My heart tightened at the news. Then, I asked, "How long has his case lasted?"
The middle-aged man thought for a moment before he said, "Two to three days."
Hearing this, I stopped in my tracks. I couldn't help but think of the poison that Marvin had mentioned.
Its victims would become sleepy at first and die from palpitations in the end.
Even the medical examiners couldn't find the real reason for their death.
I wasn't sure whether Yaeger was poisoned, but there came my chance.
The information about that poison became my bargaining chip.
Even so, I didn't have the confidence to get what I wanted via this negotiation.
Yaeger lived in a place full of surveillance cameras, so how could he get poisoned?
I calmly nodded at the middle-aged man.
My question didn't surprise or alert him as if it was part of the small talk.
Yaeger lived in a neat and clean penthouse. It looked spacious because there weren't many ornaments.
The floor was spotless, and so was the French window in the living room.
Standing by the French window, one could overlook the whole city.
Whoever was afraid of heights would have a chill down his spine.
It was quiet in the room, and I didn't hear any noise from outside.
This room must be soundproof.
At that moment, I believed that the middle-aged man didn't lie about Yaeger's sleep disorder.
Quietness could help Yaeger sleep.
Then, it occurred to me that Yaeger had fallen asleep at his desk at school.
Why did he have a sleep disorder? Since when?
My eyes swept around the room, and I saw nobody but the middle-aged man.
"When Mr. Duesler wants a rest, all the servants will be dispersed." The middle-aged man lowered his voice. "Miss Parks, please wait here."
I nodded and said nothing. I kept as quiet as I could.
The middle-aged man brought me a cup of coffee. He kept a polite smile on his face.
The long wait began. When I began to doze off, there came a sound from the stairs behind me. I turned my head and saw Yaeger in the white bathrobe slowly walking downstairs.
Surprise flitted across his eyes when he saw me. "What are you doing here?"
Before I opened my mouth, he looked at the middle-aged man with a frown. "Dalton Stewart, why didn't you tell me of her arrival?"
I quickly rose to my feet. "I asked him not to disturb you."
Yaeger was stunned. A smile appeared on his handsome face. He turned to Dalton and instructed, "Tell me when Miss Parks comes again."
Dalton nodded respectfully and then left the living room.
Yaeger walked up to me, glanced at me, and gestured for me to sit down.
Then, he sat beside me and asked casually, "What happened?"
He drawled as if he were sleepy, and his voice sounded deep and sexy. Together with his handsome face, I couldn't help but suspect that he tried to seduce me.
"Is Grace Foster your aunt?"
Yaeger had a flash of surprise in his bright eyes. Then, he nodded with a smile. "Do you want a favor from my uncle?"
I took a deep breath. After a moment of silence, I said in a low voice, "I need your help, and it may offend your uncle."
"If so, why do you think that I'll help you?" Yaeger's gaze was fixed on me. With a faint smile, Yaeger said, "My aunt will be unhappy if I offend my uncle."
I looked Yaeger in the eye. I had thought of his refusal, but I was determined to get his help.
He was my only hope.
I could not watch Alex die.
As time ticked by, his wound would alert his family sooner or later.
Besides, there was Bailee.
If Alex said no to her condition, she would share his secrets with Leah for sure.
"I will do whatever you want me to." After a deep breath, I added, "I won't break the law."
Hearing this, Yaeger chuckled. He then said in a low voice, "It seems I am not a good person in your eye."
"Define a good person."
"Are you a good person?" Yaeger slightly narrowed his eyes and leaned back with one hand on the cushion.
"No," I replied without hesitation.
Yaeger turned his head and sighed. "Whatever? Are you sure?"
I nodded.
Yaeger suddenly sat upright and placed a hand on my shoulder. Word by word, he asked, "No regret?"
I dodged his burning gaze. "No."
"Then stay here tonight."
In the room, only a dim light was on. I gazed at Yaeger, who was right by my side, smelled good because of the shower gel, and had his chest exposed.
I took a deep breath, and my mind went blank. Thanks to my lingering reason, I frowned and said, "I will do anything for you, but I won't sell myself. I am married."
Then, silence fell. When I was perplexed, there came Yaeger's laughter.
"Laurel, I just want you to dine with me tonight."
"Did you just agree to help me?" I looked up at Yaeger, relieved.
He retracted his hand from my shoulder and looked a bit sad. "Do you mean you won't dine with me if I say no?"
"No." I frowned slightly. "I need some medicine to cure a wounded leg. Mr. Foster can get that, soI think you can too. Help me, please. I won't say no when you need my help."
Yaeger silently gazed at me for a long time before he said, "You want me to be the bad person who will ruin my cousin's plan of marrying into a rich family, don't you?"
