way!" Marvin hesitated for a moment. "Why did Raphael make him the heir? Did Raphael do so on purpose? Used him as a shield?"
"Alex is Raphael's biological son."
Marvin stared at me with his eyebrows knitted. He asked in a low voice, "Are you sure?"
"I am sure," I say firmly.
Marvin thought for a moment before he said in a deep voice, "Raphael is a freak!"
I gave him a glance and then nodded in agreement.
Why had Raphael abused Alex? It confused me.
Because of Alex's mother?
To protect Alex from Lena who wanted to kill him?
No, it didn't make sense that Raphael dreaded Lena.
The only explanation was that Raphael was a freak as Marvin had said.
Marvin and I got into the car and returned to Honeydew Estate. Night fell.
Fortunately, Marvin didn't ask about the Herrera family on the way home.
To be honest, I knew little about that family.
We got out of the car. Several women in fine clothes had curiosity in their eyes when they saw Marvin.
"Is there something on my face?" Marvin frowned.
I sighed. "Have a good sleep. People will be scared if you roam about at night."
Marvin could not help but yawn while pressing the elevator button.
I didn't walk out of the elevator when it reached its destination. Marvin glanced at me. Before he raised a question, I explained, "I will go see a friend. See you later."
Marvin nodded and asked no questions.
I took a deep breath as I watched him leave.
I didn't call Yaeger in advance. He refused to reply to my message after I missed my last appointment with him.
Was he mad at me?
Was he so petty?
When the door of the elevator opened, I saw an empty corridor. Looking at the lights, I couldn't help but think the electricity bill must be high.
I took a deep breath before I rang the doorbell.
The doorbell rang for quite a long time, and nobody answered the door.
If Yaeger was away, his servants were supposed to be at home.
It seemed he didn't want to see me. He must be mad at me, so he didn't want to see me yet. When I intended to leave, the door was slowly opened.
"Miss Parks?"
A middle-aged man in a black suit appeared at the doorway, and he had a polite smile on his face. His voice was soft as if he were afraid of disturbing others.
"I'm here to meet Mr. Duesler."
Affected, my tone became soft and slow.
The man said gently, "He is sleeping. I am afraid that you will have to wait, Miss Parks."
I was stunned. This explanation sounded more like an excuse though it was getting dark outside.
To cure Alex as soon as possible, I didn't leave as I was supposed to. "Okay."
The man led me into the room and then closed the door.
"Mr. Duesler doesn't sleep well, but he's been sleepy lately. Miss Parks, please take a seat."
