"Why do you think the person trying to kill me isn't related to the case I'm investigating?" Marvin's deep, cool voice suddenly broke through my tangled thoughts, pulling me back to reality.
I turned to look at him, his face serious as he sat beside me. I cleared my throat before responding, "The person trying to stop you from investigating probably didn't intend to kill you. Of course, it's possible that after the first plan failed, they sent someone to finish the job, but I think it's all too coincidental."
Marvin gave a slight nod, his expression approving.
He said, "From my analysis of the person behind this, the first one only tried to frame me. Their style is careful and understated—they wouldn't risk hiring a hitman. If the assassin were caught, they'd be exposed."
His arms were crossed, and he furrowed his brow. He spoke slowly, "I haven't even gotten the money, and yet they're already trying to take my life?"
Looking at Marvin, who appeared completely unconcerned with life or death, I couldn't help but roll my eyes. "If you don't take your father's assets, your mom's going to be furious with you."
Marvin scoffed, his face full of disdain. After thinking for a moment, he half-joked, "What if my dad has an illegitimate son? I never thought I'd end up in a soap opera."
Seeing his nonchalance only made my frustration boil over. I wanted nothing more than to grab him by the collar and smack some sense into him.
Being a cop already put Marvin in danger, but now with someone paying for an assassination, the risk was far greater. Even Alex had warned me to stay home and not get involved in this mess.
But Marvin wasn't just a friend to me—he was like family.
Even if it meant putting my life at risk, I couldn't just stand by and watch him fall into danger.
In that moment, I finally understood why Alex had saved me back then. Maybe he didn't care that much about me, but he promised my mom he would protect me.
The next morning, after I finished washing up, I made my way to the dining room, only to find Marvin storming in, his face dark with anger. His forehead was etched with veins, and his fists were clenched tightly, as though he were about to flip the table.
Sophina and Zachary, who had been chatting and laughing as they ate breakfast, were startled by his appearance.
Zachary almost knocked over his milk, panicked, grabbing two eggs and gulping down the milk he usually hated. He quickly pulled Sophina's hand, rushing out in a flurry.
The once lively dining room now felt eerily quiet, with only Marvin and me left.
He marched over to me, towering above me, his voice cold as he demanded, "What's this announcement from Jamilah about?" Before I could speak, he cut me off, "Don't try to play dumb with me, Jamilah wouldn't suddenly leave all her assets to you."
I froze for a moment, confusion flickering in my eyes. Before I could react, Marvin sneered, "You're acting like you didn't know this was going to happen. Laurel, do you know what kind of consequences you'll face for doing this?"
I opened my mouth but couldn't answer him.
Because deep down, I knew that even if I told him I had no idea Jamilah would leave all her property to me, he wouldn't believe me.
After all, yesterday I had made a deal with Jamilah, asking her to give me 30% of the Adams Group's shares. My plan was to let the people behind this know that even if they killed Marvin, the Adams Group would never fall into their hands.
More importantly, I wanted to use this to lure out the person who wanted to take over the Adams Group. Henry said it was someone from the Parks family trying to swallow up the company. If that were the case, they might be the ones who killed Angela.
When I returned to the Parks family, I learned a lot about Maddox's business tactics. Over the span of just ten years, hundreds of companies had gone bankrupt.
Maddox had bought them at rock-bottom prices, driving many people to their deaths. He was the classic example of a bloodsucking businessman.
On the outside, Maddox was seen as a successful entrepreneur with a big heart, but in reality, he was ruthless.
Marvin seemed to have guessed my thoughts. His eyes softened with concern and helplessness as his tone grew gentler. "I know you took Jamilah's offer to protect me, but I don't want you putting yourself in danger."
"Don't you want to know who killed Angela?" I looked at him, my gaze firm.
"But I don't want to lose you too, after losing Angela," Marvin's voice cracked as his eyes reddened. He stared at me, his gaze filled with affection and worry.
I blinked away the dryness in my eyes and responded with quiet resolve, "Do you think you can beat me now?"
Marvin's eyes darkened as he glared at me, biting his lip in frustration. "I'm injured right now."
"If you weren't injured, you still couldn't beat me," I said, a teasing smile tugging at my lips.
He was left speechless, grumbling as he plopped onto the sofa, looking sulky. "Fine. You can't go anywhere now. Have you even considered your husband? What will he do if something happens to you?"
I shook my head helplessly and sat down beside him, speaking softly, "I know you're worried about me, but I can't ignore this. Jamilah's announcement about Angela's death was made because someone's been secretly tracking Angela's movements. Don't worry, I won't let anything happen to me."
Marvin turned to look at me, his eyes full of inner conflict and struggle. After a long pause, he sighed and said, "I know I can't change your mind, but promise me that whatever happens, you'll contact me immediately. I'll protect you."
I nodded, warmth flooding my chest.
We both knew the dangers ahead, but for the sake of the truth, and to protect those we care about, neither of us would back down.
"So, what do we do now?" Marvin asked, his eyes regaining their usual determination.
"We keep investigating Wilhelm's case," I replied.
Marvin nodded and said, "Alright, I'll go check the files now."
With that, he stood up, ready to leave.
As I watched him walk away, I let out a deep breath, muttering to myself, "Glad I got him out of here."
Moments later, the driver approached me with a cold expression and said, "Mrs. Herrera, Mr. Herrera wants to see you."
I turned to look at him, his face serious as he sat beside me. I cleared my throat before responding, "The person trying to stop you from investigating probably didn't intend to kill you.
