There was a long silence on the other end. I almost thought he had hung up. Just as I was about to disconnect the call, I suddenly heard Alex's indifferent voice come through. "I'm not even afraid of death. Why would I be afraid of losing everything?"
Hearing his response, I lowered my eyes, an inexplicable sadness and helplessness welling up inside me.
Someone who was truly happy in life could never be unafraid of death.
Only those who were alive yet unable to experience happiness would find death meaningless.
I wondered if Alex really had no one in this world worth holding on to. Even if his father had treated him badly, he still had his biological mother. Did she not give him even a sliver of warmth?
Half-joking, half-serious, I said, "I don't want to be a widow. Besides, you're not completely alone. You still have me."
Perhaps Alex didn't believe that I truly cared about him.
After all, I had given Marvin the chance to survive instead of him. I knew that if he could never walk again, he might never be able to face it.
But at that critical moment, I couldn't bring myself to let Marvin die instead.
"Laurel, how much of what you say is the truth, and how much is just lies?" Alex asked mockingly.
I smiled. "Why don't you guess?"
The moment I finished speaking, he hung up without hesitation.
I let out a long sigh and glanced at the invitation sitting on my desk, letting out a soft scoff.
A formal invitation to the Parks family's banquet. They could have just called me, yet they deliberately had someone deliver an invitation.
They were making it clear that even though Maddox had acknowledged me as his daughter, Melody, Kailyn, and even Isaac had never truly accepted me as family.
Not only did they refuse to see me as one of them, but they also treated me as a thorn in their side.
I picked up the invitation, deep in thought for a while, before finally making up my mind. After work, I would personally deliver it to Alex.
That way, I could see for myself whether Samantha had really moved into Chapney Mansion.
A young lady who wasn't even married. What reason did she have to stay at another man's home?
I waited impatiently for the end of the workday. As soon as it was time, I clocked out on the dot.
Once I got into the car, I told Liam to drive me to Chapney Mansion.
Liam hesitated for a moment before telling me that no outside vehicles were allowed in without prior approval. Only residents themselves had the privilege of entering the estate.
I couldn't help but sigh. The rich would always be the rich, keeping up their elegance and composure no matter the situation.
Even though Liam was reluctant to take me, he had no choice but to drive me to the villa district outside Chapney Mansion under my insistence.
Sure enough, as Liam had said, only the elite had access to this place.
Just as I was about to ask Alex to open the gate for me, I saw the security guard at the entrance approaching with a respectful demeanor.
"I'm Alex's wife. May I go in?" I asked.
"Of course," the guard responded immediately.
Just as he was about to let me through, a woman in a fur coat stepped out of a newly parked Porsche Panamera. She gave me a once-over, a look of disdain flashing across her face.
It seemed she had taken one glance at my modest outfit and decided that someone like me had no place here.
After scrutinizing me for two seconds, she shifted her gaze to my eyes. She had a meaningful smile before speaking in a slow, deliberate tone. "This is Chapney Mansion. Not just anyone can enter."
After saying that, she cast a glance at the Mercedes-Maybach parked by the curb, her eyes filled with nothing but contempt.
"Is that car yours?" I shook my head.
The woman nodded slightly, her expression indifferent. "I thought so. How could a young girl like you afford a car worth a million dollars?"
After saying that, she let out a mocking laugh.
I frowned slightly. That Maybach was worth far more than just a million dollars.
It seemed that Alex was too low-key, to the point where even the car he bought couldn't catch the eyes of these wealthy people.
At that moment, the security guard at the entrance looked troubled and cautiously said, "Miss, you said you're looking for Mr. Herrera. How about giving him a call?"
I was stunned for a moment. I hadn't expected that I would need to make a call just to see him. But I hadn't told Alex in advance that I was coming.
If I called now and he didn't want to see me, or worse, didn't even feel like talking to me, what would I do then?
As I hesitated, the woman who had driven here blocked the entrance and sneered at me. "Don't think that just because you're pretty, you can seduce Mr. Herrera. Women like you will never win his favor."
I was taken aback by her words. From her tone, it seemed that she knew Alex.
I couldn't help but ask, "Do you know Alex?"
The woman glanced at me with disdain. "How dare you call Mr. Herrera by his name?"
"Why shouldn't I?" I frowned slightly and spoke slowly. "He's my husband. Isn't it perfectly normal for me to call him by his name?"
"You're Mr. Herrera's wife? How is that possible?" The woman gave me a cold, skeptical look.
I didn't waste my breath arguing with her. After thinking for a moment, I took out my phone and made a call. This time, the call was answered in less than three seconds.
Just as I was about to complain about how the security guard had refused to let me in, I was surprised to hear a woman's voice on the other end. "Hello, may I ask who this is?"
I froze for a moment, feeling a sudden pang of bitterness. Did Alex not even have my number saved? Was that why Samantha answered the phone without knowing who I was?
"I'm looking for Alex," I said, forcing myself to suppress the anger rising within me.
Samantha didn't immediately hand the phone over. Instead, she calmly replied, "Alex is in the shower right now. Can you call back after he's done?"
I let out a cold laugh. Samantha must have recognized my voice. She was obviously doing this on purpose. She didn't want me to see him.
Samantha said, "Miss Harvey, what if I say no?" She seemed caught off guard by my direct refusal.
Then, without another word, she hung up the phone.
I couldn't help but find the situation amusing. Samantha, a so-called refined lady from a prestigious family, had brazenly moved into Alex's house. Her intentions were as clear as day.
But now that she was living in his home so openly, wasn't she being far too bold? She didn't even bother to acknowledge me, his legal wife.
She said, "Miss Parks, why rush things? Why insist on provoking Alex when he's already angry?"
