"Laurel, will the Reynolds family come after us?" Javier looked up at me, and his eyes filled with fear and anxiety.
He was afraid Dominic would secretly retaliate against me.
"Don't worry. It's okay." I reached out and patted his shoulder reassuringly.
Generally speaking, those who are aggressive are often just bluffing, while the dangerous ones are those who are silent and scheming.
However, Dominic was a complete outlier. He had a bit of cunning and knew how to use various means to win people over using both kindness and threats.
It was a pity that he was short-sighted. He only cared about the immediate benefits before him but didn't understand the short-term gains were like a flash in the pan, disappearing in a moment.
If he wanted a place in the Reynolds family, he had to have a long-term vision instead of just focusing on those small profits.
None of the Reynolds family was kind. If Dominic entered the Reynolds family, he would be devoured, leaving nothing.
After signing the agreement, Dominic was the first to storm out of the police station.
Just then, a man dressed in black with a baseball cap walked toward Dominic and accidentally bumped into him.
"Are you blind?" Dominic roared in a rage like an angry lion, yelling at the man in black.
His hands were clenched into fists, and the muscles in his arms tensed as if he were ready to punch the man at any moment.
As Dominic said so, the man beside him slowly raised his head and glanced at Dominic.
His eyes were so cold that they could freeze a person to death, making one shudder.
The man suddenly reached out to grab Dominic's arm when they made eye contact. Then, he took a dagger from his arms and quickly pressed it against Dominic's neck.
"Hand over Arianna Beacon, or I will kill him!" The man roared.
The originally noisy entrance of the police station suddenly fell silent, as if time had stood still.
Everyone looked at each other in dismay, and their eyes filled with shock and fear.
Just now, they were dealing with a fight at the police station, and now there was another terrorist threat. The hostage in the other party's hand was the young master of the Reynolds family. It was one trouble after another.
Upon seeing that, a police officer took two steps forward, wanting to intervene.
However, he was sternly rebuked by the man in black before he could get close.
"Don't move! Nobody moves or I'll kill him!" The man's voice was sharp and piercing, his hand holding the dagger trembling slightly and his eyes revealing determination and madness.
"Sir, do you realize what you're doing?" I said softly, looking at the man before me calmly.
I tried to keep my tone gentle and calm, not wanting to provoke him.
He didn't look old, probably in his forties, tall and sturdy. He was obviously a man of great strength.
His eyes were bloodshot, and his gaze was fierce and desperate, making him look fierce and terrible.
His dagger-holding hand was covered in calluses, rough and thick. It was the hand of a man who had worked hard all his life.
Although he wasn't wearing designer clothes, he was clean and gave a neat impression.
The man frowned and glared at me fiercely, full of wariness and impatience. "None of your business!" he snapped.
I knew in my heart the man before me was far too agitated, like a powder keg that could explode at any moment. The consequences would be unimaginable if I weren't careful.
However, I couldn't bear to stand by and watch people die.
Apparently, there was a way to resolve the conflict, and I didn't want to see the man lose his life over a moment of impulsiveness.
And it wasn't Dominic I wanted to protect but the fearless man.
I took a deep breath and forced a smile. "How about you switch him out for me? I'll be your hostage."
The man was slightly taken aback, seemingly not expecting me to make such a request.
Hesitation flashed across his eyes, but his expression quickly returned to its former ferocity.
"You think I'd fall for that? Don't try any tricks!" he snarled, pressing the dagger closer to Dominic's throat. Dominic's face was ashen with fear, and his body was trembling uncontrollably as he whimpered pleas for mercy.
"Sir, I'm not trying any tricks. Are you afraid of a little girl like me?" I coughed lightly and continued. "I'm just a defenseless woman. I don't pose any threat to you, do I? And I promise if you let him go, I'll stay here as your hostage until you see Arianna."
A flicker of uncertainty crossed the man's eyes as he seemed to consider my proposal.
Just then, Liam glanced at me discreetly, his eyes full of worry and anxiety. He shook his head slightly, signaling me not to interfere.
I understood what he meant. The matter was dangerous, and I might get into a desperate situation myself if I were not careful.
However, I had made up my mind. I could not just stand by and watch things develop to a point of no return.
"Why are you doing this?" the man finally asked, a hint of confusion in his eyes.
"Because I don't want to see anyone get hurt and see you make an irreversible mistake in the heat of the moment," I said sincerely. "I trust you. You must have a reason for doing this. We can talk it over. Maybe we can solve the problem."
The man was silent momentarily. There was a hint of pain and helplessness in his eyes.
"You don't understand. I'm desperate. Arianna ruined my family. I must find her today and get an explanation from her!"
There was a sob in his voice, and his grip on the dagger loosened slightly.
"I don't know what happened, but I believe there must be a better solution." I stepped slowly forward and said softly. "Let him go. We'll sit down and talk. I'll help you find a way."
The man looked at me, his eyes full of conflict.
He seemed to be weighing the pros and cons, not knowing how to choose.
Then the surrounding police officers slowly approached, trying to find an opportunity to subdue him.
The man noticed the police officers' movements and became tense again.
"Stay back!" he shouted. "I'll kill him if you come any closer!"
I quickly raised my hand, signaling the police officers not to act rashly.
"Sir, don't get excited. They won't come over. Don't worry," I said as I walked up to the man without making a sound, and smiled. "Look, I've come to you. You can let him go and point the knife at me."
The man hesitated, but finally let go of Dominic.
Dominic scurried away as if pardoned. He took refuge behind the policeman. His face was as pale as a sheet, gasping for breath.
The man pointed the dagger at me, and his eyes were still full of vigilance.
"You'd better not try anything funny, or I won't let you off!" he said fiercely.
