"I remembered that Brady's wife was a doctor." Watching Marvin closely, I searched his expression for a response. After a brief pause, I continued, "If the child had been sick, would a doctor as the mother have been so quick to call Brady home?"
Marvin's expression darkened. His eyes widened as he met my gaze head-on, his tone firm and unwavering. "That's his son. Isn't it only natural for Brady to want to go home and see his child?" His hands clenched into fists at his sides, seemingly out of instinct, as if my skepticism had thoroughly displeased him.
In his mind, Brady Martin's character was unquestioned—he firmly believed that Brady could never be a corrupt officer. Marvin fell silent momentarily, a flicker of contemplation crossing his eyes. Then, without hesitation, he dialed a number that didn't belong to anyone on the investigative team.
His fingers moved swiftly across the screen, his brows slightly furrowed, expression focused. Once the call connected, he spoke briefly before falling silent, waiting for the other party's response.
Ten minutes later, the phone rang suddenly. Marvin picked it up immediately, a hint of tension flashing in his eyes. He gave a slight nod as he listened, and gradually, his expression eased.
After ending the call, he looked at me, his voice hinting at exhaustion. "Brady's son was indeed taken to the hospital that day. Laurel, leave this case to the police—stay out of it."
A weary expression crossed his face, and he couldn't help but stifle a yawn. Without another word, he lay down on the bed, his eyes half-closed, as if he had no intention of discussing the matter further.
I hesitated momentarily, my gaze lingering on Marvin as conflicting thoughts swirled. In the end, I slightly nodded and said softly, "Alright, get some rest." With that, I slowly rose and turned toward the ward's door.
I let out a deep sigh as I closed the door. Marvin had deliberately adopted an expression of indignation, playing on my suspicions of Brady, but he didn't want me to continue investigating. He was worried I might end up in danger. He didn't know that, even without this case, my situation wasn't exactly safe.
After getting into the car, I sent a message to Alfie, detailing my concerns about the burglary in the villa district and the murder at Disrey Park. I explained everything in full. After a long while, the screen remained still, with no response.
As I was feeling slightly disappointed, Alfie's call suddenly came through. "Did you argue with Marvin?" he asked, his tone laced with mockery and curiosity, completely shedding his usual serious demeanor.
I frowned slightly, silently amused by Alfie's unexpected curiosity. "He doesn't want me to continue investigating the case," I said, suppressing my anger. I added with a hint of sarcasm, "He's probably afraid I'll steal his thunder."
Alfie chuckled, his voice tinged with teasing. "Do you know where the burglarized villa is?"
"Where is it?" I asked curiously.
"Chapney Mansion—the villa district where your husband lives," Alfie said casually. "Seriously, how could a thief possibly get into such a high-end neighborhood?"
His question made me freeze for a moment, instantly on alert. In a low, steady voice, I asked, "Who reported it, and what exactly was stolen?" My tone inadvertently sharpened, a feeling of unease creeping up on me.
Alfie hesitated on the other end of the line, clearing his throat before responding, "Why don't you ask your husband when you get home?"
I couldn't help but think Alex had been at the hospital the entire time the incident occurred, so how could he possibly know about the burglary at Chapney Mansion? The only logical conclusion was that the property stolen from him had to be the place where he was staying.
"Mr. Watts, I need you to look into something for me."
"What is it?" Alfie's tone shifted immediately, the playful note disappearing and being replaced by a low, serious note.
I lightly bit my lip, falling into silence for a moment before finally speaking up. "I need you to look into Brady for me."
"What's going on with him? Why are both of you asking me to look into him?" Alfie's voice held a note of confusion.
At Alfie's question, I paused momentarily, surprised that Marvin also seemed to want to look into Brady. It seemed he had taken my words to heart after all.
Even if Brady's son had indeed fallen ill, there was no way he would have suddenly left, especially considering that no matter what happened at home, Brady never once broke away from a mission.
"Alright, I'll let you know once I find something," Alfie said before abruptly hanging up the phone.
I stood there holding my phone, momentarily frozen. I had planned to tell Alfie about Jalen Griffith, but then I recalled what Cassidy Cruz had mentioned—that Jalen, working part-time at Nifelheim High School, might not be the same person.
I had Liam drive straight to Chapney Mansion. As soon as we arrived at the gate, the security guard let us in without hesitation, taking me by surprise.
It was my first time visiting the villa where Alex was staying. As the car pulled into the parking area in front of the villa, the gates swung open simultaneously. To my surprise, it wasn't the young lady from the Harvey family who stepped out but Hector.
When Hector saw me arrive, his face immediately broke into a broad smile, his eyes narrowing into slits. He hurriedly instructed the servants to bring me refreshments. His face radiated warmth, as if I were a long-lost family member he hadn't seen in years.
I walked into the living room, scanning the space, but I didn't see Alex anywhere. "Where's Alex?" I couldn't help but ask, my eyes betraying a hint of expectation.
Hector's face softened into a gentle smile as he replied gently, "Mr. Herrera went to the hospital for a check-up."
"Is he not feeling well?"
Hector shook his head and said, "I'm not entirely sure. Mr. Herrera just mentioned feeling unwell and thought it would be better to get a hospital check-up to be safe."
I sat down on the sofa, my mind racing with thoughts. It suddenly dawned on me that I might not be a competent wife. Even when playing the role, I hadn't truly fulfilled the duties expected of a wife.
After what felt like an eternity, Alex finally returned. His face was pale, and he looked fatigued.
When he saw me, a flicker of surprise crossed his face, but it quickly gave way to a calm expression. "What are you doing here?" His voice was slightly hoarse.
I fixed my gaze on his eyes and questioned, "There was a burglary at Chapney Mansion. Do you know about it?"
Alex paused momentarily, then nodded and replied, "I know. I was the one who called the police."
"What was stolen?" I pressed further.
Alex hesitated momentarily before answering, "A pen."
