Samantha seemed to realize that abruptly hanging up on me wasn't the best decision, so she called back. This time, her tone carried a hint of amusement.
Perhaps, in her mind, Alex had completely lost faith in me, which was why he had moved to Chapney Mansion.
I let out a cold chuckle and said, "This is a matter between my husband and me. It doesn't seem to have much to do with you. Also, answering someone else's call without permission is rather impolite, Miss Harvey. Don't you know that?"
There was a second of silence on the other end of the call before I heard a sneering laugh. Then, Samantha's voice, warm yet laced with mockery, rang out. "Husband? Miss Parks, have you ever truly treated Alex as your husband?
"If you had, why would you still be thinking about another man? Alex went against his entire family just to marry you, but what about you?"
I couldn't be bothered to argue with her. Instead, I informed her that I was at the gates of Chapney Mansion and asked her to send someone to receive me.
Then, without hesitation, I ended the call.
Not long after, I saw Samantha herself appear. The security guard at the entrance, upon seeing the eldest daughter of the Harvey family personally come out, immediately put on a fawning smile and hurried forward.
"Miss Harvey, is this lady your friend?" he asked eagerly.
Samantha looked at me blankly, her black-and-white pupils revealing a cold glint. She said slowly, "Miss Parks, Alex doesn't want to see you. You should just go back, rather than upsetting him any further."
Hearing this, I couldn't help but laugh softly. It was clear that Samantha disliked me, perhaps she had never liked me from the start.
From the initial disdain to her current resentment, her emotions were written plainly in her eyes.
In her mind, if it weren't for my existence, she would have been able to marry into the Herrera family and become Alex's wife.
However, if she truly understood Alex, she should know that even without me, he would never have agreed to the marriage arranged by the Herrera family.
Because Samantha was the daughter-in-law chosen by the Herrera elders, not by him.
I wasn't sure what had happened between Raphael and Alex's birth mother, but after all this time, no one in the Herrera family had ever mentioned her.
Even those around Alex seemed to know nothing about this secret.
Even when he had been on the brink of life and death, his mother had never shown up, not even a phone call. It was evident that their relationship was not close at all.
Perhaps, in Alex's world, everyone appeared to love him deeply, yet they all had their ulterior motives.
And it seemed that he had never truly loved anyone. My presence in his life was nothing more than a means to solve a problem in a moment of desperation.
Yet, despite being just a tool, Alex was still willing to risk everything to save me. He always indulged my requests, never refusing me.
Everyone believed that the youngest son of the Herrera family was deeply cherished by his parents. But in truth, Raphael never truly loved this son, and Lena, who had raised him under her name, didn't care for him much either.
Despite never having received a shred of genuine affection, whenever he met strangers, he would always wear a warm smile. Even the way he looked at others carried a certain kindness, like an elder showing care.
A memory surfaced in my mind. It was the first time I met Alex. My heart ached inexplicably.
Taking a deep breath, I calmly took an invitation from my bag and handed it to Samantha.
I said, "Miss Harvey, please pass this invitation to Alex. If he doesn't wish to attend, let him call me personally."
Samantha's hand froze slightly as she accepted the invitation. She asked, "Laurel, the reason you married Alex in the first place was to use his power to return to the Parks family. Now that you've achieved your goal, are you still unwilling to let go?"
Hearing her question, I smiled, glanced at her, and hesitated before asking, "So, do you want to marry Alex?"
Her face instantly flushed red, but her eyes remained unwavering as she glared at me. She scoffed coldly. "Laurel, you stole my fiancé. Now, I'm taking him back. Is that not allowed?"
I was silent for a while before nodding and mocking, "If something can be easily taken away, it never belonged to you in the first place." Samantha suddenly raised her voice. "Is that so? In that case, Miss Parks, you shouldn't come back here again."
For a moment, I was taken aback. Did she not understand what I meant, or was she pretending not to?
I stared at her and said, "Miss Harvey... it seems you really do care about Alex. I suppose if he were to never stand again if he lost everything, you would still stay by his side?"
"What are you saying?" Samantha's eyes burned with anger as she glared at me in confusion.
I sighed lightly. "I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have given his treatment to someone else. But I had no other choice. Only by doing that could I keep him by my side."
Samantha's expression twisted into one of utter shock. She opened her mouth as if to speak. But before she could, I turned and got into my car, not lingering a second longer.
After an exhausting day, I felt drained.
When I returned to Honeydew Estate, I found Sophina sitting on the couch, discreetly wiping away her tears.
"Laurel," she said, her voice trembling. "Zachary was taken away by the Parks family."
I reached out and gently patted Sophina's shoulder. I had already been informed by Drew when the Parks family took Zachary away.
I replied, "He is a Parks family child. We should be happy for him."
"But will Zachary be in danger?" Sophina gripped my arm tightly, her reddened eyes staring at me with worry.
I shook my head and reassured her in a gentle voice, "Don't worry. With Susan and Drew around, Zachary will be safe."
Right now, Melody likely had no time to deal with Zachary. After all, Philbert's health was reportedly deteriorating.
Sophia muttered, "Laurel..."
I said, "Don't be sad. You've worked hard lately. Take a couple of days to rest."
Sophina looked up at me anxiously. "Laurel, are you... are you letting me go?"
I smiled. "Of course not. I'm just asking you to rest for a few days. It's the weekend anyway. You can spend some time with your sister."
She clutched her chest in relief, murmuring, "Laurel, I... I really thought you were firing me."
She hesitated for a moment before cautiously asking, "Laurel, are you and the young master really getting divorced?"
"We won't. As long as he doesn't divorce me, I will take care of him for the rest of my life." I just took it as my atonement.
