After Alex finished speaking, he paused for a moment, a mocking smile slowly curling at the corner of his lips, almost as if self-deprecating.
He tilted his head back slightly and fixed his gaze on me, his eyes full of unwavering determination. "Besides, I've become useless now. How could I possibly let you go so easily? After all, you gave the medicine that was meant to save me to someone else. From now on, you'll do everything according to my orders, and everything will be under my control."
His deep voice echoed in my ears, and for some reason, I felt a strange warmth rising in my chest as I stared at him, lost in thought.
"Isn't that enough?" Alex asked, seeing that I hadn't responded, his brow furrowing slightly. His sharp gaze never left me. "If you need more pocket money, we can talk about it."
As expected, money was the ultimate tool to get what you want. Four million dollars—an amount most people would spend their entire lives trying to earn. In this world, at least ninety percent of people work tirelessly just to scrape by, struggling for that small income.
For the remaining ten percent, nine out of ten live lives of extreme discipline, working day and night, believing that with enough effort, they can break through the barriers of their class. What they don't realize is that merely working hard isn't enough to escape the circles they're born into.
For someone like Alex, whose family background is impeccable, four million dollars is nothing—no more than pocket change. For the top one percent, the richest of the rich, such money is hardly worth noting as long as it doesn't provide emotional value.
"So, what do you want me to do?" I took a deep breath and looked at Alex with a wary gaze.
There's no such thing as a free lunch. Alex offering such an extravagant deal could only mean one thing: he wanted something from me.
Alex's eyes lingered on my face for a moment, and there seemed to be so much hidden in his gaze that I couldn't quite decipher.
"From now on, you will do everything my way," he said calmly but with undeniable firmness, as if announcing an order that couldn't be defied.
I nodded slightly. After all, he had promised to help me find Marvin, and for that alone, I had silently agreed to some of his demands.
"What else?" I pressed on, my eyes full of curiosity.
Alex fell silent for a while, as if contemplating how to phrase his next words. After a long moment, he spoke slowly. "I need you to help me stage a play."
"A play?" My eyes lit up at once, and I immediately nodded in agreement, a delighted smile creeping onto my face. After all, in this harsh world, no one turns down money.
"Well, if it's just acting, then I expect a performance fee." I said boldly, "Let's make sure everything is clear. You can afford it, after all."
I really couldn't figure out what Alex was thinking. He knew I was a woman driven by money, yet he still refused to divorce me.
At the moment, though, I wasn't in a hurry to leave him. First, his legs weren't fully healed, and he still needed someone to take care of him. Second, I needed to leverage his influence within the Parks family to stabilize my position there.
"Tomorrow, the entertainment headlines will feature your story of saving Marvin, and I'll move out to live in Chapney Mansion," Alex said, his tone calm, without the slightest ripple of emotion.
I nodded impassively, then slowly sank into the sofa, asking, "Do we need to have a fight? Should I still go to work?"
"Seems like you're excited about the idea of fighting," Alex said, narrowing his eyes slightly, his sharp gaze pinning me down as if he could see right through my thoughts.
His gaze sent a shiver down my spine, and though I felt a sense of unease, I remained composed and said, "I've always wanted to be an actress, since I was little."
Alex raised an eyebrow, a subtle smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, a playful glint in his eyes. "Really? I didn't know you had such a dream."
I felt uncomfortable under his gaze and instinctively avoided his eyes.
I cleared my throat, trying to break the awkward silence. "So, how are we going to stage this? Do we have a script or something?"
Alex shook his head lightly, his expression turning serious. "No script. Everything has to be improvised."
I nodded, my mind racing. This "play" was certainly not going to be as simple as it seemed.
Alex must have his own reasons, though he was unwilling to tell me just yet. But for the sake of the generous reward, I had no choice but to cooperate.
"When do we begin?" I asked eagerly, already scheming on how to perform in this "play" to get more money.
"Tomorrow," Alex said calmly. "Tomorrow morning, you'll get up as usual and go to work. I'll handle everything, and when the time comes, you'll act according to my instructions."
I nodded, though a knot of anxiety twisted in my stomach, I tried to keep my composure.
"Okay, I understand," I said softly, my voice betraying a hint of nervousness.
Alex looked at me, his eyes flashing with a complex emotion. He sighed lightly, his voice gentle. "Don't worry. As long as you cooperate with me, I won't treat you unfairly."
"Good," I said, lifting my head to meet his gaze with a sly smile.
Though I still didn't know what he was planning, I understood that for now, I had no choice but to trust him.
Alex nodded slightly, not saying anything further. The room fell into silence.
After a long while, Alex broke the silence. "You should rest. There's a lot to do tomorrow."
I stood up, murmured a soft "Okay," and then turned to head toward the bedroom. Just as I was about to leave, I caught a flicker of something in Alex's eyes—something like loneliness—but when I turned back to look at him, his expression had returned to its usual indifference.
I lay on the bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. Thoughts of Alex and the words he had spoken kept circling in my mind. The more I thought about it, the more my head ached, and I finally forced myself to close my eyes, trying to drift off.
The phone next to my pillow buzzed, and I reached over to see a message from Mandy.
"Everything is going according to plan. The bait has been set, just waiting for them to bite."
