I stared intently at Melody, my gaze filled with urgency and curiosity. She wore a complex expression. Then, she had an unreadable smile.
"You want to know the truth from all those years ago?" Her voice was soft, yet carried a hint of coldness.
I locked eyes with her, doubts swirling in my mind, but I still nodded firmly. Everything that happened in the past had lingered in my heart, making it impossible for me to move on.
Despite my deep wariness toward Melody and I could never fully trust her, the desire for the truth drove me to uncover it.
After all, rumors were often baseless. They could not be relied upon.
Melody let out a quiet sigh, a fleeting emotion flashing through her gaze.
"When Maddox left Wadiff City, he was already engaged," she said, her voice tinged with sadness. "And we were deeply in love. So much so that I believed we would spend the rest of our lives together.
"I thought that when he returned after completing his studies, we would step into marriage and grow old side by side."
She paused, and for a moment, pain and anger flickered in her eyes. "But I never expected him to return to the Parks family with another woman."
My brows furrowed slightly, a complicated feeling rising within me.
Her words were like a stone cast into the calm waters of my heart, stirring up waves of turmoil.
"Laurel, have you always thought that I was the one who destroyed your mother's marriage?" Melody suddenly lifted her head and glared at me, her face filled with sorrow and bitterness. "The truth is, she was the real intruder."
Her voice grew sharper, trembling slightly. "But in the end, she was the one who suffered more. She gave her heart to the wrong person."
I watched her agitation, but I wasn't entirely convinced.
My mother, Yvette, had always been a strong and independent woman in my memories.
She never seemed like the kind of person who would recklessly chase after love. Perhaps she had made a mistake back then, marrying a man her parents disapproved of.
But I knew she must have had her reasons. She was not someone who would lose herself in blind love.
"She was too young to understand that marriage is built not just on deep affection but on how long novelty lasts. In the end, everything comes down to shared interests. Only relationships between equals can endure," I murmured, my gaze distant.
Melody was momentarily taken aback by my words. A flicker of surprise crossed her face as if she hadn't expected me to say something like that.
"You see things clearly." She sneered.
I ignored her sarcasm and fixed my gaze on her. "Did they get divorced?"
I had my suspicions. I was merely testing her to see if she would tell me the truth.
Melody fell silent. Her eyes wavered slightly, and her fingers tapped lightly against her knee.
After a long pause, she didn't answer my question directly. Instead, she took a deep breath and said slowly, "Let me first tell you about the tangled past between your mother and Maddox."
I nodded slightly, signaling for her to continue.
"Maddox had been studying abroad for less than three years when he returned with a woman who was already more than a month pregnant. That woman was your mother." Melody's voice became somewhat low.
She added, "When Rebecca saw her, she was furious and berated Maddox, saying that the Parks family wouldn't accept a woman of unknown origins.
"But before Rebecca's anger could subside, Maddox announced that he was calling off his engagement to the Shepherd family. Before he could finish, Ingram was so enraged that he fainted on the spot."
I listened in silence, the doubts in my heart growing.
Why was Maddox so determined to marry my mother? Was it merely because she was carrying his child?
Melody continued, "When Ingram finally woke up, he demanded to know what had happened. I stood silently by my father's side, waiting until he was well enough to get out of bed.
"Before he could even ask, Maddox told everyone that he had already married Yvette and that she was pregnant. Though the Parks family had to accept this, they held deep resentment toward Yvette."
She added, "They questioned how could a girl from a small, ordinary family possibly be worthy of the esteemed Parks family's heir?"
I bit my lip tightly, anger welling up inside me.
My mother must have suffered greatly in the Parks family. Alone, in such a foreign and hostile environment, she must have felt so helpless and struggled immensely.
Melody said coldly, "As for her status in the Parks household, you can imagine it. She was constantly ostracized, met with cold stares and ridicule."
Even the strongest love could not withstand the erosion of time and the scorn of those closest to them.
After giving birth, Yvette devoted most of her time to her child. Her relationship with Maddox gradually cooled.
Later, when Maddox took over the family business, he spent less and less time with her.
"Why did my mother leave the Parks family?" I asked.
"You think I forced her out, right?" Melody sneered. "She was too naive, believing that giving birth to his child would earn her the Parks family's acceptance. But they had never intended to acknowledge her. To the outside world, I was still Maddox's fiancée."
I didn't want to believe everything Melody was saying. In my mind, my mother had always been a proud woman. How could she have humbled herself to such an extent for love?
"Later, I became pregnant and returned to the Parks family with Maddox. Perhaps your mother was too disappointed in him. That's why she chose to leave." Melody sighed.
She said, "My presence became the last straw that broke the camel's back. So, your mother made the decisive choice to leave the Parks family, even abandoning her own son."
"Did they ever actually get divorced?" I asked abruptly, my gaze locking onto Melody's.
A flicker of panic crossed Melody's eyes. She avoided my gaze, fell silent for a moment, then said, "I've already told you everything I know."
She stared at me coldly, her eyes filled with a resolute finality, as if unwilling to revisit the past.
Seeing the way she avoided my eyes, I knew. It was clear that there were doubts surrounding my parents' divorce.
If the divorce was never finalized, then what else had been a lie?
But now that my mother was gone, proving that she never actually signed the divorce papers would be nearly impossible. And as for finding Maddox himself, that wouldn't be an easy task either.
