I paused for a moment. Then, I smiled faintly as I leisurely asked, "You've gone to such great lengths to drive me away from Alex, even going so far as to conspire with Bailee to kill my unborn child."
I added, "Do you really think that without my child, the Herrera family would kick me out? That you would be able to marry Alex?"
A flicker of shock crossed Kailyn's face, but she immediately denied having anything to do with my child's death.
She even had the audacity to accuse me of slandering her. I let out a cold laugh. Deep down, I knew she had wanted me dead. I was just lucky, someone had saved me.
"There's no one else here. Do you really not dare to admit what you've done?" I glanced at Kailyn and smiled mockingly.
She quickly denied it again, demanding that I provide evidence, saying that without proof, my accusations were nothing more than baseless slander.
Kailyn wasn't stupid. If she admitted to colluding with Bailee to kill my child, the Herrera family would never let her off the hook. Even if they didn't like me as their daughter-in-law, they would never tolerate such a thing.
I remained composed, sitting down calmly as I let out another cold laugh. "I know you won't admit it. I'm just reminding you out of kindness. Right now, you're Austin's fiancée."
I added, "Even if I leave Alex, it's not just a matter of whether the Herrera family would accept you. Do you really think your parents would allow it?"
Kailyn furrowed her brows, her dark eyes fixed on me, filled with murderous intent. But I was only stating the truth.
She was Austin's fiancée. Even if they broke off their engagement, Maddox would never allow her to marry Alex.
"You were born into the Parks family." I scoffed, my voice turning cold, a smile lingering in my eyes.
I added, "You could marry anyone else without an issue, but marrying Alex? That's nothing but a delusion. After all, he wouldn't even marry Samantha. What makes you think he'd choose you?"
"Then why would he choose you?" Kailyn practically shouted, her voice sharp with rage. "Who do you think you are?"
In her mind, even though Maddox had acknowledged me as his daughter, my status in the Parks family was probably lower than that of their servants.
How could I possibly win Alex's love? How could I have the qualifications to marry into the Herrera family?
"You should ask Alex that yourself." I withdrew my gaze from Kailyn, unwilling to waste another second looking at her face, twisted with jealousy.
"Laurel, if I can't have something, why should you?" Kailyn's cold fury was like an icy blade, cutting straight toward me. I simply smiled.
She knew full well that even if she got rid of me, she wouldn't necessarily get what she wanted. Yet she still wanted to destroy everything I had.
People like her weren't just cruel. They were venomous. She already had so much, yet she didn't cherish any of it.
Instead, she coveted things that were never meant to be hers. And if she couldn't have them, she'd rather destroy them. Like mother, like daughter.
After all, Melody and Maddox had grown up together as childhood sweethearts.
Melody's father and Maddox's father were close friends. In fact, it was Melody's family who arranged the marriage for Maddox's father, bringing his mother into the Parks family when they were not yet particularly powerful.
Over the years, the two families maintained close ties, and eventually, they arranged a marriage between their children.
However, no one expected the Parks family's business to flourish, surpassing even the Shepherd family, which was once several times larger.
In just over a decade, the Parks family's assets had far surpassed those of the Shepherd family.
Despite this, the Parks family never broke the old engagement. But what truly shocked everyone was that three years after Maddox left Wadiff City, he returned with a pregnant woman.
This infuriated Rebecca.
Although the Parks family was not particularly strict with traditions, no younger member had ever brought home a pregnant woman like that.
When it was revealed that the two had already registered their marriage, Rebecca was even more enraged and forced Maddox to apologize in front of his father's grave.
Yet, no one expected that the woman who followed Maddox back to the Parks family would quietly leave three years later, without a trace.
"Kailyn, if you dare to provoke me again, don't blame me for being ruthless." I slowly stood up and leaned toward her ear, my voice dripping with mockery.
I continued, "You should be grateful that you managed to marry Austin. After all, no family would want a woman who can't have children."
As soon as the words left my lips, a look of horror flashed across Kailyn's face.
"Laurel, stop spouting nonsense! If you dare say another word, I swear I'll make you and everyone around you suffer! Try me if you don't believe it!" Kailyn grabbed my arm, her expression frantic, her eyes filled with uncontrollable panic.
I let out a cold laugh and shook off her grip. "Are you threatening me, Kailyn? Maybe I should tell you an even bigger secret."
Her eyes widened in confusion, staring at me warily.
I smirked and lowered my voice. "I don't feel like revealing it now. But I can tell you one thing. The secret I know could leave you with absolutely nothing."
"Stop trying to scare me." Kailyn gritted her teeth and glared at me, but her unease was obvious.
Seeing her panic-stricken face, I suddenly found it amusing. I wondered what exactly had she done to make her so afraid.
The Parks family banquet lasted until late at night. Alex didn't leave with me, but before he left, he called me over, telling me to behave and not cause trouble.
I glanced at the additional two bodyguards standing beside Liam Alcott and couldn't help but feel annoyed.
I knew he was worried about my safety, but to outsiders, it looked more like I was under 24-hour surveillance.
Sure enough, the next morning, I heard footsteps outside my room while I was still half-asleep.
Maliyah pushed the door open, strode inside, and yanked me out of bed, her face filled with concern. "Laurel, did you and Alex have a fight? Is it because of Marvin? Haven't you explained things to him?"
She paused for a moment, then continued, "Laurel, it's not good for you and him to live apart all the time. Maybe you should let him move back in? Otherwise, someone else might take the opportunity to swoop in."
Looking at her anxious expression, I lazily raised my hand and yawned. "If he can be taken away that easily, then he was never mine to begin with."
"Laurel, human nature can't withstand temptation," she said, then hesitated before asking, "Is it true that his legs are permanently damaged?"
I remained silent for a moment before nodding. I still couldn't understand why Alex had exposed the fact that his legs were beyond recovery so early.
What was worse was that he had done it through me. By now, I must have become the most despised person in everyone's eyes.
After all, people would only save who they truly love. And in the end, I chose Marvin.
