Austin had always been a smart person, not only that, but he was also someone with deep foresight.
However, at his core, he was a man who feared death and was unwilling to take responsibility. Perhaps much of this stemmed from his upbringing.
In his eyes, Amanda, his mother, not only played the role of his mother, but also acted as his father.
That was because his father, Kayden, was almost invisible. He didn't love his wife, and as a result, he paid little attention to Austin.
So in Austin's mind, his father was a man who avoided conflict, never truly involved in family matters.
Despite being from the prestigious Herrera family, Austin had lived with extreme caution, always worried about upsetting Alex's disapproval.
He had always feared Alex—not just because Alex was a senior member of the Herrera family, but also because of Alex's power.
Even through multiple financial crises, the Herrera Group had not only maintained its wealth but continued to be the dominant company in Newton City, and Alex had played a crucial role in that.
But there was something Austin seemed unaware of—Alex was not actually Lena's biological son.
It seemed the Herrera couple had kept this secret so well that even their eldest grandson was left in the dark. This meant that Raphael had likely already planned for Alex to take over the Herrera Group.
This was why Lena never spoke of it.
If Alex couldn't become the true heir to the Herrera Group, his true identity would eventually be exposed. If that happened, returning to take the CEO position would be a nearly impossible task.
Similarly, if the Parks family knew Alex had lost everything, and that he was a child born out of wedlock, they would never treat him differently. If the news spread that his leg would never heal, it wouldn't just be the Herrera family that turned their backs on him—there would be others as well.
Losing his heir position would mean much more than just the CEO role—he might even lose his life.
So was Alex intentionally trying to send a message, hoping Samantha's influence would help him secure the heir position?
Maddox would certainly not stand idly by, either. As I was the daughter of the Parks family, and Alex was my husband, Maddox would do everything in his power to keep Alex as the family's ally. He couldn't let anyone else take advantage.
Austin was right—if I divorced Austin, Maddox would lose his support from Alex.
While Maddox still held another trump card, he knew well that Austin could never be a match for Leah. Though Leah was a woman, she enjoyed the full favor of the Herrera family's elders, and the heir position could very well fall to her.
A soft sigh escaped my lips as my fingers clenched into a fist, causing sharp pain that brought tears to my eyes.
I let out a helpless laugh and said, "Divorce or not, it's not just up to me. Besides, right now, it's your brother-in-law who's the one asking for a divorce."
As I spoke, I squeezed out two tears, gently wiped them away, and then lowered my head in silence.
"Alex has always treated you well. If you just go and soften your stance, explain your relationship with Marvin, I believe he will forgive you," Austin said hurriedly, his face full of anxiety. His words made me even more confused.
Since when did Austin care so much about my relationship with Alex? Surely, he must have received some information. Otherwise, he wouldn't be so eager for me to speak to Alex.
I shook my head, my voice tinged with sadness as I said, "He's already moved to Chapney Mansion, and I heard from Leah that Samantha has moved there as well. If I go, it'll just be humiliating."
Before I could finish, Austin froze, his expression suddenly changing as if he had thought of something. He murmured, "Does Samantha still want to marry Alex?"
I paused, silently nodding before speaking slowly, "If Alex wants a divorce, I'll have no choice but to agree. After all, he and Samantha are meant to be together."
"No, you can't just let go that easily!" Austin's expression grew agitated, his tone rising without him realizing.
"You've always wanted me to leave the Herrera family, haven't you?" I gave a self-deprecating smile. "Now that it seems like you're finally getting your wish, why does it suddenly feel wrong? Don't worry, even if Alex and I divorce, it won't change your marriage plans with Kailyn."
"Kailyn never wanted to marry me," Austin chuckled lightly. "If you and Alex divorce, she'll never want to be with me."
I froze, not expecting Austin to speak so openly about such a matter. It was something everyone knew, but no one would dare put on the table.
out it openly.
Hearing his concerns, I gave a soft smile and said, "Don't worry, the Parks family is prominent. They won't let Kailyn marry Alex, especially since Alex doesn't love her. If he truly wanted to marry her, he wouldn't have rushed into a marriage with me."
"But he can't marry Samantha..." Austin trailed off.
"Why not?" I frowned. "The Herrera and Harvey families have a marriage agreement, don't they? Perhaps Alex has figured out what he really wants, so he's regretting it now. Besides, the Herrera family has always hoped he'd marry Samantha, so why don't you want that anymore? Aren't you willing?"
"Laurel, do you really think marrying Samantha will secure Alex the heir position?" Austin's gaze turned heavy as he looked at me, a deep sigh escaping him. His usually sharp presence seemed to soften, replaced by a look of concern and pity.
I met Austin's eyes, blinking and biting my lower lip before letting out a mocking laugh. "Don't you know that Alex's leg will never heal? How can he fight for the heir position?"
As the words left my mouth, a look of surprise crossed Austin's face. It was clear that he hadn't known about Alex's leg injury. His performance was so convincing that I almost believed him, but if Mandy hadn't told me, I would have been completely fooled by his acting skills.
I said, "The reason we argued is because I gave Marvin the medicine that could cure Alex's leg."
He asked, "Why?"
I lifted my gaze, casting a faint glance at him before speaking in a neutral tone, "Because, in my heart, Marvin matters more than Alex."
Austin stared at me in disbelief, his expression turning cold as he responded with indifference, "You don't care about him. Why did you marry him in the first place?"
