Cassidy extended her long, elegant fingers, picked up the cup in her hand, and clicked her tongue lightly. "Well done! You've become his aunt-in-law of that heartless guy."
I looked at Cassidy. Her familiar voice, brows, and eyes suddenly made me feel like high school had just passed not long ago.
But time had changed her appearance, and the sharp edges of her personality had been smoothed away.
Looking at the proud expression on Cassidy's face, I let out a soft sigh and asked, "When did you come back?"
She replied, "I've been back for a while."
I was slightly stunned.
Cassidy had gotten into the same university as her beloved, Shawn Brewer, after graduating from high school. Later, the two of them went abroad together after finishing their studies.
It was said that they didn't stay abroad for long before getting married.
Actually, Cassidy had liked Austin since their first year of high school, but she had never dared to confess.
When she finally mustered up the courage to do so, she found out that Austin had already liked someone else, and that person was me.
However, our friendship never changed because of Austin. Cassidy said she admitted defeat willingly.
After all, she had only befriended me in the first place because she thought I was beautiful.
Her reasoning was that when two beautiful girls became friends, they wouldn't feel jealous of each other.
Back then, I never really understood how good-looking I was. Every day, I walked around with dark circles under my eyes, looking exhausted and sluggish.
Only Cassidy knew that I had been working hard at multiple part-time jobs just to support my passion. A poor kid like me wasn't allowed to have dreams.
"I got divorced from Shawn." When Cassidy said this, there was no sadness or grief on her face, and her voice was as soft and gentle as ever.
Although I had already guessed it, hearing her say it out loud still left me a little surprised.
It all seemed too sudden. After all, back then, Shawn had been madly in love with Cassidy.
To pursue her, he had scrimped and saved just to buy her a new phone. For her, he had even changed his dreams.
Because, in Shawn's heart, Cassidy was more important than his own aspirations.
Yet in the end, despite being so in love, they still couldn't grow old together.
"Divorce is normal," Cassidy said, taking a small sip from her cup. Her beautiful eyes gazed at me, brimming with tears but also full of laughter.
She added, "Laurel, I never thought he would betray me. I never thought he would fall in love with another woman."
Cassidy had always been quiet, a trait that contrasted somewhat with her striking appearance.
On the other hand, Shawn was lively and playful. Their personalities complemented each other well. But people wouldn't stay the same forever.
Cassidy had moments of insecurity and fear, moments when she needed someone by her side.
Yet Shawn, with all his fun-loving ways, never seemed to notice what she truly needed.
Cassidy let out a mocking laugh. "He knows me well, so how could he not understand my emotions? To put it simply, we were together for too long and got tired of each other. But does he think he was the only one who got bored?"
She continued, "I was already sick of it long ago. Yet, I still held on to my principles because only when you truly love someone do you understand the importance of boundaries."
She added, "He didn't stop loving me. He just didn't love me as intensely as before. He even thought that as long as he hid it well enough, I would never find out about his betrayal."
I lifted my gaze to look at Cassidy, a wave of sorrow washing over me.
Men always think that as long as they cover their tracks well, their affairs will never be discovered. Even if their wives do find out, they still try to shift the blame onto them.
I comforted her, "The past is in the past. There's no point dwelling on it."
Hearing my response, Cassidy was momentarily stunned. With a trace of doubt in her eyes, she asked softly, "Laurel, do you mind that I'm a divorced woman?"
I frowned and said sternly, "What I mind is that you came back and didn't even bother to find me. Who was the one so eager to leave the country back then?"
If it weren't for Cassidy, how could Shawn have the opportunity to go abroad with his humble family background?
As expected, once someone reached the shore, they abandoned the person who helped them swim.
Love had an expiration date. It just varied from person to person. Some people loved for a lifetime, while for others, love faded with time.
"Laurel, why are you looking for Jalen?" Cassidy asked, her eyes filled with curiosity.
Just as I was about to answer, the waiter arrived with two plates of steak, interrupting our conversation.
It wasn't until the food was set on the table that I lowered my voice and asked, "Have you heard about that criminal case in Nifelheim City?"
Cassidy was visibly startled. She quickly nodded, her face filled with fear. "What does that case have to do with Jalen?"
I replied, "The victim, Wilhelm Joetze, knew Jalen."
"They knew each other?" Cassidy bit her lip, her expression freezing for a moment.
I asked urgently, "How do you know him? Do you know where he is now?"
"I met Mr. Griffith when I was organizing a charity donation event. He helped me with it," Cassidy replied, her face filled with confusion and anxiety. "But he doesn't seem like a bad person at all. I believe he's innocent."
"Cassidy, bad people don't walk around with 'bad guy' written on their faces," I said solemnly.
After thinking for a moment, I added, "Wilhelm's death isn't as simple as it seems. Everyone around him is a suspect. And Jalen knew both the victim and another person who recently died by suicide."
Cassidy's face turned paler. Her bright eyes locked onto mine, and her voice trembled with unease. "Are you talking about Liesel Gunther?"
"How do you know that?" I frowned, staring at her in disbelief.
So far, the police hadn't publicly disclosed any link between Wilhelm's murder and Liesel's suicide. Yet somehow, Cassidy knew.
She looked at me blankly, lowering her voice. "I read about it on a forum. The police were investigating Liesel because of Wilhelm, but then she suddenly committed suicide.
"On the surface, all the evidence suggests it was a natural death, but people on the forum think it's suspicious. They believe she was threatened into losing the will to live."
I asked Cassidy for the forum link. When I clicked on it and saw the account that had posted the thread, my grip on my phone tightened. It nearly slipped from my fingers.
The username of the person who posted the information was identical to Angela's old online alias, the Devil Fallen to Earth.
"Laurel, what's wrong?"
Hearing Cassidy's voice, I snapped back to reality, clutching my phone tightly before sending a message to the poster.
[Who are you? And why do you believe the person who killed Wilhelm is the same one who drove Liesel to suicide?]
