Bailee snorted loudly, the sound sharp and filled with provocation. She lifted her chin arrogantly, her eyes narrowing with disdain as she locked her gaze on me. "I really want to see who the true winner will be in the end," she said, each word dripping with superiority.
Her tone and gaze made it clear—she thought of me as a mere insignificant player in her little game. It was baffling how confident she seemed, believing she could actually become Alex's wife. After all, anyone with eyes could see that Alex had no interest in her.
"Fine, we'll see," I replied, my voice calm, offering her a mocking smile.
It was clear she was holding back the anger bubbling inside her, but all I saw was pity, even sadness. There was no sense of victory in her eyes, just an overwhelming sense of loss.
Bailee, the illegitimate daughter of the Lambert family, had been desperate to prove her worth and gain the acceptance of the powerful Lambert clan.
Sadly, she had chosen the hardest path possible.
She tried to leverage Alex's life-saving favor, hoping he would fall for her, but what she didn't realize was that Alex wasn't swayed by such things—her efforts were doomed from the start.
She had sent me those texts before, trying to sow discord between Alex and me, trying to create misunderstandings.
But what she hadn't expected was that I would brush it off completely—no drama, no tears.
Maybe when she realized her plans were useless, she decided to ally with Leah, but she didn't anticipate Austin firing her.
She didn't know that Austin owed me 150,000 dollars, a debt he'd have to pay, especially because he didn't want anyone knowing about his relationship with Mandy.
As for the rest of it, her intentions were clear. She wanted to manipulate Alex, but I knew better than to let her. I glanced at Bailee with disgust, and if this weren't the office, I'd slap the smug look off her face.
"Ms. Foster, you're still so young—how did you develop such... unique interests?" I asked, my voice soft, but the silence around us made sure my words were loud enough for anyone nearby to hear.
Footsteps faltered, and curious onlookers slowed, their gazes turning toward us. Bailee froze, her face momentarily filled with confusion. Clearly, she hadn't expected me to confront her like this.
"Looking to have a child by any means, seeking out high-quality men? At least you should get their consent first, right? And more importantly, they should be unmarried. Otherwise, one day, the wife might find a kid that looks just like her husband... and that could destroy a marriage," I continued, feigning a tone of gentle advice.
"You see my husband, don't you? Perhaps I should talk to him about donating some... sperm?" I asked casually, the words leaving my mouth with a deliberate bite.
Bailee's face turned beet red, and she stammered in embarrassment.
It was clear she hadn't expected such a public confrontation. For a moment, she seemed completely lost for words, unable to defend herself.
After a long pause, she finally spoke, her voice tinged with panic, "Mrs. Herrera, I know I got too close to Mr. Herrera, and that may have caused a misunderstanding, but I'm not what you think. I never planned to do anything like what you said."
"Really?" I raised an eyebrow, my expression dead serious, my eyes scanning hers carefully. "Then why did you keep accusing me of flirting with other men? Did you see it with your own eyes?
"If not, then why spread rumors? As for you, I've seen you cling to my husband for ages. You used to be a nurse, but you're not anymore. If you want to go back to your old job, that's your choice, but I'm a little possessive."
"I didn't! It's Lena...," Bailee tried to explain, but I immediately cut her off.
"Is it Lena who told you to ruin our marriage? Or did she approve of you trying to have a child by someone else?" I shot her a cold, piercing look. "You really think I'm an easy target, don't you?"
Bailee's face twisted with anger, her calm demeanor cracking. She glared at me, her true fury showing. She had stopped pretending to be the sweet, gentle woman she tried so hard to portray.
She opened her mouth to argue or defend herself, but I didn't give her a chance. I shot her a scornful glance before turning on my heel and walking away.
As I walked a few steps away, I glanced back and saw that Bailee hadn't followed me. A small sigh of relief escaped me, and the heavy weight on my chest lightened a little. Sometimes, you just have to let it out.
However, something about Bailee's words nagged at me. She seemed to already know that it was me who asked Yaeger to get the medicine.
I frowned, wondering why she was so certain. Had she figured it out, or was she just trying to test me? After all, very few people knew about my request. Even Betty and Alex knew Yaeger, but I never thought it would come to this.
I couldn't help but feel uneasy. Could Harold have found out that I sabotaged his plans? He wouldn't dare upset Yaeger, given his connections, but what would he do to me?
I stepped out of the elevator, suddenly aware of a pair of eyes watching me.
I lifted my head instinctively and saw Jayden standing not far away, his gaze fixed on me.
My heart skipped a beat, panic setting in. What was he doing here? What did he want? I clenched my fists, alert and on edge. My steps slowed, my instincts telling me to tread carefully.
Jayden didn't move, just stood there, his eyes fixed on me. His gaze felt like a freezing chill running down my spine, as if I were being watched by a cold-blooded snake.
The air seemed to freeze around me, and I could hear my heart thudding loudly in my chest, frantic and fast.
I took a deep breath, forcing myself to stay calm, reminding myself not to show any weakness in front of him.
With a forced sense of calm, I lifted my chin and walked toward him. With each step, my heartbeat quickened, but I continued to move, maintaining an air of defiance.
When I was just a few feet away from him, he finally spoke, his voice low and gravelly, as if it came from deep within his chest. "Mrs. Herrera, long time no see."
