Alex raised an eyebrow, his expression calm but his eyes sparkling with amusement as he said, "The Parks family, don't you know them?"
I fixed my gaze on the man in front of me, my voice steady as I replied, "Do I need to?"
A sharp jolt hit my chest, and after a long pause, I was certain of one thing: no one outside of myself could possibly know my real identity. Not even Bonnie would know that my biological father was Maddox Parks, the head of the powerful Parks family.
If Bonnie knew, she wouldn't let my mom struggle alone working multiple jobs to raise me. After all, the Parks family wasn't just rich—Maddox's wife came from the famous Shepherd family, an industrial giant.
Kailyn, Isaac's younger sister, had the same bloodline, though one took their father's name and the other, their mother's.
Even if Maddox refused to acknowledge me as his illegitimate daughter, I couldn't imagine he'd care about a little pocket change. Surely, even the scraps from his fortune could support my mom and me comfortably.
In truth, I'd often wondered if Maddox even knew I existed. When my mom found out she'd been deceived, she left him without a second thought, determined to have me, no matter the consequences.
But what I couldn't understand was why she let me carry his surname if she hated him so much?
Yet, "Parks" wasn't an uncommon surname in Nifelheim City—there were plenty of them around.
Throughout my six years with Austin, I never mentioned my father. To everyone else, my father was dead, not even my best friend Angela knew the truth. The only thing she knew was that my real father wasn't dead at all.
So, I was sure Alex couldn't possibly know who my father was.
Then why on earth was he bringing up the Parks family?
"This business card shouldn't belong to Angela, right?" Alex casually pulled out a card from his pocket and handed it to me with a slow, deliberate motion. "Isaac's not the type to hand these out casually."
I froze for a second, meeting his gaze. His smile was still there, but there was something odd about his tone—was there a hint of bitterness in it? Or was it just a feeling, or perhaps his possessiveness?
Austin was the same way back then, unable to stand the thought of me interacting with any other man, even his friends. But it wasn't because he loved me—no, it was something else.
I shrugged, glancing at Alex with a detached expression. "It's the contact I asked for compensation."
Alex furrowed his brow slightly, as if he wanted to say something but held back.
I scoffed internally, thinking to myself, Javier added me on WhatsApp, but I didn't add him back.
At that, Alex nodded with satisfaction.
A strange feeling twisted in my chest—were all the men from the Herrera family so... chauvinistic?
"Are you short on money?" Alex asked, his voice slow and almost lazy.
I rolled my eyes inwardly, but outwardly kept a calm expression. "I don't think anyone would mind having more money."
Alex then handed me a credit card, his smile light but firm. "I don't want my wife using another man's money. Please remember that."
I bit my lip, took the card, and gave him a tight, somewhat sarcastic smile. "Anything else you need?"
"For now, just this. The driver's downstairs, let him take you wherever you want." Alex leaned back, pinching the bridge of his nose and slowly closing his eyes. His long lashes fluttered, giving off a lazy yet seductive vibe.
"Alright," I said, standing up. Just as I reached the door, I stopped and turned, hesitating for a moment before asking, "What's this thing you want to announce tomorrow?"
Alex gave me a confused look. "Hmm? You're curious?"
I couldn't help but chuckle bitterly. This old fox loved asking questions he already knew the answer to.
He frowned slightly, then leaned back in the sofa, stretching out with a relaxed, almost sensual posture. A devilish smile curled on his lips as he said, "I arranged a marriage for Austin. He'll be pleased."
My fingers tightened around my purse as I frowned.
"I took his woman, and I have to make some compensation," he added, the words hanging heavily in the air.
I raised an eyebrow, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips. With that, I turned and walked out of the room without a second glance.
Once back in my own room, my legs felt like jelly. After a while, I recovered my strength just in time to hear the doorbell ring. Reluctantly, I got up to answer it and found Angela standing in the doorway, her face lit up with a mischievous grin.
"You've got to be kidding me. You were in his room for an hour and didn't do anything?" Angela gave me a disapproving look.
I rolled my eyes. "Miss Adams, what's going on in that head of yours?"
"Been a while since you've had some fun, huh?" Angela raised an eyebrow, flashing a flirtatious smile.
"So, is Alex inviting the Adams family to the dinner tomorrow?"
Angela nodded, her playful smile suddenly fading as she grabbed my arm, her eyes boring into mine. "Mr. Herrera's always been low-key. Is he going to reveal your identity?"
"Definitely not." I didn't hesitate for a second.
Angela blinked, clearly confused and suspicious.
I was certain because I knew that crafty old fox would never put himself in the fire.
I sighed lightly. "Alex said he took Austin's woman and needs to make some compensation."
"Compensation?" Angela's lips curled into a smirk. "Didn't know he was so nice."
"I broke up with Austin. Why does Alex need to make compensation? It's like he thinks I did something wrong," I frowned, suddenly remembering Maliyah's job. "That bastard even got Maliyah fired. Do you know any lawyers?"
"What happened?"
I was about to speak when my phone buzzed.
It was a message from Maliyah.
[You're amazing! The company paid me my salary and even gave me an extra three months' pay.]
I stared at the message, confused—what had I done?
Before I could reply, another message came through.
[Let's grab barbecue tonight. I'm treating, same old place. Don't be late.]
[Okay.]
Angela watched me, all curiosity now. "What's going on with Maliyah? What did that jerk do now?"
I frowned and glanced around cautiously. "Angela, does this restaurant have any micro surveillance cameras?"
