I clenched my fists tightly, staring at Yaeger in silence before saying in a low, determined voice, "Alex will never marry her."
He raised an eyebrow, his gaze lingering on me with an inscrutable expression, but he didn't say a word.
I tightened my grip, realizing that Yaeger was well aware of Alex's condition. When I mentioned Grace's name, he didn't seem surprised at all. In fact, he seemed to understand exactly what I was getting at. "I don't suppose you want Harold to let Bailee marry into the Herrera family, do you?" I asked.
Yaeger's brow furrowed, and he shifted his gaze away from me, offering a smile as he casually replied, "Who told you that? I actually hope you'll divorce Alex."
His words hit me like a thunderclap. For a moment, I was stunned, unable to hide my baffled expression. With a hint of a laugh, I asked, "You want to see me unhappy?"
"Not at all." Yaeger sighed lightly, then poured himself a cup of coffee, taking a slow sip. "I just think you won't be happy with him."
Happy? I froze for a moment, the corner of my lips twitching into a self-deprecating smile. "Being married to Alex is happiness for me. If I could heal his legs, that would make me happy too."
For me, happiness wasn't something extravagant.
Because only those who live at the bottom can truly understand that sometimes, just being alive is a form of happiness.
But those who already have everything often can't feel that so-called happiness.
They really don't know how good they have it.
"Is this really what you consider happiness?" Yaeger eyed me suspiciously, his lips curling into a sarcastic smile. "Then tell me, are you happy? Since marrying Alex, has your life been happy?"
I didn't understand why Yaeger was asking me this, because to me, happiness and being happy weren't the same thing.
"Can't answer that? That means you haven't been happy at all. So why would you think marrying Alex is such a happy thing?" Yaeger's smile was both mocking and inquisitive.
I replied, "Because Alex married me, my mother was able to rest easy when she passed. For me, that was happiness. And I want him to stand again. Seeing him stand, I will be happy, because that's something I owe him."
Yaeger's eyes sharpened as he stared at me, and then he chuckled softly. "So happiness can be this simple?"
I shrugged, a playful smile on my face. "You're the one who overcomplicates happiness."
Yaeger looked at me with a knowing gaze, his silence lingering before he lowered his eyelids and spoke softly, "Alright, I'll help you."
"Really?" I hadn't expected Yaeger to agree to my request, and a wave of excitement surged in me as I asked, "What do you want me to do?"
Yaeger met my eyes for a moment before looking away. He slowly stood up, and just as he was about to speak, the doorbell rang.
"Dalton, go open the door. See who it is." Yaeger's voice carried a hint of impatience, even a bit of annoyance.
It seemed this guy wasn't as easygoing as he appeared.
But then again, it wasn't surprising. Back in school, he had seemed kind and approachable, yet every time the senior girls came to confess to him, holding their letters and gifts, he had given them a look that said he couldn't be bothered.
Not a single word would escape his lips. That had broken many hearts back then.
But even so, he always wore a kind smile and was polite to those around him.
A moment later, Dalton came in, carefully saying, "Sir, Miss Woods is here."
"Miss Woods?" Yaeger's eyes narrowed, and he looked up at Dalton.
"Betty," Dalton replied.
At that moment, everything inside me seemed to freeze. I hadn't expected Betty to show up here, and from the looks of it, her relationship with Yaeger was far from ordinary.
"You know her?" Yaeger smiled at me, his tone almost teasing.
In the quiet living room, Yaeger's voice seemed to echo.
I nodded, lowering my voice as I said, "I met her at the hospital today. She's Alex's classmate."
Although curiosity about Betty's sudden appearance bubbled up in my mind, there was an overwhelming sense of unease. After all, as a married woman showing up late at a single man's place, it was bound to stir some wild imaginations.
One Marvin was already enough to keep me on edge. If Alex found out about any other men, he'd probably have someone tailing me, making it even harder to go out alone in the future. It would be exhausting.
"Are you scared?" Yaeger chuckled softly, then turned to Dalton, saying, "Take Miss Woods to the office to wait."
Dalton nodded and quickly left the room.
I let out a long breath, then couldn't help but ask, "Are you really close with Betty?"
"Well, not really. Just schoolmates," Yaeger replied casually.
"Then you know Alex too?" I furrowed my brow, thinking they were both rich, so they must be in the same circle. I hadn't expected them to be schoolmates as well.
"Yeah." Yaeger's lips curved into a playful smile. He raised an eyebrow. "Are you that scared? Is our relationship really so unpresentable?"
"You still haven't told me your conditions." I quickly shifted the topic.
"No rush, I'll tell you when I think of something," Yaeger replied with a smile, then looked at me and said, "I need to change clothes. Looks like I won't have time to have dinner with you tonight."
"I'll leave then." I quickly stood up and made my way to the door.
I glanced at the surveillance camera by the door. When I saw no one outside, I hurriedly opened the door and made my way toward the elevator.
I didn't want to run into Betty, nor did I want her to see me.
Only when the elevator doors closed behind me did I finally breathe a sigh of relief.
When I opened the door to my apartment, I saw Zachary running toward me with his short little legs, his face flushed with excitement.
"Laurel!" Zachary's little face was all red, and he called out anxiously.
The little guy had a hard time speaking when he got too excited.
I crouched down, gently ruffling his hair, and asked softly, "What's wrong? Did someone bully you?"
Zachary shook his head and said, "Isaac's here."
I froze for a moment, then looked up to see Isaac standing not far away.
"Why are you back so late?" Isaac asked.
"I went to the hospital." I was a bit surprised, staring at the man in front of me.
"Are you feeling unwell?" Isaac asked, his voice unusually soft.
"No, I just went to visit Alex."
Isaac had never spoken to me so gently. At least since I returned to the Parks family, our relationship had been colder than that of strangers.
He raised an eyebrow, his gaze lingering on me with an inscrutable expression, but he didn't say a word.
