The next morning, the sky was still dim, and a thin mist enveloped the city. The alarm clock rang precisely on time, its sharp tone breaking the silence of the room.
I turned over in bed, reaching out to turn off the alarm, and slowly opened my eyes.
Suddenly, I remembered the work I had to handle today, and I immediately woke up, sitting up quickly.
After a quick wash, I stood in front of the mirror. The woman in the reflection looked somewhat weary, but her eyes held a certain determination.
I meticulously touched up my makeup, using foundation to cover the fatigue on my face, and applied a bright red lipstick to try to look more energetic and lively.
After all, in a world filled with powerful families and intertwined interests, every detail could become the basis for others to judge you. I couldn't afford to slack off, not even a little.
Once ready, I put on my coat, grabbed my handbag, and left the house.
The cold air hit me immediately, causing a shiver. I tightened my coat around me and quickly made my way to the garage.
Along the way, I couldn't shake the thoughts of the things Alex had ordered me to do. His cold, inscrutable face kept appearing in my mind, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease.
When I arrived at the company, I immediately sensed something was off. The lively chatter of my colleagues stopped abruptly, and all eyes turned toward me—filled with curiosity, scrutiny, and even a touch of malicious glee.
I realized that the news of me saving Marvin must have already spread through the office.
In a place like this, full of gossip and rumors, even the smallest ripple could quickly become the hottest topic of discussion.
I took a deep breath, trying to keep calm, and forced a smile as I walked into my office. Just as I sat down, my phone rang. It was Alex. I answered, and his familiar, calm voice came through. "Have you arrived at the company?"
"I'm here," I replied softly, with a slight edge of unease in my voice.
"Good. From now on, you will do as I say," Alex's tone suddenly turned serious, like he was issuing an important command. "Soon, my assistant will bring a document to your office. After you look at it, act furious and call me. We'll have a big argument."
"Argue?" I furrowed my brow in confusion. Could this really fool anyone?
Before I could ask further, Alex spoke again, "Yes, just do it."
His tone left no room for questioning. I sighed, knowing I couldn't refuse. "Alright, I understand."
After hanging up, I leaned back in my chair, my mind filled with nervous anticipation.
Before long, Alex's assistant knocked on my office door, walked in, placed a document on my desk, and respectfully left.
I stared at the document, a bad feeling creeping up in me. I slowly opened it, and to my shock, it was a stack of photographs. And the subject of these photographs... was me.
The photos captured various moments of my recent life—entering the company, what I did during lunch, even shots of me at home.
A jolt of realization hit me. I had always suspected someone was following me, but I hadn't realized it was Alex's people keeping tabs on my every move.
Fury surged within me, and I clenched my fists, my nails digging painfully into my palms.
Suppressing my anger, I dialed Alex's number.
"Alex, what is the meaning of this?" I demanded coldly, my voice shaking with rage. "Why are you spying on me?" My words reverberated in the office, and I knew everyone could sense my anger.
"Why do you think it's spying and not protecting you?" Alex's voice remained calm, as if this were all perfectly justified.
"Protecting me? By having someone watch my every move?" I felt my face flush with anger, my voice rising. I couldn't understand his so-called "protection"; to me, it was an invasion of privacy and a complete disrespect.
"Laurel, have you forgotten your place?" Alex's voice grew colder, a sharp edge to it. "I'm not angry, but you're yelling at me?" His tone sent a shiver down my spine, and for a moment, I wondered if we were truly just acting or if this old fox was genuinely angry.
"Alex, I didn't marry you to become your pet! You can have all kinds of women around you, but you can't tolerate any friends of mine?" My voice was full of defiance as I released all the frustrations I'd been holding back.
Just then, the door to my office creaked open slightly, and Danny appeared, frozen at the doorway. Seeing me so furious, he stood there awkwardly, unsure whether to enter or leave, a look of discomfort on his face.
Before I could continue, Alex abruptly hung up on me.
The door was still ajar, and I could see the employees outside, pretending to work but no doubt eavesdropping on the rare drama unfolding.
I scoffed bitterly. "You send people to spy on me, and when I call you out, you just hang up on me?"
Danny's face instantly changed color. He hesitated, fumbling for words before he finally spoke, trying to explain for Alex. "Mrs. Herrera, don't be mad at Mr. Herrera. He... he's really upset with you. He moved to Chapney Mansion today."
I stared at him, surprised. Then, with a cold laugh, I said, "He made the mistake, and now he's moved out. It seems to me like he's just hiding his mistress there."
Danny started to say something else, but before he could, Leah, with a smug look on her face, walked up to my desk.
Her smile was wide, her eyes gleaming with delight as she said in a mocking tone, "Hiding his mistress? Well, he's legally entitled to, after all. You stole someone's fiancé. Now he's just getting things back on track."
I furrowed my brow, looking at Leah, then glancing at Danny. My voice was steady but edged with suspicion. "What do you mean?"
"You didn't know?" Leah let out a sigh, then continued, "Samantha found out that Alex moved to Chapney Mansion and went to stay there with him."
She shook her head, as if pitying me. "If I were you, I'd just give up the position of Mrs. Herrera. Why keep humiliating yourself? It's better to part on good terms."
