"The Adams family announced Angela's death this morning... Is it true?" Javier's eyes were locked on me, his expression stiff and uneasy. After a pause, he hesitated, almost as if trying to convince himself. "No, it can't be. Angela can't be dead."
I stood frozen in place, staring at the panicked, helpless look on Javier's face. A sense of doubt crept into my mind. Why would the Adams family suddenly announce Angela's death?
Javier's eyes were clouded with sorrow as he shook his head, gripping my arm tightly. His face was strained, filled with anxiety and urgency. Taking a deep breath, as if trying to calm his nerves, he forced a smile, saying, "That obituary has to be fake, right?"
"Say something," Javier's gaze never left me, his grip on my arm tightening.
"Javier." I gently patted his shoulder, sighing inwardly as I watched the unshed tears in his eyes. The truth would eventually come out, but I hadn't expected it to happen this quickly.
Javier had always been a carefree person, rarely showing emotions.
Since his father passed away, Javier had hardly shed a tear. Even when his grandparents passed, he only casually wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, laughing it off with, "I just got smoke in my eyes."
This was in stark contrast to his sister Maliyah, who would break down in tears.
Javier wanted to cry, but he didn't dare.
He knew that if he showed his sadness, it would only make his mother more sorrowful.
And he also believed that the ones who passed wouldn't leave in peace if those who remained were in distress.
Perhaps it was because he had been raised by his grandparents, but there was always a hint of superstition in him.
Even though Javier was highly educated, he still clung to the belief that his emotions had to be contained for the sake of peace.
But I was the only one who knew—he was just hiding his longing for the ones lost, hoping that one day, they would reunite.
"Javier, don't get so worked up," I said.
I was just about to tell him everything about Angela when I heard hurried footsteps approaching.
Moments later, Marvin appeared, his face pale and heavy with exhaustion. His eyes, however, were eerily sharp.
Before Marvin could speak, Javier released my arm and hurried toward him, almost stumbling as he asked, "Marvin, is it true? Did Angela really die?"
Marvin frowned, glancing at me with a somewhat unreadable look before sighing and saying, "Javier, she's really gone."
"No..." Javier's voice faltered, denying the truth he had just heard. His body began to tremble uncontrollably, and he collapsed to the floor, looking like all the strength had been drained from him. His face turned ashen, and he looked up at Marvin, his eyes cold with disbelief.
Marvin's gaze flickered with surprise, but it passed in an instant.
He looked at me, confused and helpless, before it seemed like he understood something. He opened his mouth as if to say something, but not a word came out.
Marvin was never good at comforting people. Angela's death had shaken him too, and right now, it was clear he didn't know how to console Javier either.
"Get up, the floor's too cold," I said, pulling Javier's arm, furrowing my brow as I helped him back up.
Javier, like a puppet with its strings cut, allowed me to lift him. He sat down on the sofa, and after what felt like an eternity, he looked up at me and asked in a hollow voice, "Aren't you sad?"
Seeing Javier in such agony, I sat next to him and softly replied, "Angela wouldn't want me to be sad."
Javier raised his head, his expression mixed with confusion, as if he wanted to ask something, but in the end, he remained silent.
After a long pause, Javier stood up and, deep in thought, walked back to his room.
Once he left, I let out a deep breath, relieved for a moment of peace.
Marvin spoke, "Don't worry. He'll be fine."
I nodded, though a nagging worry still lingered in my chest.
"Javier has always had feelings for Angela," I murmured.
"I can tell. Didn't expect him to have the guts to go this far," Marvin said with a bitter smile. "It's a pity. He won't even have the chance to be rejected anymore."
We both knew Angela would never have returned Javier's feelings.
Not just because of their age difference, but more importantly, Angela's ideal type was a man like Isaac—tall, distinguished, someone with status.
For someone who cared so much about looks, it wasn't just about having a good physique; the man also had to be handsome.
No matter the situation, Isaac always exuded an air of calm composure. And of course, he had to be elegant, a gentleman.
It was a shame that Angela never found a man who could capture her heart, though.
She never liked the "innocent puppy" type. To be precise, she was afraid of breaking the pure, kind hearts of such men.
What she liked were the seasoned, experienced players in love.
"Only a worthy opponent is interesting," Angela would say with a half-smile, her eyes betraying her longing for love, though she lived with a profound understanding of its fleeting nature.
"Love doesn't last. The only ones that do are the tragic ones, the ones that leave a lasting impression."
When Angela said this, there was a touch of resignation in her eyes.
But who would have thought that the seemingly rational and beauty-obsessed Angela was actually a hopeless romantic?
When she saw Isaac, she fell for him at first sight.
Too bad she never had the chance to confess, because she passed away before she could.
Though I always thought Isaac didn't deserve her, I never had the chance to tell her that the man she fell for was actually my older brother.
Perhaps it was because we looked alike that she was drawn to him in the first place.
After all, when we were younger, Angela had followed me home, enchanted by my looks.
"Why did the Adams family suddenly announce Angela's death?" I lowered my voice, looking at Marvin.
Marvin said, "I just found out too."
A flash of surprise crossed my eyes. I knew Marvin and Michael weren't on good terms. The obituary had only been released in the early morning, and it seemed like the timing was rushed.
Angela's cause of death was a sudden car accident, which resulted in her death after failed attempts at resuscitation.
This was consistent with her actual cause of death; the only thing that had been changed was the time and location of the incident.
Something about it didn't sit right with me.
Suddenly, Marvin's voice broke my train of thought. "Did you see Jamilah a few days ago? How's she doing?"
I froze for a moment, quickly snapped back to reality.
"She said it was just a cold. Is she not at the company?" As I spoke, I picked up my phone and dialed Jamilah's number, but it kept ringing without an answer.
A sense of foreboding gripped me. Turning to Marvin, I said, "She's not answering her phone."
