The rain had stopped, and sunlight filtered through the dappled leaves, casting patches of light on the ground.
I slowly sat up in bed, feeling light-headed, my limbs weak and heavy with exhaustion. As I raised my hand to touch my forehead, the heat radiating from it confirmed that I was likely sick.
After a quick wash-up, I picked up my phone and texted Danny, letting him know I wouldn't be going to work today. I might not go to work, but I couldn't avoid going to the hospital to see Marvin.
Arriving at the hospital, I was full of hope, expecting to see him awake. But although he had been out of danger, he remained unconscious in the ICU. The doctor, with a solemn expression, informed me that if he didn't wake up within 48 hours, he could potentially end up in a vegetative state.
"Doctor, is there really no other way?" I asked, gripping his arm desperately, my eyes pleading. "I'll pay anything, just please, help him wake up."
The doctor hesitated, then spoke, "There is a neural drug that might be effective in aiding his recovery."
Hope sparked in my chest. "Where can I find this drug? Does the hospital have it?"
He shook his head regretfully. "We don't have it. The only supply in Nifelheim City is with the Duesler family."
"Who?" My heart dropped.
"Yaeger," the doctor replied.
At the sound of his name, I froze. To get Alex back on his feet, I had gone to great lengths to get Yaeger the same drug that could help Marvin recover. Now, Marvin needed it too.
Why was fate toying with me like this, making me choose between two people who mattered so much?
Without wasting another second, I turned and shakily dialed Yaeger's number. When he picked up, I took a deep breath and tried to keep my voice calm. "Yaeger, where is the drug?"
There was a brief silence on the other end, then Yaeger's voice came, knowing and calculating. "Are you changing your mind? You want to save Marvin?"
I hadn't expected him to already know.
I closed my eyes, my emotions a mix of confusion and determination, but in the end, I answered firmly, "Yes, I want to save him."
As much as I wanted Alex to stand again, I couldn't watch Marvin slip away and become a vegetable.
Before I could regain my composure, I saw Bailee storming towards me, her eyes wide with anger and disbelief.
"You're crazy, Laurel! Why would you waste the drug on a useless cop instead of using it to get Alex back on his feet?" Her voice was a mix of fury and confusion.
I stared at her, a wave of exhaustion sweeping over me, but my face remained cold. "I trust you can find another drug to help Alex, after all, didn't you already make sure Alex would marry you?"
Bailee's face turned crimson with rage. "You... How can you be so selfish? Don't forget, you're his wife now."
I scoffed. "Selfish? If you really cared about Alex, you would have treated his leg long ago, not used it to make him owe you."
"It's not like that!" Bailee's voice wavered, her eyes red, as though the thought of Alex not walking again had sent her into a frenzy.
I remained firm. "No. I have to save Marvin first. That drug is crucial for him. Do you understand?"
Bailee's voice broke as she shouted, "You need to save Alex! The drug is vital to him, don't you get it?"
I took a deep breath, trying to keep calm. "Bailee, please, calm down."
"Why are you saving a stranger?" Bailee's tears spilled over. "You're so heartless."
I looked at her, my heart aching a little, but I couldn't back down. "I'm sorry, Bailee. But I've made my decision, and I won't change it. I trust that with your resources, you'll find a way to get Alex back on his feet."
She glared at me, rage in her eyes. "Who do you think you are? Who are you to make decisions for Alex?" Bailee rushed at me, trying to grab my collar.
I dodged easily, stepping back. "Bailee, stop. There's nothing more you can do. It's already done."
"Done? You ruined Alex's life, and now you say it's done?" Bailee collapsed onto the floor, covering her face, sobbing uncontrollably.
Looking at her pain, my own heart clenched, but I knew I had to stick to my choice.
Just then, my phone rang. It was Yaeger.
I quickly answered, and his voice was serious and low. "Laurel, I can give you the drug, but you need to understand—once you make this decision, there's no going back."
I gripped my phone tightly. "I've made my decision, Yaeger. Thank you."
After hanging up, I turned to Bailee. "I know you're upset, but please try to understand. Once this is over, I'll find a way to make it right with Alex."
Bailee looked up at me, resentment in her eyes. "Make it right? How can you make it right? You've destroyed everything for him, and you'll never be able to make up for it."
I didn't respond, turning and walking toward the ICU. Outside the door, I ran into Alfie.
He looked at me, concern flickering in his eyes. "Laurel, are you alright? I heard Bailee came to see you."
I forced a smile. "I'm fine. Alfie, do you think what I'm doing is right?"
Alfie paused, then placed a hand on my shoulder. "You're doing what you believe is right, and that's enough. Whatever the outcome, I'll support you."
I smiled at him, grateful. "Thank you, Alfie."
Just then, the head doctor hurried over. "Miss Parks, did you get the drug? The patient's condition is unstable, we need to administer the medication as soon as possible."
I nodded urgently. "Please wait, the drug is on its way."
Less than 20 minutes later, the drug arrived. The doctor took it and hurried into the room.
Alfie and I stood outside, waiting anxiously. Time seemed to stretch on endlessly, each second feeling like an eternity.
Finally, the door opened. The doctor stepped out, a tired but relieved smile on his face. "The procedure was successful. The patient is no longer in critical condition. Once the anesthesia wears off, he'll wake up."
I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding, and tears of relief streamed down my face. "Thank you, doctor. Thank you so much."
The doctor waved a hand. "It's what we're here for. However, because of the lack of oxygen to his brain, there will be a need for further observation and treatment."
"Does that mean he may have permanent damage?" Alfie asked, his voice filled with concern.
The doctor nodded gravely. "There could be some aftereffects."
