Isaac's sudden shift in attitude left me feeling inexplicably uneasy. More surprisingly, he stayed for dinner.
For as long as I could remember, he had always been indifferent to me, treating me like I was insignificant. In fact, he thought I was only after the Parks family's wealth.
But he had partially guessed correctly—what I wanted was not just my share of the inheritance.
After dinner, Isaac showed no intention of leaving. Instead, he spent a long time playing with Zachary. The atmosphere in the house felt strange and tense.
Thankfully, Bonnie was still on her business trip.
If she were here, seeing Isaac would have left her unsure whether to laugh or cry.
Javier and Maliyah had never met Isaac before. They were polite but distant, especially since he had lived with the Parks for years and even called Melody, the lady of the house, "Mom."
It was something they couldn't quite accept.
So after dinner, the two of them retreated to their rooms. Marvin, on the other hand, lingered in the living room.
"Did you come to see me for something?" I asked.
Once Marvin left, the once lively living room was now left with just Isaac and me, while Dorothy was cleaning in the kitchen. Sophina had taken Zachary to his room to put him to bed.
Isaac wiped the smile off his face, his deep eyes locked onto me.
"What is your real purpose in returning to the Parks family?" he asked, his voice steady.
I scoffed softly, replying, "Is that why you're here? Didn't you already know?"
"You've already gotten your share, so why are you still keeping Zachary by your side?" Isaac questioned.
"If you can ensure his safety, you can take him with you," I responded coldly.
As expected, Isaac was never going to be kind or friendly towards me. To him, Kailyn was his sister, while I was nothing more than an unnecessary part of the family.
Actually, I might be seen as the common enemy of both him and Kailyn and Melody.
Isaac didn't respond. He turned his gaze away from me, but when he looked up again, I saw a barely noticeable sadness in his eyes, as if in his heart, I shouldn't be in front of him at all. I was the disruption to the peaceful life he thought he had.
Had I not appeared, he would still be the young master of the Parks family, Melody's son, and his identity wouldn't be so widely known.
I could feel his resentment towards me. He probably wished Melody was his real mother. But he refused to accept his true identity, lying to himself for all these years.
I hesitated for a moment, not wanting to escalate things with him. But then I thought—if my mother knew that her son, fully aware of his background and the fact that his biological mother was forced out of the Parks family by Melody, still chose to accept Melody and Kailyn—it would break her heart.
I locked eyes with him, a bitter smile curling on my lips. "Isaac, do you ever wish you were Melody's child? That way, you'd be the young master of the Shepherd family, Kailyn's older brother. You'd get everything you ever wanted, wouldn't you?"
"But the truth is, Melody never saw you as her son. Her kindness? It's just another way to manipulate you."
Isaac looked at me for a long time, then sneered, "And what about you? What was your purpose in getting close to me? What was your purpose in returning to the Parks family?"
"I never intended to get close to you," I sighed. "I want to know why my mother left the Parks family all those years ago. Why did she choose to die with me rather than return to the Brown family?"
Isaac furrowed his brows, a look of suspicion crossing his face.
"Do you think you're so unfortunate? Abandoned by your mother and feeling sorry for yourself all these years? You finally have a place in the Parks family, and then I just show up?" I sighed heavily. "Isaac, do you know how Yvette lived? Do you know how I survived?"
He gave me a cold, stern look, his voice low, "I don't want to know about the past."
His words hit me like a cold wave, and for a moment, I was at a loss.
Of course, I couldn't force him to accept a woman who had never been a part of his life, nor could I make him acknowledge me as his sister. After all, we were not the ones who had been by his side all these years.
I frowned, raising my gaze, and coldly stared at Isaac. "So, what's your purpose for being here?"
Isaac said, "I came to take Zachary to Joy. You've already gotten what you want. If you want revenge, I suggest you give up on that idea."
I clenched my fists, glaring at Isaac with a mocking smile. "Joy sent Zachary to the Parks family because she wanted him to have a peaceful life, so he wouldn't end up dead on the streets. As for revenge, you're overestimating me.
"If you have the time to lecture me, maybe you should consider your own situation."
Isaac glared at me. "Laurel, I'm trying to help you. If you don't wake up, you'll only end up hurting Zachary and yourself."
"You never considered me family, so why bother acting like you care?" I shot back. "You're just scared that I might suppress Kailyn. Don't worry, as long as she doesn't come after me, I won't bother her."
I locked eyes with Isaac, my voice sharp. "But if anyone dares to touch those close to me, I'll make sure they regret it. I'll make them pay."
"Laurel, you're hopeless," Isaac ground out through clenched teeth.
I was done talking to him. Seeing him like this today made it clear that I would never consider him my older brother again. Blood ties meant nothing.
I almost wished I could slap some sense into him. Did he really think Melody cared about him? She probably wished he were dead, so that Maddox's inheritance would go to Kailyn.
What she didn't count on was Zachary and me showing up.
I could only imagine that now, Melody's main concern was eliminating us both.
Isaac, seeing that I wouldn't listen, turned and stormed out, his anger boiling over.
As the door slammed, I collapsed onto the sofa.
I lay there for less than three minutes before the doorbell rang again.
I groggily stood up, rushing to open the door.
I had expected it to be Marvin, coming back for gossip, but to my surprise, it was Betty standing at the door.
"Miss Parks, sorry to disturb you. Would you be interested in having a drink with me?" Betty asked politely.
I snapped back to my senses and nodded silently.
After all, when a beauty invites you, there's no reason to refuse.
But more importantly, I wanted to know what she was up to.
