I lifted my head and saw Betty standing in front of me, her face flushed with anger, fists clenched tightly, her body trembling with rage as she yelled, "Laurel, you don't deserve to be Alex's wife."
"Miss Woods, what are you doing? Why are you hitting someone?" Before I could react, Sophina rushed over, shielding me from Betty, her face full of disbelief as she stared at Betty.
"What am I doing? You'd better ask Laurel what she did." Betty sneered, her eyes filled with contempt. "Laurel, you gave up the chance to help Alex stand again, just to save another man. Do you even understand what it means if he never stands up again? As his wife, do you even care about him?"
A sharp pang hit my chest. I hadn't expected that Alex had told her about his leg injury. From this, it seemed their relationship wasn't as simple as I thought.
But how did Betty find out that I gave the medicine to someone else?
Someone must have told her. That's why she came here to defend Alex.
I took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. I met her gaze and said, "I don't understand what you're saying. Alex's leg will heal. And as for our relationship, you don't need to worry about it."
"Heal? You make it sound so easy." Betty stepped forward, her sharp gaze fixed on me, filled with endless fury. "Do you know why he chose to stay in the hospital? He didn't want you to worry about him.
"But what about you? You had a way to treat his injury, but you gave that opportunity to someone else. Alex loves you so much, and this is how you repay him? Do you have a heart at all?"
"I couldn't let someone die when I could help. As for my husband's leg, no matter what happens to him, I will stay by his side."
"Stay by his side? What you're doing right now is hurting him." Tears welled up in Betty's eyes, her voice choked with emotion. "Do you have any idea how much pain he's in right now? You don't understand."
Her words stabbed at my heart like a sharp blade. I wanted to explain, but the lump in my throat blocked every word.
He's like snow on a mountain—if it falls into the dirt, it gets trampled and vanishes. I understand the pain all too well.
"Laurel, I thought you cared about Alex, but now it seems like he's just your cash cow." Betty sneered. "You don't love him, you don't care about him, so please, leave him. You're only dragging him down."
Before I could respond, the doorbell rang.
I turned and opened the door to see Alex sitting in a wheelchair, his face expressionless, with Lawrence, who looked nearly recovered, standing behind him.
Betty froze when she saw him. She quickly walked over to his side and asked, "Alex, why are you discharged from the hospital?"
Alex slowly wheeled himself into the room. His face was pale, his eyes full of exhaustion and disappointment. He looked much more drained than before.
Seeing him like this made my chest tighten, like I was suffocating.
"Betty, what are you doing here?" Alex's voice was hoarse and low.
Betty turned to him, her face full of concern and worry. "Alex, you're not well yet. You should stay in the hospital."
Alex asked, "Why aren't both of you at the company? What are you doing here?"
Betty furrowed her brow, her voice serious. "Alex, she gave the medicine that could save you to someone else."
"I know." Alex's face remained unreadable as he spoke softly, "I don't blame her. After all, it was her medicine, and she has the right to give it to anyone."
His words hit me with bitterness.
I hadn't kept my promise—the one where I said I would always save him first, no matter what happened. But now, I had saved someone else instead.
I stepped forward, squatting in front of his wheelchair, holding his hand, my voice trembling as I said, "I'm sorry. The medicine was meant for you. I just couldn't let someone die in front of me. I hope you can understand."
Alex sighed softly, reaching up as if to touch my face, but his hand fell weakly. "I understand. You don't need to apologize."
"Alex, don't you understand how important that medicine was for you?" Betty's eyes were full of anger.
Alex sighed again, his tone calm, "I know. I don't mind."
Betty paused, a flicker of surprise in her eyes. She smiled bitterly and said, "Alex, if you keep being so blind, one day she will ruin you."
With that, she stormed out, slamming the door behind her.
Alex withdrew his hand and said nothing more, controlling his wheelchair as he slowly retreated into the room.
I wanted to explain, but before I could, my phone rang.
It was an unknown number. Hesitant, I answered.
A low, hoarse voice came through the line. "I know the truth about Marvin's attack. If you want to know, come alone to the abandoned factory on the outskirts of the city. Don't tell anyone. Otherwise, Marvin won't survive."
Before I could say anything, the call ended.
I stood there, holding the phone, a sense of confusion building inside me.
"Laurel, what's going on?" Sophina asked quietly.
I took a deep breath, raising my head. "It's nothing. I need to go out for a while."
"Mr. Herrera seems upset. Where are you going?" Sophina immediately objected. "Don't you need to be with him?"
I shook my head, smiling slightly. "He doesn't want to see me right now. If I go to find him, it'll just make things worse."
Lawrence, standing nearby, nodded in agreement, but then couldn't help but ask, "Mrs. Herrera, where are you going?"
"It's nothing. I just need to go out. You don't have to follow me," I said, turning to walk toward the door.
This might be dangerous, but I had to go if I wanted to uncover the truth about Marvin's attack.
I drove alone to the abandoned factory on the outskirts of the city.
By the time I arrived, the sky was darkening. The factory was surrounded by an eerie atmosphere, the decaying buildings cast long shadows under the fading sunlight.
I took a deep breath, opened the car door, and stepped inside.
"Is anyone here?" I called out, my voice echoing in the empty space.
Suddenly, a shadow leapt from the corner. Before I could react, I felt a sharp pain at the back of my head, and everything went black...
