"Laurel, why did you give the medicine to someone else?" Maliyah looked at me with a hint of agitation.
Hearing her words, I abruptly opened my half-closed eyes and looked at her in disbelief.
"Someone else? Marvin is not someone else." I furrowed my brows slightly and said in a low voice.
Maliyah had always been a slow-tempered person, never paying much attention to those around her.
It seemed like she had always lived in her little world, where, apart from family, the only people she knew were a few classmates she got along with.
But I never expected that, in her world, she would see Marvin as an outsider. After all, he had grown up with us.
Although he didn't visit our home frequently, he still showed up from time to time.
However, after I left Nifelheim City with Austin, his relationship with them seemed to have grown distant. But true feelings don't fade with time.
Just like the loved ones who have passed away. They may be gone, but they are never forgotten.
Maliyah seemed to realize that her words were inappropriate and said in a softer voice, "Laurel, I know you and Marvin are close, but he is not our family. Your husband is someone you're supposed to spend a lifetime with."
I let out a cold chuckle. "Who said I'll be spending a lifetime with him?"
"Laurel, are you planning to divorce him?" Maliyah's eyes widened in shock, suddenly turning red. "But he... he can't even stand anymore. And he once saved your life... Laurel, he truly..."
I interrupted her. "I know. Don't worry, I never planned on divorcing him."
Maliyah asked, "Really?"
I nodded.
Seeing my firm response, Maliyah let out a long sigh of relief.
"Then why did you choose to save Marvin instead of your husband?" she asked in a serious tone.
I sighed lightly. "It was an emergency. Marvin was unconscious the entire time."
Maliyah furrowed her brows, falling silent for a while before slowly asking, "Laurel, deep down, do you care about Marvin more than your husband? Is that why you didn't hesitate to save him?"
I shook my head. "Marvin couldn't be allowed to fall into a vegetative state. He needed immediate treatment to wake up."
Maliyah asked, "And what about your husband's legs?"
Hearing her question, I was momentarily at a loss for words. It was true. I didn't want to see Marvin remain unconscious indefinitely.
Becoming a vegetable was no different from dying. I couldn't just stand by and watch him lie there.
More importantly, he was harmed because of me, because of Kailyn's scheme.
I would never let her get away with it.
Maliyah asked again, "Laurel, do you think that your husband's injuries weren't as critical as Marvin's, so you chose to save Marvin first?"
I nodded. Indeed, Marvin needed treatment more urgently, which was why I made that choice.
If it had been a life-or-death situation and Alex had also needed immediate treatment, I would have saved him too.
Maliyah frowned. "Laurel, have you ever considered that maybe, without your medicine, Marvin might have woken up the next day or a week later? Once he regained consciousness, you could have used the medicine to treat your husband's legs."
She added, "Even if Marvin hadn't woken up yet, you could have found another solution. But instead, you placed all your hopes on Marvin. Wasn't that too cruel to your husband?"
I was stunned for a moment before I finally came to my senses.
For a brief moment, Maliyah's words made me waver in my decision. But in less than a minute, I found my answer.
"Alex isn't angry." I smiled.
"He wasn't? Then why did he move out?" Maliyah stared into my eyes, full of doubt.
At that moment, I was just as confused.
Looking at Maliyah, who was holding onto my arm, I suddenly felt that she was unfamiliar.
To her, Marvin, someone we had known for so many years, was merely an outsider.
She understood my guilt over not being able to save both of them, yet she still rationally asked whether I loved Alex or not. For a second, even I began to doubt my own feelings.
I replied, "Maybe he was upset because I didn't discuss it with him in advance."
"How is that possible? That medicine could have healed his legs! You gave it to someone else, and he didn't mind?" Maliyah's disbelief was evident in her gaze.
Indeed, most people were selfish and clinging to what they had.
But Alex wasn't like most people. He risked his own life to save me. He had saved children he didn't even know.
Likewise, he would have saved Marvin if he were the one making the decision. "The reason he's upset is probably not because I saved Marvin instead of him."
Maliyah froze. "How could he not care about his legs? That could affect who inherits the family position."
I replied, "Maybe he never planned on fighting for that position in the first place."
The moment I finished, Maliyah frowned in confusion.
"Don't worry," I reassured her, holding her hand and giving it a gentle pat. "No matter what happens, I will stay by his side. If he has to spend his life in a wheelchair, then I'll take care of him."
Maliyah stared at me blankly, seemingly at a loss for words.
After I freshened up and left my room, she was already gone.
The house was quiet. Without the usual bickering of Sophina and Zachary, it felt oddly empty.
After breakfast, I lay on the rocking chair on the balcony, basking in the rare sunlight of my day off.
Just before lunchtime, the doorbell rang. I assumed it was Maliyah and Javier from next door, but to my surprise, it was Melody standing outside.
Her cold, piercing gaze fixed on me. She wasn't going to pretend to be a gentle and elegant woman anymore. She arrived sooner than I expected.
It seemed Kailyn had been truly frightened, so much so that she ran to Melody and told her everything I had said to scare her.
Otherwise, Melody wouldn't be standing here now.
"Do you have time?" she asked.
Expressionless, I nodded, only now noticing the overwhelming anger radiating from her. But her fury and murderous intent meant nothing to me.
I signaled Dorothy to step outside. Dorothy hesitated, sensing the hostility from my visitor, unwilling to leave out of concern for my safety.
It wasn't until I told her who Melody was that she finally turned and left.
After all, Melody was a well-known figure, someone who would never do something reckless or self-destructive.
"What exactly do you want to know?" Melody's voice was sharp and chilling.
I smiled, showing not a trace of fear, and met her deep gaze. Then I said, "The truth from all those years ago."
