After work, I rushed back to Honeydew in a state of panic, my steps hurried and frantic, filled with nothing but worry for Marvin.
I pushed open the door, and the silence inside hit me immediately. There was no familiar figure, and a wave of unease quickly spread through me.
In that moment, I suddenly remembered Alfie.
"Alfie, it's me. Marvin is missing, I've searched everywhere and can't find him. Can you help me?" My voice was trembling, filled with desperation.
Alfie responded, "Don't worry. I'll have someone check the last location of his phone number right away."
"Please let me know as soon as you have any news," I urged, gripping the phone tightly.
After hanging up, I paced back and forth in the room, my mind racing with anxiety. Marvin wasn't the type to just disappear without reason—something had to have happened.
His image kept flashing through my mind, and his words from earlier today only deepened my unease. If I continued digging into the truth about Angela's death, not only would I be putting myself in danger, but I'd also drag those close to me into it.
My heart pounded in my chest, a bad feeling washing over me.
Just then, Drew walked up to me, his expression serious. "Miss, should I go look for him?"
"Where are you going to look? Nifelheim City is huge, and you can't even find your way around," Sophina said, her face filled with frustration. "If only I had stopped him when I saw him leaving. Laurel, do you think Marvin's alright?"
I opened my mouth, unsure how to answer Sophina.
After a moment of thought, I turned and headed back to my room, dialing the emergency contact in my phone.
The phone rang, its shrill sound piercing the silence of the room. Every ring felt like it was echoing in my chest.
Finally, the call was answered, and a rustling sound came through the line, as if papers were being shuffled. Then came the deep, magnetic voice of a man.
"Marvin is missing."
The man replied, "Laurel, this is a small issue. You shouldn't be asking me for help with this."
It was Asher, and his calm voice annoyed me more than I expected.
"Asher, this is not a small issue to me," I raised my voice, frustration clear in my tone.
Asher was silent for a moment, then said, "Finding someone is Alex's specialty. Of course, I can help, but it will take more time."
I paused, hung up, and rushed downstairs, barely able to digest what Asher had said. Grabbing my bag, I dashed out the door.
Liam was standing downstairs. When he saw me rushing, he sighed, "Mrs. Herrera, you want Mr. Herrera's help to find someone in Nifelheim City, and it's a man at that. It's not going to be easy."
I replied, "Isn't it just about finding someone? How hard can it be?"
"It's not that simple. Serenity Clubhouse's branch here is very discreet. If we mobilize the whole thing, it will definitely be noticed, and that would leave traces," Liam explained.
I didn't quite understand his reasoning, but right now, I needed to find Marvin quickly.
I dialed his phone again, but it still went straight to voicemail.
After a while, Alfie called back. "Laurel, after some inquiry, the station hasn't reinstated Marvin's position, and the reasons are unknown. So the department cannot assign him any tasks. In other words, Marvin must have received some insider information and is investigating on his own."
"Can't you track the last location of his phone?" I asked urgently.
"We can't find it," Alfie replied, sounding helpless.
I bit my lip, unease creeping into my thoughts. If even the police couldn't trace his phone's last location, the only possibility was that someone had used a jammer to block the signal.
"Alfie, please let me know immediately if there's any news," I said, trying to keep my voice calm.
"Okay, I'll keep searching," Alfie responded before hanging up.
I stared out of the car window at the flashing lights, my mind full of mixed emotions, and instinctively tightened my grip on the phone.
Twenty minutes later, I gently pushed open the door to the hospital room. Alex was sitting up in bed with his eyes closed, seemingly asleep.
I tiptoed over to his bedside, brewed a cup of coffee, and carefully placed it on his nightstand.
Just as I set the cup down, Alex suddenly opened his eyes.
My heart skipped a beat. I quickly handed him the cup.
"Did you fall asleep?" I smiled at Alex, trying to keep my tone casual.
Alex glanced at me indifferently, took the cup, sipped it, and shook his head. Just as he seemed about to speak, I hastily interrupted.
"Are you hungry? Is there anything you'd like to eat?" I asked, my voice laced with a touch of pleading.
The reason I hadn't immediately asked Alex for help was because I feared he would refuse. Alex had never liked Marvin, and being the cold, distant person he was, there was no way he would use the Serenity Clubhouse to help me find Marvin.
So even though I was frantic, I couldn't let him see that.
Alex glanced at me again, his expression still indifferent. "Not hungry, I have no appetite."
I sighed quietly. He didn't even ask why I was here, acting as if it didn't matter. It left me feeling a little lost.
"Are you feeling unwell? Should I call a doctor to check on you?" My concern for Marvin made my words spill out quickly.
"No need, I'm fine," Alex said slowly. "Just pour me some water. Coffee keeps me up at night."
Before he even finished his sentence, I immediately poured a glass of water and placed it beside him.
I quickly nodded, giving him a smile that wasn't entirely genuine. "There's something I need your help with."
"What is it?" Alex's expression remained neutral, his tone cool.
"Marvin is missing. Can you find him?" I gathered all my courage and asked.
Alex's eyes widened with confusion, his gaze fixed on mine, his voice calm. "Has it been more than twenty-four hours? If he's really missing, you should be calling the police, not me."
I pushed open the door, and the silence inside hit me immediately. There was no familiar figure, and a wave of unease quickly spread through me.
