The air in the police station lobby seemed to have solidified, oppressive, and suffocating.
The people around me held their breath. Their eyes fixed on me and the man with the dagger before me.
When the man agreed, I nodded hastily. My heart was beating wildly as if it was about to burst out of my chest at any moment.
However, I knew I couldn't show any fear, so I tried to stay calm on the surface and kept my face as calm as possible.
"Don't worry. I won't act rashly. Why don't we find a place to sit down and have a good talk?" My voice was as steady as possible, and each word was pronounced with care and slowly. I didn't want the man to sense my slightest panic.
The man pondered for a moment. He furrowed, and his eyes were full of vigilance and suspicion.
Finally, he said firmly, "I can agree to your request, but I want to see Arianna."
My heart tightened. I looked up at Alfie with a pleading gaze, hoping he could understand what I meant and give me some support and help behind my back.
Alfie was standing not far away. He nodded slightly, a trace of worry in his eyes.
In fact, I had the chance to knock the dagger out of the man's hand, which wouldn't be difficult for me with my usual training.
However, I had a hunch that letting the two meet might unearth more valuable clues.
"We need to find a place to sit down if you want to see Arianna." I looked at the middle-aged man calmly, trying to make me look sincere and believable. I forced a smile, attempting to ease the tense atmosphere.
The man gave me a strange look. "Can you arrange for me to see her?"
His voice was full of suspicion as if he was waiting for my lie to be exposed.
"Of course," I said without hesitation.
Because I believed Alfie wouldn't stand by and watch me die. He would surely find a way to help me solve this problem.
The middle-aged man stared at me with gloomy eyes, his gaze full of scrutiny.
Time seemed to stand still, every second stretching out endlessly.
Finally, he took a deep breath and said, "Okay. I want to see her now!"
I brought the man into the interrogation room at the police station.
The interrogation room was sparsely furnished, with cold, bare walls, an old table, and several chairs.
The harsh and glaring light shone on everyone's face, making the tense atmosphere even more pronounced.
I gestured for the man to sit and then sat opposite him.
"Sir, can you tell me about you and Arianna now?" I asked softly. My eyes were full of concern as I tried to open his heart with a gentle tone.
I leaned forward slightly, trying to appear more sincere.
The man sighed deeply, and his eyes were filled with endless sadness.
"I used to have a happy family. I had a virtuous, beautiful wife and a lovely daughter," he said slowly, his voice low and hoarse, every word seeming to be squeezed out of his throat.
"But we started to argue ever since my wife met Arianna. My wife made me lose my job and even ignored our sick daughter. Later, she just stopped coming home altogether. But she kept sending child support every month. I've been looking for her everywhere but can't find her."
I couldn't help but be taken aback by the man's answer. My heart was filled with doubt. I looked at him questioningly. "Your wife hasn't been home, shouldn't you have reported it to the police as her husband?"
The man shook his head with a wry smile. His face was etched with helplessness and self-mockery.
"Call the police? I always thought my wife had changed. I was holding her back, along with our child. Until I found out Arianna was a murderer."
"She is not a murderer. She only helped to dispose of the body," I explained.
Alfie agreed to the man's request for my safety.
More importantly, he didn't want the kidnapping case to become a big deal and affect the normal order of the police station.
We had a common purpose, to get Arianna out of here, away from her current predicament. Maybe we could ask for more secrets from her.
Arianna was brought in after a while.
She was dressed in simple clothes. Her hair was messy, and her face bore a hint of tension and uneasiness.
The middle-aged man immediately stood up from his chair as he saw Arianna. Furious flames burned in his eyes as if he wanted to set the entire room ablaze.
His hands gripped the table edge tightly. His knuckles were white, and the veins on his arms were bulging.
"Arianna, do you still recognize me?" he demanded loudly, his voice echoing through the room and making my eardrums ache.
A flicker of confusion crossed Arianna's eyes as she heard the middle-aged man's question, but she didn't answer.
"Where is my wife? Is she dead or alive?"
The middle-aged man's face contorted. He lunged toward Arianna, grabbing her shoulders and shaking her violently.
"You're lying! She must be with you! Where are you hiding her?"
His voice was almost a roar. The veins on his forehead bulged, and those in his neck were visible.
I quickly stood up and rushed between them, prying the middle-aged man's hands away.
"Sir, please calm down! This won't solve anything," I shouted with a hint of anxiety in my voice.
At the same time, I motioned with my eyes for Alfie to come and help.
Alfie strode over quickly and pulled the middle-aged man away. The middle-aged man struggled, shouting, "You liar! Give me back my wife!"
Arianna sneered and lowered her voice, "Wayne, it's because you're useless that your wife left you. Isn't it too late to come to me now and ask for your wife back?"
Upon hearing that, Wayne's eyes were instantly bloodshot, like an enraged bull.
His breathing became rapid and heavy. His chest heaved violently.
He took the knife and charged at Arianna as if he wanted Arianna dead.
However, he didn't expect me to stop him quickly.
I pushed him back with all my might, my body shielding Arianna.
"Wayne, don't be impulsive!" I shouted, my voice trembling slightly.
Just as I called for help, the people sent by Alfie managed to pin Wayne to the ground.
I thought the matter would subside and felt a sense of relief wash over me.
As they were about to detain Wayne, one of the police officers was pushed to the ground by him.
Everything happened so suddenly. His dagger slashed across my neck before anyone could react.
A sharp pain surged through me, and I could feel warm liquid gushing from my neck, staining my clothes crimson.
I clutched my neck, blood seeping through my fingers.
I could hear the gasps of the people around me, their panicked figures blurring before my eyes.
Javier's face was ashen, his eyes filling with fear and despair.
"Laurel, are...are you okay?" His voice cracked with unshed tears, on the verge of breaking down.
