The moment I heard Jayden's voice, a chill ran down my spine.
He said, "My dear sister, isn't this news something worth celebrating for you?"
I jolted upright, quickly adjusting my disheveled hair. My brows furrowed as I spoke with a calm but cold tone, "If Philbert dies, Melody will likely take control of the entire Shepherd family. How is that good news?"
Jayden chuckled darkly, "Who said Melody will be the one taking over the Shepherd family?"
"Then what do you mean?" I asked, confused.
As far as I knew, the Shepherd family had only one daughter, Melody. That's why they had Kailyn inherit her mother's surname—to eventually take over the family business.
"The Shepherd family may only have one daughter, but there are many branches. And I've received some important information." Jayden's voice suddenly trailed off, clearly relishing the suspense.
I furrowed my brow, irritated by his obvious attempt to tease me, but the information he was hinting at was something I desperately needed to know.
"What is it?" I couldn't help but ask.
Jayden sighed, his tone suddenly almost playful, "Laurel, don't you miss me after being away for a few days?"
I massaged my temples, holding back my frustration. I knew better than to get into petty arguments with Jayden. Though he wasn't in Nifelheim City, I still couldn't risk making him angry. Who knew what crazy things he might do?
"Too many problems lately. I haven't had the time to think about you," I said, keeping it blunt, knowing it would be worse to lie.
"Who's making you unhappy? Do you want me to take care of them?" Jayden's voice suddenly turned colder.
"No need to trouble yourself. I'll handle it myself," I quickly replied, not wanting him to get involved. If he could go after Kailyn so ruthlessly, I had no doubt he wouldn't hesitate to do the same to anyone else.
Though I knew Jayden orchestrated Kailyn's miscarriage, even with such a major leverage in my hands, it didn't mean I could easily control him. He could easily turn around and claim I had pushed him into doing everything.
The truth was, having too many of his secrets in my hands wasn't necessarily an advantage.
"Alright then. But if something difficult comes up, let me know..." Jayden's voice was laced with indulgence, but it sent a shiver down my spine.
I took a deep breath. His voice, though calm, always had an unsettling effect on me.
"What news did you receive?" I asked, trying to focus.
Jayden sighed, and there was a slight tone of hurt in his voice as he said, "Laurel, you still haven't said my name."
I tightened my grip on the phone and forced a smile. "Alright, Jayden, what news do you have about the Shepherd family?"
"Of course I can tell you." Jayden's tone immediately brightened, his voice now lighter and almost amused.
The madness of his world was beyond the understanding of ordinary people.
"Philbert wrote a will, and the inheritance wasn't left to Melody," Jayden chuckled, the sound laced with schadenfreude.
I paused for a moment, stunned. "Who did he give it to? Does he have an illegitimate child?"
"Of course not, he has a nephew." Jayden sighed deeply, dragging out the words. "I don't know what kind of madness Philbert was thinking, but he made his own nephew the heir."
"Are you sure?" I asked, not fully believing it.
Jayden's tone was firm as he replied, "Absolutely. The news is confirmed. Imagine how Melody will feel when she finds out that the empire she built has been handed over to someone else."
After hanging up the phone, I rubbed my forehead, still confused. As far as I knew, Philbert had long ago written a will, and Melody was the designated heir. Why would he suddenly change it?
Could it be because he was unhappy with Kailyn marrying Austin?
I thought for a moment, but dismissed my guess. Even if Philbert didn't like Austin, Kailyn was still Melody's biological daughter.
Why would he suddenly change his will?
Of course, I couldn't take Jayden's word for it entirely. Even if what he said was true, as long as Philbert was still alive, he could easily change the will again. Only after the will was made public could I know the truth.
More importantly, if Jayden knew about this, then Melody, with her resources, would definitely know too.
This meant that for the time being, she likely had no interest in dealing with me.
With sleep completely gone, I climbed out of bed and went to take a hot shower. Afterward, I sat down at my desk and opened my notebook, beginning to sort through the Wilhelm case.
From the moment the case began, I had documented every detail, every clue, in my notebook.
Wilhelm's body had been pulled from the river, but the actual crime scene was still unknown. From the current evidence, the most likely suspect was his wife, Meryl.
After Wilhelm's death, Meryl stood to receive a large insurance payout. However, according to police investigations, Meryl had no alibi during the time of the murder. She was a very content person, the only daughter in her family.
While it wouldn't be easy for her to support her own daughter, there was no reason to think she would resort to murder.
More importantly, Wilhelm's heart was missing. This suggested the killer wanted his heart. But if that were the case, the killer's method of disposing of the body was too sloppy.
Then there was Liesel—she had good conditions and undoubtedly had no shortage of suitors. She was also a small-time influencer. Why would she choose Wilhelm, a man with a family and, in the eyes of others, no remarkable qualities?
Wilhelm couldn't even afford to support his own daughter—how could he afford to take care of Liesel?
Wilhelm likely approached Liesel because of her beauty. But why would Liesel be interested in a man like Wilhelm?
The relationship between the two was definitely not as simple as it appeared.
I quickly grabbed my phone and dialed Marvin.
It rang for a while before he finally answered.
"Where are you?" I asked.
Marvin, yawning, complained, "I just fell asleep, and you had to wake me up with your call."
I asked, "Why is the police so sure that Wilhelm and Liesel were lovers?"
"Their call records and chat logs," he replied.
"Do they have any transfer records between them?"
Marvin fell silent for a moment before responding, "Why do you need that?"
After a pause, he seemed to remember something, his voice turning serious. "I'm not free right now. I'll call you back later."
Before I could respond, he hung up.
Sighing in frustration, I closed my notebook. As I was washing up, I heard the sound of a door opening from outside my room.
A moment later, someone pushed the door open. I leaned out and saw Javier standing at the doorway, pale-faced. "Laurel, Angela is dead."
